we want to turn now to kris sanchez. she has been tracking three other wildfires, triggering evacuations and really carving a path of destruction there. so, kris, one of those fires, as laura was just saying early, it's already been deadly. right. so, sadly, we can confirm that two people died in the eaton fire, which is burning in the altadena pasadena area, along with the angeles national forest, which just exploded in size overnight because of those winds that jennifer bjorklund was talking about. the eaton fire, now at 10,600 acres. and the danger, as she said, is far from over and in fact, is getting worse by daylight. you can see not only the destruction of the eaton fire there in the pasadena area, but the fire that also continues to burn in the areas where there isn't really much left to burn. and there are also injuries among the residents there and also among the firefighters. now, overnight, a pasadena nursing home had to be evacuated. and you see health care workers pushing some of the patients away in wheelc

nbc bay area's kris sanchez is live for us from the newsroom with the latest there. chris.ood morning to you, marcus and laura. so the santa ana winds are still howling, especially in the area of the palisades fire. but firefighting planes and choppers are able to go back up. and i want to show you what a difference that makes in the firefight. this is the sunset fire that started just before 6:00 last night. swiftly, their firefighters were able to stop the fire's progress toward homes and contain the perimeter, limiting spot fires set by those spreading embers. this fire was rapidly and aggressively attacked by using coordinated air and ground fire suppression efforts. residents heeded our timely evacuation orders, so that's what happens when everything goes well. and that's the hope for that kind of break in the palisades fire, which is now at more than 17,000 acres, the la fire chief says structures destroyed or damaged are now in the hundreds of thousands, multiple thousands. despite extreme fire behavior and forecasted wind gusts of more than 60mph, the aircraft are g

so, kris, tell us more about this. well good morning to you, marcus and laura. at this point it is not clear why those san francisco police officers were pursuing that suspect, only that the pursuit did not end the way that it was supposed to. this was the scene around four this morning. and you can see that sfpd patrol car along with that white car, they crashed. the white car is the suspect vehicle. they also hit a residence. and there were people inside at the time. fortunately, no one inside was hurt. this was at the corner of san bruno avenue and paul avenue. what we know right now is that at least two officers and the suspect suffered minor injuries and were transported to the hospital. all three appear to be okay. police have not told us why they were pursuing that suspect at this point. but i looked up the department. policy and pursuits are only allowed if officers have reasonable suspicion or probable cause that a felony or misdemeanor has occurred, is occurring, or is about to occur. now we have a crew headed to the scene. we'll bring you more details

what a case, kris. you might remember it. a lot of people do. certainly, matthew mueller is already behind bars serving 40 years. and yet today, investigators in seaside and monterey county will detail how their investigation led to an alleged crime in san ramon. you might remember mueller from the 2015 kidnaping of denise huskins in vallejo, mullin, entered her boyfriend's home. zip tied them both, then kidnaped huskins for a $1,700 ransom when she escaped two days later and was found in huntington beach down in southern california. vallejo police accused the couple of making the whole thing up. huskins later sued vallejo police for defamation. so now mueller's mullin is connected to another kidnaping for ransom in san ramon. about a month after the huskins case in 2015. in all, mullin is now linked to five cases from a home invasion in mountain view in 2019. in october of that year, another home invasion in palo alto. in 2015. his behavior escalated into that kidnap for ransom of denise huskins in march. then the new alleged kidnaping in san r

meteorologist kari hall has been tracking that and kris. we've still seen some of these occasional wind gusts in the san gabriel mountains up to 60mph. and in malibu, we are still getting some breezes and gusts to 48mph. so even when we talk about the wind calming down, we're talking about it coming down from 100 from a couple of days ago. it's still going to be gusty and could spread some more fires. and around the altadena area this morning we're at about 35mph. the forecast still keeps those gusts pretty high into the afternoon. here we are at 1:00 and we're seeing about 20 mile per hour winds that will calm down to the single digits later on tonight, which would hopefully help with those fires getting more, the fire crews getting more containment. but unfortunately we are still expecting some high winds at times throughout the day tomorrow and possibly again later on this weekend. so it will still be breezy that dry northerly wind. and we are now seeing that this is the third most destructive fire on record, according to cal fire. and s

notorious bay area kidnaper is facing new accusations in yet another kidnaping today in the bay's kris sanchez joining us from the newsroom this morning with more on those mounting charges. chris. well, good morning to you, marcus and laura. matthew mueller is already behind bars serving 40 years for kidnaping. and yet today, investigators in seaside in monterey county will detail how their investigation led to another alleged crime in san ramon. that same year, you might remember mueller from the 2015 kidnaping of denise huskins in vallejo, mullin, entered her boyfriend's home, zip tied him, then kidnaped huskins for $1,700 ransom when she escaped two days later and was found 400 miles away in huntington beach. vallejo police accused the couple of making the whole thing up. huskins later sued vallejo police for defamation. now, mullens is connected to another kidnaping for ransom in san ramon. abobout a mon after that huskins case in 2015. in all, mullens is linked to five cases from a home invasion in mountain view in 2009. in october of that year, another home invasion in palo alto.

today in the bay's kris sanchez joining us with some big developments overnight from drone strike to growing number of victims there chris. well good morning to you, marcus and laura. so that red flag condition is going to continue today as more crews roll into the five fire zones in southern california. as you know, some of them are from here in the bay area. that latest fire you mentioned is kenneth fire, which is now burning in ventura county, and that's north of malibu. crews worked very fast there and tried to throw a lot of resources at it in order to get a handle on it. and while all other fires are still under investigation, fire officials say this 1st may be a case of arson. police are questioning a man who was detained by citizens in that neighborhood. now in the palisades fire, which is still the biggest fire we now know, two people died in the firestorm that just ripped through nearly 20,000 acres and as many as 10,000 structures. aerial crews were key in gaining about 6% containment, but at one point, a firefighting aircraft hit a drone and there is an investigation unde

today in the bay's kris sanchez in our newsroom this morning with more on this. so, chris, do we know what happened here? you know, it's not clear at this point why those san francisco police officers were pursuing that suspect, only that that pursuit did not end the way that it was supposed to. this was the scene around four this morning. you can see the san francisco police patrol car where it crashed into that building. you see that white car? that was the suspect vehicle. they also crashed into each other and hit that residence with people inside. at the time, this was at the corner of san bruno avenue and paul avenue. what we know right now is that at least two officers and the suspect suffered minor injuries. they were taken to the hospital by ambulance. they are going to be okay. police have not told us why they were pursuing that suspect. but i did look up the department policy for you. and pursuits are only allowed if officers have reasonable suspicion or probable cause, that a felony or violent misdemeanor has occurred, is occurring, or is about to occu
