kris sanchez is live in san jose where people are getting really creative to lend a helping hand. morning, kris. >> reporter: good morning, laura. this is al chemy hair salon and spa. they are trying to help raise 1.7 million pounds of food and $11 million. they are throwing in an extra treatment for the clients who deliver four cans of food. but they say even without the extra treatment, their clients are happy to help. that's what a lot of folks are finding around the bay area as they get creative with their food drives. we found san mateo high school is doing a canned food drive getting students to participate there. also there's a boot camp fitness class that invited folks to work out with a pumpkin, using the pumpkin as the weight and resistance and donated that to the second harvest food bank. of course there are big corporations doing online virtual food drives to help contribute to the need. now second harvest food bank is just one of the food banks that is doing food drives for this holiday season. the need is up 30%. same for the san francisco food bank and really for mo

kris sanchez is live in santa clara with a look at the ultimatum and why more than 80 city workers are at risk. kris? >> reporter: good morning to you, brent. city workers here in santa clara in a very difficult position. protect my paycheck or protect my co-worker's job. despite the fact that the city has done well to save money and cut costs up to this point and even increase some fees, the city is facing a $5 million shortfall this year as a $13 million shortfall next year. that's why at last night's city council meeting, the councilmembers asked the union workers to take a 5% pay cut or take five furlough days, which is working without pay and to forego the december pay raise they were promised in their last contract. the job cuts could happen in all departments from police and fire to the library. not only could the cuts affect the quality of life here in santa clara, it could also affect the reputation for civility in the south bay community. >> to talk about laying them off after you guys have squandered millions of dollars, it's too bad you all don't have the 49er name after wh

kris sanchez is live at our election desk with the latest on the state's balance of power. >> reporter: one of the big races that are too close to call, congressional district 11, which represents most of the east bay. take a look at the numbers there. david harmer has 48% of the vote, jerry mcnerney has 47% of the heat and that's essentially a dead heat. too close to call at this point. state attorney general, that race is also too close to call. san francisco district attorney kamala harris has been gaining on the gop candidate all night as those votes continue to come in. 89% of the vote in at this point. a 45 and 45%. cooley called the race just after 11:00 last night, but kamala harris's camp is holding out hope things could change. harris is leading here in the bay area and is also leading in los angeles county. if elected, harris will be the first african-american elected as california attorney general. >>> this morning senator barbara boxer is claiming victory with 52% of the vote and 80% of the votes counted. the republican challenger carly fiorina still insisting that this ra

"today in the bay's" kris sanchez joins us from our election center. she has a look at several measures that are still undecided, a few of them still pretty close. >> reporter: a lot of them are too close to call, particularly in oakland where we talked about them doing the ranked choice voting for the first time in this election. we'll talk about that coming up. but victories for the mayor of san jose, chuck reed, who was not actually working this election as a candidate but had a lot to lose by backing two measures that put him at odds with police and fire unions. let's look at san jose measure d which limits how much arbitrators can award to police and firefighters. measure d passing with 68% of the vote. another measure, measure w, which limits the compensation and benefits for future employees of the fire and police department, that one appears to be passing as well, 74% of voters saying yes to creating basically who is a system of new employees getting different benefits from existing employees. >>> let's talk about proposition 25 which was meant
