kris sanchez joins us from morgan hill tonight. this is a big number from one county, what's the explanation here? >> reporter: it is a shocking number, raj, but what i found out is that number also includes girls who have chosen to run away from the homes they are supposed to be, it includes girls living with non-custodial parents, and in those cases the law enforcement haven't forced them to go back where they are supposed to be, but in the cases where there's a suspicious disappearance, such as in the case of sierra lamar or the girls are considered at risk, the response is quite different. sierra lamar smiles from flyers posted all around santa clara county, though her's is the face and name we know, there are 63 other girls reported missing since january of 2011. at today's press conference regarding of the arrest of a suspect in sierra's disappearance, sheriff laurie smith spoke of those other girls. >> you wonder if they were abductions also. >> reporter: antolin garcia-torres is linked to a 2009 attempted stun-gun assault i

kris sanchez joins us with more on the car and what they need from the public. >> reporter: the sheriff's department isn't saying whether or not they have that car in their custody or in their possession when they asked for the public's help. what they are saying is they got a lot of outpouring of support and tips from the public and they're not saying whether one of those tips led to the car. this is the car that santa clara county investigators wanted to find in connection to sierra lamar's disappearance on march 16th. investigators say they have the car in their possession and are now doing forensic work looking for clues. sergeant jose cardoza said the family took that find as a positive find. >> we wanted to make sure they didn't recognize the vehicle and nobody close to the family owned the vehicle and if they knew if it may have been related to sierra and they did not. >> reporter: the sheriff's department announced that find only one day after they announced that they were looking for that older model red jetta with a black hood. sergeant cardoza says the still images are lifted f

kris sanchez has the new details. >> reporter: hi there.hen you talk missing children, law enforcement is quick to point out not all cases are the same. among the 63 girls missing reported in the last 17 months here in santa clara county are included runaways and girls living with noncustodial parents and it is often not until the girls are considered at risk or when they disappear under suspicious circumstances do we learn who they are. on the website of the national center for missing and exploited children there are 61 california girls reported missing in the last two years. with you but on average there are 25,000 active missing persons cases in our state. since january of last year 63 in santa clara county alone. as smith announced the arrest of antolin garcia-torres, she also mentioned the other missing girls. >> you wonder if any of those were abductions, also. >> reporter: under the sheriff's jurisdiction are not. >> the other cases we have involving minors don't fit the profile. >> reporter: many of the girls missing are considered

in the newsroom, kris sanchez, nbc bay area news. >> thank you so much, kris. >>> in local news, a glimmer of hope for the first time in weeks, a new clue in the search for sierra lamar. today investigators released a description to a car they believe is tied to the 15-year-old's disappearance. kimberly tere is live in morgan hill with the new details. kimberly? >> reporter: police say its interviews and surveillance video that have led them to really focus their efforts on one car in particular that they really say they want to know a lot more about. take a good look at this car. it's similar to the one santa clara county sheriff detectives say is on several surveillance video tapes. the car is described as a 1990s red four-door volkswagen jetta with a black hood. >> it was observed in the area near her mom's house and near where some of the other evidence items were collected. we can't tell who was inside the car at that time, but it -- it's more than just a coincidence. >> reporter: police say the car was spotted on several residential, school bus and vta surveillance videos the morning
