"today in the bay's" kris sanchez is live at valley medical center. first to damian trujillo. tell us what you've learned. >> reporter: nothing so figures so far from officials but we are hearing two off-duty oakland firefighters were shot here outside of the gordon biersch brewery in japan town. one was killed. the crime investigations unit is still here. this happened at 9:30, and they are still here some six hours or so after this all happened here in downtown san jose. still a lot of unanswered questions. police need to know what led up to this incident here in japan town. police say the victims were attending a weekly music festival. not the restaurant but the brewery. and for some unknown reason investigators say they were shot across the street from the brewery. police detained one person after a short pursuit. they are canvassing the area at this hour to make sure there are no more suspects that may have been involved in this incident. sources tell me the firefighters were young, fresh out of the academy. this morning still few answers as to what led to the shooting. >

this is where we find kris sanchez live to explain what led up to the shooting. kris? >> in the last half hour san jose police confirmed the suspect in the deadly shooting is still at large. officers are still onscene here at the liquor store gathering evidence which might be easier now that the sun is starting to come up. this appears to be a botched robbery inside that liquor store and the parking lot is still locked down. officers say they found one man shot and pairics tried to save him but it was just too late. the coroner only took the body away about an hour ago so we don't yet know the identity of the victim nor whether it was an employee of the liquor store or perhaps a customer. san jose police are keeping us about 300 feet back from the scene. the liquor store is pretty far back off the road so i would not anticipate any impact to traffic this morning. i have passed that on to mike inouye as well this morning. we know that there are surveillance cameras up and down the strip mall and we know that police are likely going to be looking at that for any sort of

i'm kris sanchez. we are in a micro climate weather alert because of that heat warning and advisory. >> we're talking heat advisories and warnings which means, yes, we're climbing into triple digit heat and up to 110 in some areas. current temperatures right now you probably noticed it's warmer than we've been seeing. the 24-hour temperature change, an increase of about five degrees. san jose at 65 degrees. we are seeing a heat advisory for the highlighted areas until 9:00 p.m. monday and that's because of the high 90s, possibly even 105 in the peninsula, east bay, shoreline and all valley areas. then the heat warnings will be in effect until 9:00 p.m. friday including the east bay and of course the tri-valley bringing enhanced fire danger through the weekend. we are expecting triple digit heat not just for today but the start of the workweek. take a look at some of these temperatures. 98 degrees for san jose. a closer look at what we can expect in the upcoming workweek in 15 minutes. >> shocking to se

kris sanchez live with a new citations we learned about overnight. kris?reporter: hi there, laura. three dozen tickets may have b.a.r.t. riders saying that's not a lot of tickets considering how many people ride b.a.r.t. but the idea is if you get a $250 ticket for fare evasion that perhaps you'll just pay the fare the next time. they were busted between about 5:00 and 9:00 last night at three stations. in addition to those citations b.a.r.t. officers arrested four people on unrelated warrants crimes. last night's focused enforcement is the result of the estimate 22,000 people ride for free every year at a cost of $25 million for the transit agency. b.a.r.t. committing $3 million to stop that practice and police enforcement is one part of the plan. also raising barriers at some stations to make it more difficult to evade those fares. i asked on twitter where you see the most fare evasions. robert says the worst fare evaders the elevator outside the fare gate. many evaders go up and down bypassing the gates and the staff. you can weigh in on facebook. i'll

"today in the bay's" kris sanchez live in fremont. a lot of citations from the agency. good morning, kris. >> reporter: it sounds like a lot, laura. in just a few hours b.a.r.t. police officers did cite about three dozen people for trying to cheat and ride b.a.r.t. for free. these are new numbers this morning. the crackdown was last night. the focus about 5:00 to 9:00 last night at the powell station, the richmond and fremont station. officers wrote 36 citations, but in addition to that the officers also arrested four people on unrelated warrants and crimes. last night's focused enforcement, as b.a.r.t. calls it, is part of the $3 million effort to stop fare evasion. i dug up some numbers and would you believe fare evaders cost about $25 million a year. that citation is a $250 ticket. a few dozen people cited is really just a drop in the bucket. b.a.r.t. says as many as 22,000 people steal rides, jumping turnstiles, sneaking in behind a paying passenger, or just straight walking on to a train. if you follow me on facebook and twitter, i want to hear from you, where do yo

. >> "today in the bay's" kris sanchez to explain why firefighters really worried about today's extreme heat, kris. >> reporter: we just saw the temperature dip on that gauge back there to 59 degrees. that's normal when the sun is coming up for the heat goes away. we know the gauge will be 50 degrees higher during the hottest part of the day. things are so dry. alameda county battled south of livermore. they did it by air and on the ground. it is steep and rugged terrain. the progress of the fire was only stalled and not stopped. the fire is creeping into the regional park. you might want to steer clear of there during the heat of the day. triple digit heat during lunch time hour. firefighters could get a handle on it. the good news here is these are the only two wildfires burning here in the bay area. now as kari mentioned temperatures will start to come down tomorrow but once that grass is dry and the brush is dry, it is dry and is continuing to be a fire danger. i posted safety tips on facebook because often we think wild land fires are a problem for people who choose to live near op

i'm kris sanchez. >> and i'm marcus washington. you know, that heat throughout the area can get very dangerous for people and pets as we face an excessive heat warning in effect right now. meteorologist kari hall spearheads our heat coverage, and kari, how long can we expect this heat to continue? >> it will continue throughout the day and we'll start to feel those temperatures coming down tomorrow. before we even hit noon, we are feeling some of the temperatures where we should be for the high temperature throughout the afternoon. right now in concord, it's 82 degrees, and all clear there. the excessive heat warning continues until 9:00 this evening. it mostly includes the inland hills and elevations above 1,000 feet. that's where we will have the driest conditions and also the highest fire danger. for the interior valleys, we have a heat advisory in effect. that's all of these areas shaded in red where we could reach up to 103 degrees. and we are going to continue to have unhealthy air quality so the spare the air alert continues
