nbc bay area kris sanchez at that rally and joins us live. what do advocates and workers really want here, kris? >> the folks at the rally just moved inside to the supervisors' chambers where they spoke in public comment and ask supervisors to protect workers from developers who are working with taxpayer dollars. they want to make sure they're not abused with wage theft or human trafficking. now, as the santa clara county supervisor meeting the advocates will ask supervisors to create an audit or system or program for any developer using some of the $900 million in housing bond money. they want worker protection against slavery and human trafficking and sexual assault and harassment. >> it's more a labor compliance. let's say that the county was able to put in a labor compliance unit, meaning that a group of inspectors, let's say an inspector to go to the site and talk to the workers, not on a daily basis, maybe but weekly basis talking to the workers. how are you doing? are you being paid? >> now, among other things, advocates want to avoid a

today in the bay's kris sanchez joins us live with a look at some of the local numbers this morning and how we can try to keep our kids healthy. good morning, kris. >> well, hi there, laura. sometimes it feels like it's an uphill battle, but what we know about the mieasles outbreak is the people who contracted it were not vaccinated. and california state law requires all public school children be vaccinated against the measles virus. now, this is a website where you can check the vaccination rate for your kid's school. i punched in san jose as an example for you. you can see mostly green dots. the yellow and red dots are charter schools. i'm going to post a link to this site on my twitter feed and on my facebook page, so you can check your own neighborhood schools where your kids attend. so the good news is that the risk is lower for public school children, but you could be at risk, particularly if you travel for work or for fun. according to the cdc, between january and july of this year, 107 people got measles here in california, and in 20 other states plus washington, d.c. a lot of t

. >> kris sanchez live with what we know so far. she was out there very early. what's the latest? >> hi, there. firefighters are investigating this as a suspicious fire. in fact, investigators are here on the scene. we want to show you the video of when the fire started. it was a very aggressive fire. it burned very fast here at cafe paradise on monterey road and old tully road. it burned for about 20 minutes before firefighters were able to get it under control. when we were here, we saw firefighters up on the roof looking down into the building or onto the rooftop. it appears perhaps that's where the fire originated. we can't confirm that yet because the fire is under investigation. what we can tell you is that the owner was out here and told our early morning crew that this is the fourth time this restaurant has caught fire. and certainly that person wants to know who's responsible or how this fire started this time around. this is at old tully road and monterey road, right across from oak hill cemetery, not too far from the fairgrounds. a very busy thoroughfare in the morning,

. >> kris sanchez live there now with changes we'll see in the coming months. good morning. >> hi there, laura and scott. you know that feeling you get when you think you're getting all the green lights on the way to where you're headed? the city of palo alto is going to spend green to make sure drivers can get through university avenue a little easier without cutting into some of the residential streets. let me show you where we're talking about. this is a map, we're talking university avenue where we are this morning, between middlefield road and dumbarton bridge, and also on donahoe road on east palo alto. the idea is to get drivers moving through palto alto quickly and keep them from diverting into some of the residential areases. the city estimates that synchronizing the lights could cut the time drivers spend in traffic by up to 40%. the metropolitan transportation commission agreed and ponied up an $81,000 grant. the city of palo alto will pitch in $15,000 of its own money. city crews will do the work in the next several weeks. the is software thing and

i'm kris sanchez.table. in the wake of the violence which included the stabbing of a 18-year-old in what police believe is a random attack. one measure under consideration is an idea to temporarily increase weekly work days for bart officers from five days a week to six. according to some reports, bart officers are concerned about being overworked. if board members sign off on that plan, it could cost close to $30 million to roll it out. speaking of bart and transportation, we want to check in with your commute. >> we have a couple of minor issues that could be causing some delays. first one is in the south bay along winchester boulevard. the right hand shoulder is blocked due to a crash. it's causing delays through winchester boulevard so get off and take surface streets andato. southbound crash at 680. you can expect heavy delays through that area. your east bay drive times, some slight slowing, but nothing major along southbound 880 from 238 to highway 84. you're looking at 16 minutes. a quick remin

i )m kris sanchez -- laura and marcus are off. scott -- let )s walk folks through this. on emission standards. scott, let's start walking through this. >> to understand what happened today, there are kind of two things you need to know up front. first is california gets to do what it wants when it comes to emissions and fuel efficiency standards. we have the toughest in the country. second, back when barack obama was president he said all cars would have to be really fuel efficient by 2020, 41 miles per gallon and 54 miles per gallon by 2045. this morning the trump administration said those goals were too hard and it is going to back down on how fuel efficient cars have to be. more importantly, to the u.s. and to us is that the white house also wants to take away california's ability to set its standards. california is critical to this white house strategy. 14 states, 15 if you include us, follow california's standards. if the trump administration wants to lower future standards for the rest of the nation that would mean car companies have to build two kinds of cars, the

we immediately sent kris sanchez to the scene. do police think that the jogger was distracted? >> reporter: in fact they know the jogger was wearing not only headphones but was sunglasses. that can be a dangerous combination. this is the stretch where the jogger was. it appears the jogger was trying to cross the tracks and not run alongside or run on top of them. the trail is underdeveloped. if i can turn alan to the other side, you'll see what the trail would look like. you see it is paved on the other side of lafayette. perhaps this jogger didn't know that this part of the trail wasn't fully complete. we were also here as passenger on that ace train were taken off the train, loaded to buses, and were transported to the great america parkway station not too far from here. it is a pretty remote area. so hard to know how long that jogger might have been out here, although we know, of course, that there was a conductor on the train. one of the passengers we talked with who rides this train regularly says that it appears that the conductor tried to stop and deployed a sandbag to t

nbc bay area's kris sanchez is following the latest. do we know the reason? >> reporter: the reaction is rolling in to what might not be a surprising resignation of the independent police auditor when's noewheo's meant to investigate. we'll start with what ipo aaron sister wrote. in part he says, unfortunately, the extraordinary personal attacks on my office and my work have become a distraction from the important goals of reform and expanded oversight of the poli police. the mayor accepted the resignation saying last night thanking him for his service and wishes him well. san jose police union calling for the resignation after the ipa analyzed a report of racial disparity with the use of force by officers. the police union accused the ipa of bias because the sample size was so small. he again drew criticism meeting with protesters before they dpl demonstrates against the use of police force. in june, the police chief blasted him saying the repeated acts of disrespect by the current ipa are reprehencible. if for this process to work, the rank and file needs t

today in the bay's kris sanchez spent the night looking into this and she joins us live outside of the health department. this is frightening for a lot of parents, especially with kids heading back to school. >> yeah, you know, the cdc has not specified which communities are impacted directly, but what we do know is that most of the people who have gotten sick in this measles outbreak were not vaccinated. we also know that california state law requires public school children to have that mmr vaccine in order to go to school in a public school. i pulled up this website here, called shots for schools. you can check the vaccination rate for your kid's school by kindergarten to seventh grade, the two critical grades where immunizations happen. i used san jose, a lot of green on the map, but the yellow and red maps are charter schools. you'll want to check your schools if your kids don't go to public schools. i posted a link so you can check your neighborhood school. so the good news is that the risk seems lower for public school children because of that vaccine requirement, but you could b
