i'm kris sanchez in for laura and marcus this morning. lanes of eastbound 80 are open after a wrong-way driver collided with incoming traffic killing one person near the 580 interchange. calls came in about a wrong-way driver crashing head on into cars. one person was arrested an an investigation is under way. >>> developing right now caldor fire r cal fire counts 18 wildfires burning across the state. you can see it here on your screen some of the most notable ones, the dixie fire and the caldor fire. this morning there are concerns over a new wildfire prompting evacuation orders in auburn. this is the bridge fire that started under the foresthill bridge in the auburn state recreation area. this quickly grew to 250 acres triggering an evacuation order for about 500 people. evacuation warnings have been issued for more people there. right now the fire is still burning out of control. no reports yet of homes being destroyed. we'll hope that it stays that way. >>> a lot of people in lake tahoe are settling in after a wild week of escaping t

i'm laura garcia. >> i'm kris sanchez. i'm here for marcus washington. first to the big story, the one we're all talking about. governor newsom started the recall election as governor newsom of california and end it as governor of california as well. newsom getting enough voters to vote no on that recall petition. ballots are still being counted but 64% of california's registered voters rejected the republican backed recall effort. 36% voted to replace him in office but in 2018 newsom won by 52% in his initial election as governor. >> the governor declaring victory in sacramento. a speech that was part stump and raw emotion. the governor went to party headquarters after nbc news announced he defeated the recall election and talked about what the results mean, a defeat for trumpism, victory for science and women and fair elections. toward the end of the speech he choked up a bit by referencing one of his political heros, bobby kennedy. >> tonight i'm humbled, grateful, but resolved in the spirit of my political hero, robert

i'm kris sanchez. good to be with you. marcus is still off this morning. >>> we're going to start with smoke in the sky this morning. we'll get to meteorologist kari hall. good morning. >> good morning. as you're waking up and heading out the door, air quality looks pretty good. this is our current sensors where we see green that means good. but in the trivalley moderate air quality there as well as the south bay. a few spots waking up to smoke here and there. as we go into this afternoon, moderate air quality for parts of the north bay, the coast as well as the east bay. south bay should see some improving air quality and moderate for santa clara valley. this is as temperatures will stay very warm today, reaching into the mid 90 for the inland east bay. low 90s for the north bay and san jose and parts of the south bay in the mid to upper 80s and low 90s there. we'll talk more about what's ahead as our temperatures come down going through the week and looking even ahead to the weekend as we see some major changes. that's c

"today in the bay's" bob redell is live in the east bay. talk to us about this extension, why? >> good morning to you, marcus and kris. a few reasons why it is going to be hotter today, especially in the inland valleys where i'm at in dublin, east bay, other parts of solano county. you've also got more people returning to work, they're pre-covid routines and with cars on the road and the pollution and you have the wildfires burning up north. we're going to see some of the smoke from there coming into our area. so the bay area air quality management district does want you to limit your time in your cars today and for your own health if you're going to be outdoor, especially if you're go

. >> i'm kris sanchez. laura has the day off. we begin with the desperate battle that firefighters are waging in south lake tahoe to try to save homes as that caldor fire moves in. >> we sent "today in the bay's" bob redell to the caldor fire and, bob, i know we've talked about a lot of people exiting that area. how was drive up there? >> highway 50 once you got into the fire zone extremely smoky to the point where you had to really slow down and look for the lanes in the road. we found an area here on echo summit along highway 50 where we have some clear air and you can see the fire burning behind me. unfortunately the conditions for today are not good for the fire fight. there is a red flag warning in effect until 11:00 tonight which means the conditions are right for extreme fire behavior, and the fact that it also means that humidity levels are low and the fuels are extremely try and the winds will be gusty, forecast to be as high as 50 miles per hour. as the caldor fire spreads, authorities have issued evacuation orders for

i'm kris sanchez. >> i'm scott mcgrew. in for laura and marcus. our big story, the fire and weather. we've been watching live cameras across the bay area and i know we've been hoping to see a strike live, but we have not so far been quite successful. >> did see one on my drive in. meteorologist kari hall is tracking the storm cells and has been watching those lightning strikes on the computer model. so as we take a look at storm ranger our mobile doppler radar that gives us a good look at what is going on around the bay area, so all of the chances of lightning we've seen from the overnight hours is really starting to go down and we haven't seen any lightning strikes over the past hour or so. as we get a look at storm ranger, it is showing all of the activity we've had. i want to loop it going back about 12 hours because it was so busy at one point at about 2:00 to 3:00 in the morning

i am kris sanchez here for laura. >> i am marcus washington.y is the first day of fall, and meteorologist, kari hall, she's tracking september heat. how are things looking, kari? >> looking better today in terms of temperatures, and also air quality. we see some green dots indicating good air quality in parts of the north bay, and san francisco heading over towards oakland and down the peninsula, but where we see the yellow dots like spots like the east and hayward and san jose, we have moderate air quality but it will improve. as we are looking at the forecast in fremont, heading out the door, low 60s to start. once again, the temperatures won't be as hot as yesterday. we're talking about a high of 79 in hayward, and 76 in oakland, and concord reaching 89 degrees. this little cooldown doesn't last that long. we will see a boost in the temperatures starting tomorrow. i will look at that as well as our air quality in the forecast coming up in a few minutes. >>> covid vaccination requirements may be moving forward for some school districts. >> ci

"today in the bay's" bob redell is there live. >> good morning to you, kris and marcus. southbound 280 is reopened here in daly city. it's been reopened for about the past 30 to 45 minutes after a freeway shooting that took place overnight. you can take a look at this video that came in to our newsroom. several people were taken to the hospital according to chp with possible bullet wounds. their condition is unknown. again, this happened on southbound 280 just after the eastmoor exit in daly city. the call came in a little bit after 1:30 this morning about an older modelled gold colord gms suv that crashed into the side wahl. the back window and one of the side windows were blown out either by gunfire or the impact to the collision into the wall. everyone in the suv was injured and taken to the hospital. chp officers had their flashlights out searching the freeway possibly for bullet casings. we believe the shooter was

"today in the bay's" kris sanchez joins us live this morning. has the mayor said anything about this yet? >> well, we have not heard from mayor london breed at this point and it's been a few days since she was spotted out and about maskless. that is, mayor london breed in the middle of the photo posted to and then removed from the black cat's nightclub instagram page. the city's indoor mask order does allow for people to remove their masks eating or drinking and there are drinks on the table. when enacting the mandate the order requires all videos, regardless of vaccination status, to wear face coverings will limited exceptions. "the chronicle" reports breed az dancing and singing and posing for pictures without a mask. a chronicle reporter said she -- the mayor said she felt safe because she gets tested often and everyone had to show proof of vaccination to get into that club. now a gym owner who is subject to that indoor mask mandate is frustrated. >> she clearly thinks it's fine and it's safe to remove her masks and let that be the rule for e

kris sanchez joins us live with how soon that vaccine could be available. >> reporter: hi there, marcus. for a lot of parents with kids that are in that elementary school age group, it just cannot happen soon enough because covid cases have been going up as the kids have gone back to school in person with no vaccine protection, just the protection afforded by masks, social distancing and having the adults in their lives vaccinated. pfizer announced this morning that its data for trials in children 5 to 11 show that the vaccine is safe and produces strong immune response in the 2,000 children in the trial. the dose for children this age is about a third of what children 12 and up are getting. they submitted the status. by the end of september. it hopes of getting approval or authorization soon after. a pfizer senior vice president explained that the efficacy data is still coming, but for now the fda will consider that antibody response. >> the level of antibody the vaccine is generating in children 5 to 11 matches the level of antibody that we know provides protection for individuals 16
