today in the bay's kris sanchez is live this morning. kris, i understand you. you've learned some information. yes, we did get a late night update from oakland police. we know that the two people who were shot and sent to the hospital, they are in stable condition. but as you mentioned, there are several people detained. we just don't know who they are and what the motivation for the shooting might have been overnight. oakland police did give us a few a bit more information, saying that the shooting happened inside the school in the north part of the school, and appeared to have started with some sort of dispute. now, while the victims are said to be adults, we have not been able to clarify whether they were young adults and whether they were students. last night, witnesses told us there were people running in all directions once that gunfire happened, oakland police did have help setting up a perimeter and helping the crowd get away from the area from the chp, so no one was injured trying to leave. now, a graduate told us that it happened right after the cerem

nbc bay area's kris sanchez shows us the tents, ending with law enforcement at miramar park. all quiet now here at this property, which is owned by uc berkeley, you can see some of the graffiti remaining, and there is a heavy security presence to make sure that protesters don't come back within 24 hours of taking over the abandoned building owned by uc berkeley, berkeley police and other agencies shut down the streets nearby and moved in to arrest those 12 protester. they now face charges, including burglary, vandalism and conspiracy. berkeley police say they violently resisted arrest, hitting officers with crowbars in the head. the officers were wearing helmets and were uninjured, according to the university. only one of the 12 is a student. the arrests come just days after the on campus tent protest disbanded after the student protesters and uc berkeley officials reached an agreement. we talked with a berkeley man who lives nearby who thinks this is not over yet. i think people are just the pro-palestinian protesters are just fed up at this point after for that many months.

today in the bay kris sanchez joins us now from our newsroom with a tactic that's really hitting a sour note here. chris. oh, so, laura, this is an encampment of unhoused people who are living behind an east bay tire shop that's been in san rafael for years now. things have been mostly harmonious until about four days ago when the music started. take a listen. now, one of the people who lives in the encampment near lincoln avenue and second street says the music started about five days ago. it is a loop of music that blares all night long. the folks at east bay tire don't want to talk to us at this point about the overnight music, but the president of the marin homeless union says this escalation is about forcing the unhoused people to pack up and move. i think right now, the property owner is trying to facilitate is being emboldened by the city of san rafael's antagonism towards camp integrity and trying to help facilitate the city's mission of forcing everybody out. now, the city of san rafael did not respond to our requests for comments about the claim that it is trying to dissolve t

kris sanchez joins us now.ome of this is due to fears that gas tax revenues may completely just go away, evaporate. yeah. so as we're standing at the gas pump watching the dollar amount go up and up, it certainly doesn't feel like the state is collecting less gas tax, but with more people driving electric vehicles and a looming ban on gas vehicles, the state really has to tap a different funding source for our road repairs. so they are launching a pilot program looking for about 800 drivers to participate for six months, starting in august. you drive as usual with a survey at the beginning and a survey at the end. the difference is if you are in this pilot program, you will pay by the mile instead of by the gallon. participating drivers could earn up to $400 and you would be reimbursed for any gas taxes that you pay or any electric vehicle registration fees to make sure that you are not double paying, the state has to rethink how it pays for highway and road repairs, because about $0.58 of every gallon used to

kris sanchez. today in the bay. all right. thanks for the latest, chris.ppening today. pro palestine. palestine activists planned to protest outside of google i o developers conference today. this is at shoreline amphitheater in mountain view. that event spotlights the company's most anticipated projects. now you may remember, google recently fired dozens of workers who protested inside google offices. that conference starts at 9:00 this morning. well, bay area thieves are targeting tesla and ev charging stations to steal the copper metal inside those cables. over the weekend, someone cut cables from nine of those charging stations in vallejo, causing thousands of dollars in damage inside those cables. it's a dense layer of copper, which those thieves can sell for around $3 a pound, depending on how many of those cables they actually still, they can make a couple of hundred dollars ev car users say that that trend, they're seeing more and more, and it's an indication of this is the tough times we're seeing across the bay area. we actually spoke with one of

i'm marcus washington, and i'm kris sanchez. i'm here for laura garcia, who is off. first, we want to start with developing news. the oakland fire department is still on the scene of a large lumber yard fire just off 880. and you can see how massive those flames got last night. obviously a very different scene this morning. and that's where we find today in the bay's bob redell. and bob, do we have an update on what the cause is of this fire? there is a man who works at a gas station next door. the economy lumber that burned here on high street. marcus and kris. and he says recently he's seen a number of fires started in this area by unhoused people. but oakland fire department, they have cast doubt on that as being the cause for what this fire was yesterday. you could see the cause still under investigation. fire is contained, but the firefighters are still been pouring water on and off this morning onto the structure to make sure that nothing flares back up. you can see it is smoldering. still, now that we're getting the sun up, this is what the fire looked like la

kris sanchez joins us now.ome of this is due to fears that gas tax revenues may soon completely evaporate, right? yeah. that is coming down the road. so when we are at the gas pump watching the dollar number go up, up, up, it's really little consolation to know that the gas tax is paying for road maintenance, about $0.58 per gallon. but one problem with that is that as more people transition to electric cars, that means fewer dollars for road repairs. now check out this pilot program the state is launching and is looking for about 800 drivers to participate for six months starting in august. you drive as you usually do. take a survey at the beginning. take a survey at the end. the difference is these drivers will pay their taxes by the mile instead of by the gallon. participating drivers could earn up to $400, and they will be reimbursed for any gas taxes or electric vehicle registration fees they pay, just to make sure that they're not getting double dipped. now, here's why the state wants to rethink highway a

kris sanchez. today in the bay. all right. certainly something we will follow, chris. thank you. hours, the man convicted of attacking paul pelosi is set to face sentencing. prosecutors are asking for 40 year sentence. for david depape. it is a sentence longer than the one recommended by the u.s. probation office, which recommends 25 years in prison. depape was convicted of breaking into the pelosi home in pacific heights in san francisco, attempting to kidnap then speaker nancy pelosi. he attacked her husband, paul pelosi, with a hammer. he's also charged in state court with assault, with attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon. he has pleaded not guilty. well, good news if you're planning a getaway down the coast, all of highway one through big sur is opening again this morning after storms of late march triggered slides and forced closures lasting weeks. the reopening also comes a little early, more than a week sooner than initial projections. for the past two months, locals were relying on convoys twice a day to get in and out of that area. be aware if you're actual

i'm kris sanchez, and i'm marcus washington. let's get right to that breaking news today in the bay's ginger conejero saab. she's live for us at regency regional medical center. this is where one of those officers is fighting for their life. now. bob redell is live at the scene where the shots were fired. bob, have you learned anything about what happened before this? we know that san jose police were responding to a disturbance here at the extended stay america. behind me, here on san ignacio avenue. this was around 1030 last night. this is something that the police department has put out on social media, and we are expecting to hopefully get more information from them during our news conference later today. but as they were responding to this disturbance, there was a man they made contact with. and according to police, this man shot two police officers. officers returned fire and they hit that man. the two officers were taken to the hospital. fortunately, one has been released. ginger will have an update on that. the suspect a

kris sanchez today in the bay. all right, chris, thank you.ell, the fire is finally out this morning at a buddhist temple in san jose's alum rock neighborhood. crews spent the night monitoring the hot spots temple located on foss avenue near 680 and alum rock. neighbors shared video with us showing the flames that were shooting into the air. investigators tell us there were four people inside at the time, but fortunately they all made it out safely. so the vast majority of this building is a large meeting area. fortunately, there was no meetings at the time. the only people who were in the building were the four people who live in the building. they live in a in a small unit that's towards the rear of the building above a garage. space crews managed to keep the fire from spreading to nearby homes. the cause of that fire is under investigation. a man who says he owns a building says he thinks the fire started in the kitchen bay area thieves are targeting tesla and ev charging stations to steal the copper metal inside those cables over the weeke
