nbc bay area's kris sanchez has more on the way. one district is handling that, and ai in the classroom. there's no question that cell phones can be a tremendous distraction. according to a survey by the advocacy group common sense media, 97% of teenagers say they use their cell phones during the day, 72% of high school teachers and 33% of middle school teachers said cell phone distraction is a major problem in their classrooms. california would not be the first to ban cell phone use during class time already. florida, indiana, louisiana and south carolina banned phones either during class or during the school day, and there are a handful of other states that are either exploring policies or piloting policies to ban the cell phones. now, in the san ramon valley school district, the superintendent says banning the cell phones outright might not be the long term strategy that's best for our students in a digital world. and he says that's true of ai as well. i think we need to help our students long term build skills and responsibiliti

kris sanchez today in the bay. so sad. all right, chris, thank you. well, public safety was actually front and center at many night out events across the bay area. the national events giving people the chance to build stronger relationships with law enforcement and first responders in oakland, however, neighbors expressed concerns about public safety and the tug of war between oakland police and the mayor's office. the police officers union is now pushing for mayor sheng thao to resign. they sent her a letter demanding her to step down by tomorrow. for two years, almost two years, we've been waiting and we see this schiff is not steering in the right direction. the mayor calls the letter a distraction. she says crime is down more than 30%. numbers. the union disputes. i spoke one on one with mayor yesterday, and i asked her about the recent controversies inside the mayor's office with an ongoing grand jury investigation, including the recent fbi raid of her home. here's here here's some of what she had to say. i am not the target of any investigation.

our colleague kris sanchez spoke to that new superintendent, c.j. cammack, who just took over as superintendent of this school district. he comes here from fremont unified, where he held the same position. superintendent karma says san ramon valley will be solvent this school year, but will face some very difficult financial challenges next school year. in 20 2526, when the district will have to make up $16.5 million in reductions through reductions, reductions that he and his staff will spend this year trying to identify. we are definitely seeing some financial challenges based on how the state had miscalculated or mis projected their total revenue for the year last year, and districts across the state, including san ramon valley unified school district, are dealing with that burden of having to address the shortfall in revenue that's coming forward from the state. and so we will have many challenges in front of us to identify how we can reduce our expenditures without negatively impacting student programs and our personnel. so, yes, enrollment is

today in the bay's kris sanchez joins us with a look at the response from authorities as well.ood morning. well good morning. so the biggest gathering happened at lake merritt in oakland. and when we say it was big, we are talking hundreds of people on motorcycles, dirt bikes. what looked to be motorized bikes, even atvs, those four wheelers that are supposed to be on the rough roads, not on grand avenue. that's where they took over at one point, the lawlessness escalated and some of them broke into a convenience store and took items also, the back window of that suv smashed out. police did not confirm that that was related. however, that was the only arrest that we saw. officers taking one man into custody. he was wearing a helmet, but many of the dozens of people who took to the bay bridge both saturday and sunday were not, and chp says that's a major concern. a major safety issue on sunday, bikers, bicyclists took over san francisco, at one point blocking a muni line in the castro. it is not clear whether these are the same people, but regardless, the dangerous behavior is t

the uc president is planning to step down today in the bay's kris sanchez joins us now with the look mpact this will have. kris. well, the five years that the uc president serve have to be among the most difficult in recent history. doctor michael drake took over the uc system in july of 2020, toward the end of his 50 year career in education. he is stanford and ucsf educated, a physician and a professor, and the first black person to ever serve as uc president. doctor drake led the university of california's 300,000 students on ten campuses through the pandemic, remote learning, social unrest, labor strikes, and most recently, those prolonged protests against the war in gaza. he is also credited with negotiating a funding deal with the state to provide more stability to the system, and he began the work toward greater tuition stability and debt free education in the years to come. now in a statement, doctor drake said, at every turn i have sought to listen to those i serve to uphold our shared uc values and to do all i could to leave this institution in better shape than it was befor
