and kris van cleave reports on conditions there and all across the northeast. >> reporter: most roads and rails are open again in the northeast with a monster blizzard in the forecast governorrers in the room imposed strict travel bans overnight but in new york city, the storm did not pack the punch many expected. >> it is still weather. and that is the native of the beast. there is a certain imprecision. >> reporter: the storm pummeled massachusetts. cape cod is under 18 inches of snow and on nantucket wind gusts top 75 miles an hour. >> nantucket was hit hard with power outages. >> reporter: east end of long island with two feet of snow in parts of suffolk county. the state is sending extra equipment and personnel to get this area cleaned up. drivers are being urged to use extreme caution. >> it's slick. under the snow is ice. >> reporter: new york is getting back up to speed after it was shut down for the night. subways are running and traffic is moving but many workers are off for the day and so are schoolchildren. it was a snow day for thousands of kids from maine to new jersey.

kris van cleave is in comack, long island, just east of new york city. kris, good morning. >> reporter: marie, as of 3:00 a.m., the national weather service has recorded more than 15 inches of snow out here on long island. the wind is blowing. the snow, visibility is low, and driving is certainly very treacherous. snowplows faced the brunt of the northeast blizzard overnight as snow and strong winds battered long island. >> the wind and visibility and everything, it's not too good. >> reporter: police in humvees patrolled the snow-covered roads as the nor'easter kicked into gear monday evening, parking itself over the east coast, feeding off the ocean. >> here you can see the spin, right? look at the tail. this moisture plume goes all the way down to basically cuba. there is nothing but a lot of available moisture here. >> reporter: that moisture means snow. forecasters predict up to three feet in some areas. six states have declared states of emergency. in massachusetts, connecticut and parts of new york, it is actually illegal to be out on the roads. >>

kris van cleave reports. >> reporter: gunfire in eastern belgium thursday night after police conducted-terror raid. two suspected terrorists died a third taken into custody. [ non-english language ] >> reporter: a federal prosecutor says the raid was launched against suspected terrorists who had just returned from syria. he says the group was about to carry out major terrorist attacks in belgium when police confronted the suspects, the prosecutor says the suspects opened fire. the raid comes during a busy week. belgium police detained a known arms dealer who said he was in touch with amedy coulibaly who killed four people inside a kosher grocery store in paris last friday before police killed him. it's not known whether the arms dealer supplied the weapons used in that attack. coulibaly was also connected with the kouachi brothers who attacked the charlie hebdo magazine killing 12. the belgian prosecutor declined to give details saying other operations are continuing. belgium raised its national security level in response to the latest violence. kris van cleave, cbs news, new york. >>
