kris van cleave, cbs news, washington. >>> we're learning new two u.s. soldiers who were killed in afghanistan. according to "the new york times," the two servicemembers were killed in an ambush in the eastern wardak province on wednesday. these latest deaths bring the total number of american fatalities in afghanistan this year to nine. the deaths occurred one day after an unannounced visit by secretary of state mike pompeo to kabul. the u.s. is holding dereket talks with the taliban that are scheduled to resume this weekend in qatar. >>> and police are searching a house in salt lake city as part of an investigation of a missing university stay tunmackenzie lu. police say she met someone at a park and didn't seem to be in distress. they're now searching a home in relation to the case. >> we'll continue to follow the lead until this is resolved. we'll have more information for you as we find what we find inside this house here. >> police say there is no evidence of foul play, but they are worried lueck has missed classes and scheduled flights. >>> coming

kris van cleave got an exclu ve look inside uber's testing facility. >> reporter: okay, here comes atrian. >> driving down make-believe lane is what uber hopes is a very real future. he blew a stop sign. this is uber's self-driving test track in pittsburgh. we took a ride with the project's chief scientist raquel urtasun. is this car as good of a driver as the average human is? >> uh, not yet. >> reporter: on this 54-acre, closely guarded facility, uber is building its return to autonomous driving after the march 2018 crash where a self- driving uber hit and killed a woman crossing a street in tempe, arizona. eric meyhofer leads uber's autonomous driving unit.ni after uber's fatal accident, the number of people who said they were afraid to drive in a self- driving car rose to 71%, up from 63% a year ago. do you think the improvements to the technology are such that, that kind of accident wouldn't happen again? >> i think that, yes. it's a little enthusiastic and maybe presumptuous to think that there will never be an accident in a self-driving car. it's inevitable, and there will be.

kris van cleave is outside reagan national airport. kris, it soimds like another setback for boeing. what's behind it?mo failotve bg through changes with a flight simulator in seattle. it was during that testing that they discovering this new issue that they believed to be a pre-existing problem with the airplane. during what was described as a favored scenario where the nose was pushed down in both crashes, they discovered the flight controller can become overloaded. that slows it down, essentially allowing it to continue longer than it should. the faa's concern is if during the scenario it presented itself during an actual flight, it could increase the occurrences of a crash. boeing believes they could address this issue. if it doesn't, the company may have to face the company. yesterday ceo dennis muilenburg said by the time the boeing is up and certified, it will be one of the safest planes ever to fly. the faa says it will not conduct the flight board test until this issue is resolved. yesterday united airlines joined america and s
