what about the republican side here, kristen? >> well, contessa it's interesting. one of the things that president obama has been calling for is a balanced approach, entitlement reform, tax reform. it will be interesting to see if this committee can get that. we're seeing those republicans that you just put up on the senate side, senator john kyle, senate too maniy, senator portman and then on the house side, when sarling, camp and upton. camp says on the ways and means committee. so he's been dealing with tax reform for quite a while. a lot of people wondering is this an admission by republicans that they know that tax reform will in fact need to be on the table here. having said that, all six of these picks signed that pledge by grover norquist not to increase taxes. so we'll to have see how that plays out. again, the president expected to put his own proposal forward here, contessa. as you say democrats feel he's not doing enough. they are focused on the proposal. we haven't heard from the white house when the proposal will be releesd or exactly what it's going

and kristen, the president speaking a short time ago was highly critical of the congress saying that it should not be the risk of economic catastrophe for people to take action, and is there an abiding sense of annoyance of how tough this process has been at the white house? >> well, the word around here is frustration. there is, martin, some annoyance with how this whole process has been handled, and president, himself, called it messy, and other people have called it an ugly process, but look, the white house is arguing that this is a good compromise, and that a crisis has been averted here and that the debt ceiling has been increased through the 2012 elections which is a good thing and what president obama had been fighting for all along so that the congress and the white house don't have to come back to renegotiate this debt ceiling issue in the middle of the campaign season. having that said, members of the president's own party are frustrated, martin, saying that the bill slashes government spending and putting the burden on the poor and the middle-class and does not increase t

let's get to nbc's kristen welker live at the white house for us. kristen, the president once again addressing the nation and talking about irene today. >> he reminded people that he is still work to be done. as you said there has been a little bit of second guessing about the response to this storm. white house officials say this is the appropriate response as you mentioned they were keenly aware of what happened during hurricane katrina when president bush was really hammered for his reaction to that storm. we remember that iconic image of him flying over the hurricane zone in air force one. fema administrator craig fugate said to the media, look, we did learn some lessons from hurricane katrina. one of them was to dispatch crews and emergency equipment ahead of the storm so they could be in place to actually respond to what was happening. we saw this reaction from governors and mayors across the eastern seaboard who told their residents to get out and stay indoors. of course, as you mentioned, savannah, this was a damaging storm, more than 20 peo

. >> and i'm kristen sze. >> let's begin with breaking news in san francisco. right now firefighters are on the scene of a infrastructure fire in the haight-ashbury. live near the intersection of masonic avenue and haight street where a lot is going on. >> firefighters are pretty quick on this one. they managed to show up within half an hour of the fire itself, pretty quickly attacked the flames. within the last, i don't know ten minutes or so, this thing is pretty much knocked down. you can see this crew of firefighters walking away from this particular fire. for the last few minutes, they were actually at a store called true which is a clothing steer. a witness says she saw the flames coming from around 5:00 this morning, about an hour ago. then she says that the flames then started going a next store business which is called people's cafe. i talked to her about what she saw. she said the flames were coming out quickly. fire crews arrived and they knocked of them down. at this point we're seeing a billow of smoke coming out of the roof of these particular bus
