kristen: no getting. you said the cdc director needs to sign off, assuming she does that in the next day or so, i guess booster shots could go into arms in a couple days? dr. gandi: absolutely. this weekend or monday. -- or monday. for over 65. kristen: what if you got the modernity shots originally -- moderna shots could they even get the pfizer? dr. gandi: there is looseness to the system. but moderna is holding up really well. a cdc study friday showed 93% persistent protection against hospitalizations regardless of age group. it was a little lower, 88% for pfizer and even lower for johnson & johnson. that means moderna is holding up well and they are looking at a booster with a lower dose. so, i would wait if you have had moderna. i am going to wait and see. kristen: the pfizer booster is supposed to come six months after the primary series. tell me what that means, does it mean six months after your second shot, and why six months? earlier, we were hearing maybe eight months. dr. gandi: the reason it

kristen can -- kristen: any severe illness? dr. bollyky: none. kristen: how would you say the efficacy -- in recent days we have been hearing the pfizer vaccine after 120 days becomes 77%, as opposed to 95% initially. do you have data on that? dr. bollyky: i do not. this is a placebo-controlled study. for every two people getting the medication, one is not. i do not know who is getting it and who is not. we have not had significant number of cases in our population, but i can't tell you who is getting the medicine and who is not. kristen: we talked about more steps. full data, peer review, cdc, when do you expect the shop will actually go into young arms? dr. bollyky: based on what we have seen, it is usually a month for the fda to review, i am hopeful this will start to see rollout for this age group next month before halloween. kristen: what about. there is nothing magic about five. what about preschool? younger than five? dr. bollyky: we participated in a dose finding part of the study , the phase one study. the age groups are broken down from

kristen: thank you very much. today is the deadline for health care workers in the state to be fully vaccinated. there is no exemption or extension, correct? >> there's no extension. there are rare possibilities of exemption. usually when someone is medically allergic to one of the components of the vaccines. but it is very rare. kristen: unlike other categories, not really a religious exemption. over 95% where you are are vaccinated. can you even afford to lose a few people in nursing? even here in the bay area, where hospitalizations were among the lowest in the area. >> we cannot afford staffing shortages. in new york, they did end up firing people who did not get vaccinated, and here it is pretty strict as well. it is not a clear firing but there are consequences if you do not get vaccinated in terms of not being able to come to work. i hope even that 5% gets vaccinated. kristen: i want to adjust this because you feel strongly that some of the messaging coming from the cdc was mistaken, or at least unclear and

kristen: thanks for having me on. kristen: i like to start with the good news. california, now one of three states to exit the cdc's high transmission category. what does that mean? does that mean we are over the surge and in good shape? >> we are definitely in good shape in california and in better shape in the bay area, for many reasons, including the continued protections and risk mitigation strategies that folks in our area do. us being in that elite tier of states escaping the lowest level is that we are the most popular state. the fact that we can be up there with for mont and connecticut says lots about what we are able to do. kristen: i know the southern states are currently in dire straits. how does it compare to last winter's surge? >> it reminds me of where we were in the darkest winter. we use the metric of icu bed availability. in certain states like florida and louisiana, for example, there is much more than 90% of icu beds occupied and in a large proportion of hospitals, so not just some icu beds. the fact we are talking about icu beds in an era o
