kristen: john, i think you agree on that point, don't you? john: i do, and particularly when justice so to my -- justice sotomayor or talks about qualified teachers, fewer ap courses offered around the country, that is really the heart of what needs to be done here. we can achieve greater diversity by dealing with and addressing the inequities that are at the k-12 level. that is a way of changing the demographics of higher education. so that is the work that needs to be done. and as sally points out, the legacy admissions is something that should go, rather than doubled down on what it had, harvard could've adjusted its policies to get rid of the extra points for children of at least put it on the alums and say, ok, so you have the benefit of having gone to harvard, the educational, the economic, the social benefits. you still need a leg up for your child, make them prove that they needed. that would've changed the demographics of the incoming classes and could have avoided this lawsuit, but we are now here and we need to focus on the k-12 st

i want to go to kristen holmes right now. kristen?t least one of them is related to a conspiracy charge. now, we don't know exactly what that means. but this is something that we believe the department of justice was trying to prove. we know they had brought in a number of lower level aides -- trying to prove this conspiracy theory that there had been a larger -- obstruction of justice. again, are we very clear? we don't know exactly what this conspiracy charges. all we know so far is that there are seven charges, and that one of, them at least is, relating to conspiracy. and we also know that the department of justice had brought in multiple sources trying to prove this point of conspiracy, trying to -- these lower level horses, essentially, from these lawyers, that i have talked to, trump lawyers, trying to prove that trump had a obstructed these lower level employees in some way, which would make for a possible conspiracy charge. again, we do not have details on this. all we know is that there are seven charges, and that at least o

now let's turn to kristen dahlgren in boston this morning. kristen, what is the latest on the search today? >> reporter: right. so we have these new vehicles that are on site right now, about three hours ago they lowered that french vessel, the victor 6,000 down into the sea. it is one of the few vessels on earth that can get to the depth of the "titanic." and could possibly link a cable to the submersible, to the titan and then begin the process if they find it and pull it up to the surface. that one is in the water. also a canadian rov off of the arctic horizon ship has been at the sea floor for the majority of the morning, scanning the sea floor. the search continues, we haven't heard any word of them finding the submersible yet. that search continues. if and when they find it, a u.s. crane ship is now standing by, which would be able to take whatever cable was linked to the titan and bring it up at a faster pace. so, this is still, as ana said, very much a rescue operation. they say all of those estimates, the time that we heard about the

right now, we will go to kristen ho holmes who is in new bedford, new jersey. any signs of movement? >> rahel, no movement yet, and we are keeping a close eye, and yes, we expect him to leave now, but as we know the former president runs late, and what we have learned about walt nauta, and we have seen him all weekend, and walt was by his side and has been for months and if not years, and what is important to note about this, there are questions as to whether or not nauta would continue to stay by trump after they were both indicted. and would he cooperate in some ways with the department of justice, but it appears he is staying by the former president, and traveling with him as he said, and what we do know is when he lands in florida, he is going to doral resort, and the political team will be there to meet with him, and suzy wile his campaign manager, and others, his lawyers, who are trying to beef up the florida-based team. two of the lawyers resigned, and he is looking for lawyers who are barred there who can help with the case. again, the big thing here is

i want to begin right there with the latest on the search and rescue with nbc's kristen dahlgren, we don't know for sure how long they may have breathable oxygen. we know yesterday it was 40 hours, now we're probably down to 15 if that was right. but clearly from the press conference we just heard, this is 100% search and rescue still? >> reporter: yeah, absolutely, chris, and as for that question about how much breathable air is on board, they wouldn't field that today, they said there were a lot of factors that play into it. they were reluctant to give a number. and they did say repeatedly, we need to have hope. this is a massive operation. it is still search and rescue, it is still ongoing. so there are five vessels now searching. three of them arrived today. they are expecting five more on site, including a french vessel that has a remote operated vehicle that they say has incredible state of the art technology on board that is expected to get there sometime late tonight or in the overnight hours so they're hopeful for that. they are trying to zoom in on where these noises are co

kristen? >> the scene behind you tells the tale of how strong that community really is. priscilla, thank you so much. >>> as we mentioned, that threat of more severe weather is ongoing. dylan is in for al this morning with everything we need to know to start the day so much severe weather over the last few days. >> it has been and it is kind of staying in the same general area it is real scary when the storms happen overnight right now, though, we have a lot of severe storms happening, especially across mississippi, where we do still at this time have severe thunderstorm warnings and even a tornado warning, just to the northwest of hattiesburg we also have some of the torrential downpours moving into southeastern parts of alabama, also along the panhandle of florida where we will see some of the torrential downpours. we could see as much as 4 inches of rain or so along the panhandle. it is this whole area in yellow where we could see wind gusts up to 60 miles per hour, hail an inch or more in

kristen welker joins us. kristen, what are you learning? >> lester, this is a major development. a federal grand jury indicting jack teixeira on six counts of willful retention and transmission of classified information related to national defense. teixeira was arrested at his home in massachusetts. this was two months ago. authorities say he posted the documents on a social media chat room, which the attorney general says could have caused exceptionally grave damage to national security if shared. teixeira's attorney said he never meant for the information to be widely disseminated. but the episode raising serious questions why somebody in a national guard unit who works in i.t. allegedly had access to some of the nation's most sensitive secrets. lester? >> kristen welker tonight, thank you. >>> news this evening that the justice department is investigating the stunning deal between the pga tour and saudi-backed liv golf. kaylee hartung has been following the story. kaylee, congress is investigating as well? >> yes, lester. the justice department's antitrust division and the sen

joining me now from boston is nbc news correspondent kristen dahlgren, kristen, is there any sign, howeyond what the navy even normally does? >> reporter: right, this is incorrectly complex. and unfortunately no sign so far. we have just gotten word, andrea, that france is joining, the french ministry in a statement telling nbc news that it has a robotic vessel that, an exploration robot, that is nearby. it's about 48 hours to get to the site. it's expected to be there now at 8:00 p.m. on wednesday. it has the capability of going to that 13,000 feet, where the wreckage of the "titanic" is. that's really been one of the complicating factors here is the sheer depth that they're dealing with. if you think about it the pressures down there are, you know, the equivalent of being under the empire state building made completely out of lead. so the pressure is so intense, that ordinary vehicles, even navy submarines, don't go that far. that's why they've been dealing with these submersibles. the problem with submersibles, of course, is they're dependent on a ship aboveground. sort of a mother

let's go back to kristen holmes.ho are in this crowd, right? major donors are people who just truly are among the most loyal supporters the former president has? >> reporter: absolutely, erin, these are some of the staunchest supporters. we've seen senator tommy tuberville, cash patel, many of which we know have had their own legal problems as well. one thing really striking to me that i have seen a handful of people who testified in front of that grand jury in that investigation that includes taylor -- who went before the grand jury just before that indictment came down, and it really goes to that question again of who exactly is going to be on the prosecutor's witness list who cannot communicate with the former president about this case. you have to remember that so many of these people are still in trump's inner circle, are still very close to the former president. as we watched walt nauta getting on that plane and going with him to -- and i am told it is going to be a shorter than average speech, but of course we

i want to bring in our chief white house correspondent kristen welker again. kristen. >> lester, you were just talking about walt nauta and laura there was outlining his role and his relationship to former president trump, and just to give a little bit more context about who walt nauta is and why there is so much focus on walt nauta. he is 40 years old. he spent 20 years in the navy. he then went on to be a valet at the white house, and then to become former president trump's body man. he was personally involved, according to this indictment, in the packing and moving around of these documents which contained classified and sensitive information, as was former president trump, by the way as well. one of the notable exchanges in the indictment that has gotten so much attention that involves walt nauta, let me just read you a part of this, lester. this was a question that he was asked by investigators, quote, do you have any information that could -- that could help us understand where they -- meaning the docu the boxes were kept, howwere kept, were were they lo

. >>> chief white house correspondent kristen welker joining us now. any reaction from the president or anyone at the white house tonight? >> not yet, lester so far the white house is not commenting on the indictment i can tell you the strategy inside the administration they are planning not to engage. the administration really sees no political upside to weighing in right now. instead you can expect mr. biden to continue to try to draw a split screen with his predecessor and remind voters he is the one in the oval office right now. i also expect based on my conversations mr. biden will continue to stress that unlike former president trump he doesn't take aim at the justice department in fact, he was asked by my colleague peter alexander about that earlier today. >> reporter: mr. president what do you say to americans to convince them they should trust the independence and fairness of the justice department when your predecessor donald trump repeatedly attacks it? >> because you notice i have never once not one single time suggested to the justice depa

but kristen, weigh in on the politics here. the clock is ticking. you know, these issues, comparisons between other -- what may sound like similar cases. how is all of that playing? >> well, i think one of the big unknowns, lester, that we're all waiting to see is will there be more titles. he's obviously under investigation in georgia. could there be an indictment there. the special counsel is still investigating the events surrounding january 6th. there could be an accumulation factor if there are more indictments, so that's one thing i think that his political rivals are watching for. i want to go back for a moment if i could to the current commander in chief to president biden. this is a very deliberate strategy not to weigh in on these indictments on these legal challenges of former president trump. his calculation is not only to draw a sharp distinction with the former president to say, look, the doj is separate, yes, i'm also under investigation for my handling of classified documents, but i'm not going to weigh in on what they are doing, but
