kristen: thank you very much. i'm kristen mcdonald rivet and i wanted to thank you for being here and who came out tonight and thank you for svsu for consistently hosting these forums and for our moderators and mr. junge, thank for you being here tonight. i grew up in a working class family, an agricultural town of about 4,000 people and my dad was a construction worker. and make i was really taught is that how hard work should equal opportunity. we always knew if the sun was up, dad was at work. and what that meant was we owned a home, dad built it, but a home and not a palace and we were able to go on vacation once in a while because his hard work equaled the middle class life. i will never forget my first job as a biscuitmaker in mcdonald's when i was in high school and had the 5:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. shift and it was hard work and i earned my own money and i still make a mean biscuit but i liked going to work every day and create something. my sisters and i were the first in a generation to go to college. now h

secure world for themselves, they focused on their next big accomplishment, ♪ a b c d ♪ e f g - [kristen. - baby boomers really were the first like, therapy generation. they're a real self-improvement generation. and so all of that got folded into baby boomer parenting of the millennials that they raised. - when they were young, they put young-ness on the map. they demanded that teenagers and young adults have a voice, and be heard. they took on the systems, whether it was the vietnam war, or women's rights, or civil rights, they demanded to be heard. they questioned authority. and then very ironically, they became the people who undermined the voice of their own children. they were the first helicopter parents. they were the first to question authority on behalf of their kids, rendering their kids helpless at advocating for themselves. - boomer parents were told by pretty much everyone that they needed to promote self-esteem in their children, and they took that to heart. they came up with the idea of, you know, when our kids play soccer, everybody should get a trophy, whether they win

." - [kristen] before facebook was overrun by baby boomers and karens, it was an invitation-only collegiate social network created for millennials by a millennial. - now we're up to 575 or so schools expanding at about 65 schools a week. - mark zuckerberg had launched facebook at harvard. it was an extremely exclusive website. it took a few years for it to explode and become this kind of leviathan that it is today. what was really interesting to me was that that was the first time that i felt the need to curate my image. - facebook listed how many friends you had, which was an automatic sort of power move or hierarchy of like, "oh, this person has 400 friends. they're so popular and cool," or you only have 10 friends or whatever. so it's like quantifying how we view each other and making it a competition led to a lot of problems 'cause you're not actually yourself. you're this weird performance of yourself. - you had this part of your life that was computer time and that was distinct from your real-life time, but all of a sudden those lines started to blur. - [kristen] pretty much every mil

absolutely, kristen. one thing we have noticed in the last couple of days, this is not all of the polls that are out there now, but we have seen a number. four in the last four days that have shown very small, but in the context of this close race potentially meaningful movement in trump's direction. i don't want to overstate it, but at the same time it's hard to ignore these four. the cnbc poll came out the other day has trump ahead by two. "the wall street journal" poll, trump ahead by three. these are national numbers. sinna and "the new york times," a tied race. cnn, a tied race. the significance here is broader movement. again, we are seeing it in trump's direction. to put this in some context here is the current national polling average and let me pull it up on the screen. harris continues to lead nationally, i want to stress that, but we've been tracking this every week on the air here. a couple of weeks ago this number was at three for kamala harris. her lead in the poll is down to 1.2 because of

- [kristen] and we were forever changed by it. many of us learned lessons we should have never had to learn about living with disabilities, about trauma, about how we see the world, and how the rest of the world sees us. - i had a license to drive a tank before i had a license to drive a car. at the time i remember just thinking terrorists are like the enemy. i didn't think of a human being. i didn't realize until i witnessed my first death and it was somebody that was on the iraq side that they were human beings and i was fighting a war that wasn't something that i believed in. - i think many of my generation, we look back at so-called greatest generation, we see world war ii. we knew the nazis are evil and we knew they needed to be fought because there was no peaceful way of stopping them. many people who joined the military want to fight that war. that so-called, good and just war. (guns fire) this is not a just war. (somber music) when i was diagnosed with h-i-v, i didn't know who i would be. but here i am... being me. keep be

steve, boy, this is a big one. >> kristen, numbers say it. tie game weeks before the election and it's that shift. the last poll taken in the wake of that september debate. harris had opened up that advantage over trump, gone in our new poll. what goes into that? what's behind that? i think this one is revealing. this is the basic perception voters have of these candidates? is it positive? is it negative? these are not great numbers for either one. trump, 43% positive, 51% negative, eight points underwater, you might say. >> look at harris, exact same positive score almost in the exact same place. and this is it. the last time we polled that question after the debate, harris had made up ground in this area. look, she had a positive rating, 48 to 45 so that advantage has all in the last few weeks washed away for her. then there are some issues and characteristics here. these are advantages in red that you see for trump now versus september on the immigration and the border. we asked voters who would be better on this. in september trump had a

i want to go to kristen first also, kristen, in addition to what trump has been saying, and i was just kind of those are just a few things. there are more we're going to talk about before he even took the stage. the rhetoric that we were hearing coming out of madison square garden that some of the speakers called vice president harris, the anti-christ, the devil. they railed against effing illegals they said puerto rico, which of course is a us territory, was a floating island of garbage. so this is what we've been hearing out of madison square garden tonight. kristen, what have you been tracking everything. >> just getting picked to keep in mind, here's somebody who's attended dozens upon dozens of these rallies, even for me, listening to this rudder it was incredibly dark and hateful. there was a lot of nativist rhetoric talking about how america is for americans only we heard someone saying that america first met american citizens with getting jobs first miss usa. we heard those lines about messing illegals we've heard someone saying that hillary clinton was a sick name calling to k

(crowd cheers) - [kristen] the next eight years would show the country as divided as ever. - the teaas in some sense a precursor to the kind of populism that you see on the right, now. - $1.47 trillion in additional spending this year by the obama administration is too much. - [abe] it was in response to particular democratic policies. - don't ask, don't tell works. - the bailouts, the stimulus packages, the revamping of the american healthcare system. - people know there's no fix for obamacare. we need to repeal this law and start over. - and there were people that said, "wait a minute, i didn't sign on for this." - i remember like my friends voting for him and them being like, "he is gonna do the everything and i believe him and oh my god, this is different." and i was like, "he's a politician." - how is that hoping changing thing working out for you? - obviously, it's not everything i'd like, but you know, change takes time. - i voted for barack of course, mostly because it was like, "what are we doing? what are we gonna keep doing wars?" and of course we did keep doing wars. - pr

kristen, larry. thank you sandhya. a new report released today says despite huge increases in police funding, departments are solving fewer crimes than ever. >> yeah, the real crisis. the report suggests, is the lack of police efficiency. abc seven news reporter anser hassan with more. >> california's crime debate has been completely misguided. we've been looking at the wrong things. >> doctor mike mills is a senior research fellow at the san francisco based center for juvenile and criminal justice. its new report finds california law enforcement are solving fewer crimes over the past three decades, despite increased funding. >> back in 1990, the average officer on the street in california made 30 arrests per year on average. today, it's down to about ten arrests. >> that's a 69% decrease, according to the report. while there's been a 408% increase in law enforcement funding relative to arrests, the report also finds that from 1990 to 2023, violent crimes dropped by 45%. with more money and resources, maile argues arre

kristen, i want you to stand by. we do have priscilla alvarez, who is joining us by phone and priscilla has been with vice president kamala harris all day and philadelphia and pennsylvania per ciliary, there i am. hi, jessica >> i just want to get your sense from what you're hearing from the harris campaign as this is unfolding, because clearly they are watching this to see what happens in and harris will say, often, i invite you to watch donald trump's rallies and see what he says and we have is chris just describe a rally that has his rhetoric in this dark, dark rhetoric that we hear. but it is on steroids. so what is the harris campaign seeing and what are they taking away from this? >> well and it's not only that the vice president has told people to watch the former president's rallies to see what he's about. but rather, i have been to a rally of hers rather recently where she played clips of the former president talking about, for example, his enemy from within, comments she has invited them in her own rallies

kristen. larry, don't worry, we're going to change it up to make it feel like halloween and november as we follow with some cooler weather. >> look at this lovely view from our exploratorium camera right now. seeing a lot of sun. there are a few passing clouds out there. earlier we had a lot more high cloud cover. looking at live doppler seven, all is quiet. here's a look at those clouds that came through earlier in the day. now we're basically watching kind of a complex of systems. a low in the gulf of alaska dropping down. we have another little low just off the pacific northwest coast. the combination of the two are going to bring us an opportunity for some wet weather on sunday. now, kristie, is falling apart. hurricane. it was a category five yesterday at one point. it's going to continue to weaken. but they are looking at some large swells and rip current risks along the baja coastline. for us. we're just going to see leftover clouds out of this, especially the second half of your weeken

kristen, what do you make? >> i'll be elon spending these huge amounts of money to help trump get elected. and will it make a difference? >> so the thing that's getting all the headlines are these like publishers, clearing house, gameshow, checks. he's giving out. but that's not in my view. the thing that's really going to make a potential difference, it's that donald trump's campaign has seemed as though they have basically outsourced their ground game. two groups like elon musk's group and that's a real gamble. now, ever since the super pac era, official campaigns have looked for things they can offload two groups that can take unlimited amounts of money. and so this is now a presidential campaign saying, hey, the whole effort to get our vote voters out. we're going to have somebody like elon musk in charge. i think that is a huge gamble. >> meanwhile, to kara's point, the wall street journal is reporting about moss secret conversations. the journal says, musk has been in regular contact with russian presiden

i also just want to drill down on something that kristen was talking about. just the fact that important and tight house seats, house races that are happening in new york state that really matter when you're, when you're, when the republicans are trying to hang on to the house and yet none of these people are going to be on stage with trump. and it seems like that tells us a lot yeah i'm a little surprised that at least one of them you know, out on long island might not not might not be there in a district that trump won. but the fact is that those districts in new york, like the districts in california that are also going to be critical in determining the outcome of the house are being fought almost entirely in districts that voted for biden four years ago. and so republicans are trying to surmount the underlying lean. it's possible trump might run better in some of them than he did four years ago, but still, the control of the house is largely being decided in the roughly 17 districts. i think it is that republicans hold that voted for biden in 2020 you don

i think kristen's answer was great. the other thing i will say is for our political clients, we're not polling right now, right? we're done because our job for our political clients is to tell them the contours of the election. exactly as kristin said, how do we, how do we convince voters to vote for our candidate? what are the most effective messages? what do we have to think about? and, and then, and they're going, so the public polls you're seeing now, they're super interesting and they're important, but they're not actionable. and that's the difference between what we do for our political clients and what you're seeing there at the end of the day. and it's one question versus in a lot of these polls, i would encourage you to look at everything else in the poll. and that tells you a lot more about what's going on here when you see the 48 to 48 result in someone's last poll versus, well, the trend lines here on harris' ratings, she's up a couple of points. trump's down a couple on the internals on who's going to bring

steve, break it down for us. >> kristen, let's start big picture nationally. we've been tracking this week it week, the kamala harris in the average with donald trump and donald trump lost the popular vote in each of the last two times he ran for president and one of those times in 2016 he was still able to win through the electoral college and let's take a closer look at the state, and the seven battle ground states. you're looking at the poll averages in here and it's very close everywhere. obama coming in there and from trump's standpoint in terms of an efficient path to 270 electoral votes it will look something like this. if trump gets georgia where he leads in the point average by a point and a half. if he gets north carolina where he's literally tied in the polls roo ut now and where trump won in 2020 and the only one of the battleground states trump carried four years ago. then all would be pennsylvania where harris does have a small lead in the averages now, but trump getting those three would get him to 270. that's what's important for him and democr

chad: a question for senator kristen mcdonald rivet. last year in the state senate you voted for more than $150 million in tax dollars to subsidize a battery plant. that plant is linked to goshen inc, a parent company based in china. what is the role of tax dollars for business incentives for foreign businesses in michigan? >> thank you for that question. every dollar, every tax dollar that is used for economic development has got to be properly screened by the federal government before it is even considered in michigan. let me say this, that investment was $1.4 billion investment of an area in this state that desperately needs jobs. what i can tell you is thatthere was-- has been a lot of political trauma around it and what i will never do is put politics in front of people's jobs. we have to absolutely address the unfair playing field with china. they do not play by the rules and we need to be ensuring that our national security is protected in those investments. that in particular -- that particular investment had absolute screening

kristen welker is moderator of "meet the press." kristen, good morning. it's great to see you. we see the campaigns pulling out all the stops. we see former first lady michelle obama, barack obama, beyonce. we saw former president trump going on the joe rogan podcast to reach a big audience there. we're into closing argument mode, but so much of the vote is in already thanks to record-setting early voting across the country. so how does that impact what we see down the stretch here? >> well, willie, we've seen some record turnout in some of these states with early voting. north carolina and georgia both campaigns real little focused on their ground game. vice president kamala harris will be in philadelphia going neighborhood to neighborhood trying to turn out the vote. trump focused on his ground game as well. the real, i think, challenge for both campaigns right now is trying to win over those persuadable voters. according to our latest cnbc poll, that's about 18% of voters, a small sliver of the electorate. steve kornacki will be here to help us break down some of the latest

kristen, tell us more about the campaign's big final push there. >> yeah. do expect him to be back again next week. i mean, one thing to keep in mind is the fact that north carolina was always going to be a critical battleground state. it delivered donald trump his narrowest victory in 2020. but one thing that has changed as the kamala harris ascension to them the top of the ticket window, biden was at the top of the ticket, they believed that it was in the bag that they had won north carolina and they didn't need to do quite as much campaigning here. now, polling recent polling shows that while donald trump does have an edge, it does seem as though the democratic ticket has more energy, enthusiasm, and support in north carolina than it previously. he actually did when joe biden was at the top of the ticket. so you're seeing him here today, you're seeing him yesterday. one going over the rules of early voting. early voting has started in this state and trying to drive these voters these supporters who are showing up at these events to the polls now getting
