joining us now, highland park resident kristen carlson.the way to the parade when she heard the gunshots ring out. thank you so much for taking the time to be with us. can you tell us what you saw and what you heard? >> i was on my way to the parade route, and i was near -- i was near st. john's. that was the starting point of the parade. the parade was already under way. the shooter was on central, and so i did not see the shooter. i just saw people running and screaming, "there's a shooter, run, run." and i heard sirens. i guess in hindsight, i heard the shots. i didn't know they were shots. i just didn't know they were shots. didn't even occur to me. and then even when people started running, i didn't get it. but then you saw the terror on their faces, and i just saw a sea of people coming at me, running. >> the terror in their faces. that says so much. in addition to that moment, there is now what you have been experiencing for the past few hours, which is the sheltering in place. can you talk to us about what that experience has been

i want to thank kristen carlson who was with us there. she is sheltering at her mom's place, at her family's house in highland park. she had come in from a different area outside chicago for this parade. as you heard kristen describe, had run with dozens of other people, leaving this parade route. she took maybe 12 people back to this back yard to a place that seemed safer, she watched little kids looking to figure out how to get with their parents, get somewhere to be away from the chaos unfolding on this main drag in highland park where this suspected shooter is still on the run, still on the loose. took up position on a rooftop and began firing down below, six dead, 24 people seriously hurt in the hospital. we're going to take a quick break but we'll bring you updates on the other side. . >>> we are back with breaking news. police are looking for a white man around 18 to 20 years of age. he's smaller, small build. left behind one weapon, a rifle. the person is considered armed and dangerous. the fbi is helping with the investigation, c
