nbc's kristen dahlgren has our report. >> reporter: it is one of the country's most storied teams. but the story now surrounding penn state football may be a much darker tale. pf i'm jerry sandusky. former defensive coordinator jerry sandusky on the nittany lions sigh lines for decades was in court today accused of sexually abusing eight boys. the charges involve children he met through the second mile, a children's charity he started. nbc profiled the coach in his work with kids back in 1987. >> they're not supposed to succeed. they succeed here. >> reporter: a grand jury report details the allegations, including those of a graduate assistant who claims he saw sandusky having sex with a young boy inside penn state's football building. george curley and gary schultz are charged with lying about what they knew. according to the grand jury, schultz testified that the allegations were not that serious and that he and curley had no indication that a crime had occurred. and, when asked whether the graduate assistant had reported sexual conduct of any kind by sandusky, curley answered no

nbc's kristen dahlgren has the latest developments. >> reporter: penn state football always had a quarterback issy clean reputation, led by college football's winningest coach, joe paterno. on campus today, the talk was of scandal. >> it defeats the program. we pride ourselves on being a clean program. >> reporter: former defensive coordinator jerry sandusky was rained this weekend on charges of sexually abusing eight boys as young as 10 years old between 1994 and 2009. the state attorney general called sandusky a sexual predator, who used his position within the university and community to repeatedly prey on young boys. meantime, the school's athletic director tim curley and gary schultz were charged with lying about what they knew. in the statement, the university's president said tim curley and gary schultz have my unconditional support and i have complete confidence in how they handled the allegations against sandusky. though he retired in 1999, sandusky used the university's facilities. but this weekend penn state moved to bar him from campus. while today jeffrey piccola called on the bo

first, let's get the latest from the courthouse with msnbc news correspondent kristen dahlgren. kristen, thanks for coming on the show. >> reporter: hey, there, al. it's 2 1/2 years since michael jackson's death since you spoke at his funeral. and today we finally did hear the verdict in association with his death. dr. conrad murray, found guilty of involuntary manslaughter. want to play for you that moment inside the courtroom. >> we, the jury in the above entitled action, find the defendant, conrad robert murray, guilty at of the crime of involuntary manslaughter, in violation of penal code section 192, subsection b, alleged victim, michael joseph jackson. >> reporter: we're told that that scream there inside the courtroom was from michael's sister, la toya. during the verdict, conrad murray sat pretty quietly, showed little emotion as the jury was polled. he did look at them. he was then handcuffed and remanded immediately into custody. his sentencing will be on november 29th. he could face up to four years in prison, as well as the loss of his medical license and up to $10,00

we start with nbc's kristen dahlgren, who has the greatest sense of what is going on inside and outsideat courtroom. hi, kristen. >> reporter: hi, dylan. about of five minutes ago, our producer said there is still no sign of dr. conrad murray here. so the murray camp still has not arrived and that verdict is going to be read in about five minutes from now. so he's expected to arrive here any moment. meantime, the crowd really just growing here outside of the courthouse. we were given two hours' notice between the time that the jury had reached its verdict and when it's being read, so that's giving a lot of people a chance to get down here. many of them michael jackson fans. they've got signs. they've been cheering when the family arrived, shouting things like "justice for michael," in a repeated chant. so many of them eager, as we all are, to hear what the jury has decided. the the jury deliberated over two days. they began on friday, deliberated for about seven or eight hours on friday. and then there was another hour or so this morning. and that's when they gave that three-buzz signal

we'll be watching and we'll keep you updated. >> kristen dahlgren, thanks.hn, the defense attorney in this brought up another interesting argument in court in defense of his client. take a listen to this. >> somebody's got to just say it. if it were anybody else than michael jackson, anybody else would this doctor be here today? >> do you really buy that? >> i do. to see a doctor prosecuted criminally is rare. it's the exception, not the rule. i think the prosecution, when they keep emphasizing michael jackson and his three children, they are emphasizing this was someone special, kwan joe blow middle class person that died. and i don't buy that part of it. >> do you think, though, if it were, say, an anonymous rich person who decided to hire a doctor and go with this type of main flans for sleep at home, you don't think that doctor would be brought in? >> i don't think so. you hear of limbs being lost, a sponge being enclosed in a patient, anesthesiologists walking away and patients dies. it happens. jurors may see this as a medical malpractice case. >> john

kristen dahlgren is live at the courthouse. good afternoon.hat kind of instructions is the judge giving? >> reporter: what we've been looking at i judge pastor reading 26 pages of instruction to the jury, essentially what they can and can't consider in the case, how they handle things like objections and anything stricken from the record, they can't consider that when making their decision. we then expect to hear the closing arguments and the prosecution goes first. they will try to make their case that dr. conrad murray was a careless and greedy physician who gave michael jackson propofol. that powerful sedative outside a hospital setting without the proper emergency equipment and left the room for 45 minutes to make phone calls. the defense gets its say. they'll try to argue that michael jackson was an addict who took the fatal dose himself. the prosecution gets one last shot, the final say. expect them to argue that whatever happened inside that room dr. murray should have had control of that sedative at all times. the judge hasn't set any

kristen dahlgren is outside the courthouse. good morning.ck with the verdict as early as today, or they could take longer to deliberate. this is a seven-man, five-woman jury, they'll get the case this morning, go into the jury room and begin their deliberations. yesterday the judge read 26 pages of jury instructions, what they can and can't consider in this case, and there is a lot for them to consider. more than 330 pieces of evidence 49 witnesses, yesterday they heard the spirited closing arguments, saying that prince, paris and blanket were left without a father because of the actions of dr. conrad murray, he said that he was essentially experimenting on michael jackson. the defense, of course, arguing that it was michael jackson that took that final fatal dose. they have to find that he was substantially responsible for michael jackson's death. we'll all by waiting, we'll get a two-hour notice, so a lot of people are standing by. michael jackson's family has been in court every single day. they are expected back when the verdict is final

kristen dahlgren is outside the court house in los angeles for us. t are jurors going to hear today? >> reporter: good morning, chris. well, both sides really making their final pitch to jurors. the prosecution arguing that dr. murray was a careless and greedy doctor who gave michael jackson that powerful sedative, propofol, without the proper safety equipment and then left the room. the defense arguing that michael jackson was a drug addict who gave himself the fatal dose. expect the prosecution to say that dr. murray should have been in control of that sedative at all times. now, here's the timing on this. the judge says he expects both sides to take about three hours for their closing arguments, so after six weeks of this, chris, the jury conceivably could get the case later today. back to you. >> kristen dahlgren, thank you for that update. >>> well, which american cities are the cleanest and maybe equally importantly, which are the dirtiest? we'll have the list when we go down to the wire coming up in 20. >>> free money is back. a new survey find

kristen dahlgren is in davis california. the question might be out there.he protesters doing anything to provoke this spraying? >> reporter: hey, richard. they were sitting peacefully on friday. they had their arms linked, but it was a passive protest. that's why it's drawn such outrage when people see that video that went viral over the weekend. there were calls all weekend for the chancellor of uc it to davis step down. thousands are expected out here today. it's expected today to be peaceful. the chancellor will address the crowd. you talked about the fallout we saw this morning, the campus police chief was placed on administrative leave over the weekend. the two officers involved in the incident were placed on leave. the chancellor here has ordered a task force to do an investigation. they have 30 days to come up with their findings, and then the president of the entire uc davis system said he's appalled by the images he's seeing. he's getting the chancellors from aum of the state's campuses to come together to talk about how police handle peaceful demo

kristen dahlgren is there. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. shoppers here got more than they bargained for overnight when the woman pepper sprayed other shoppers and including children. she didn't do it to defend herself from the crowds but to, quote, gain preferred access to parts of the store. the holiday shopping rush turned chaotic thursday night. police and firefighters called to this los angeles walmart where one shopper apparently had enough of the crowd. witnesses say customers were waiting in line for a sale on xboxes. they say a woman pulled out some pepper spray and took aim at the crowd. >> she wanted everybody to back off, so she came out with her pepper spray. >> reporter: officials called the woman's behavior competitive shopping. this video on youtube shows customers recovering just moments after the incident. speaking by phone, shopper carmen johnson said she waited in line behind the woman for two hours. >> it was crazy. i mean, we were trying to get games for xbox 360 when the crowd was just rushing in, and the shopper in fr
