that's where we find kristen dahlgren. kristen, good afternoon to you.it seems like to be a pretty good start, a positive one for hillary clinton. >> reporter: yes, so far at least in laramie county, frances. as you can see, laramie county doesn't mess around. a few hours ago this gym was packed with people, now nobody left here. more than 800 people came here today. most of them came with their minds already made up. there were only about five uncommitted people, voters here, and they were just given a few minutes to then make up their minds. there weren't enough of them to form their own little area, so they had to decide whether they would go for clinton or for sanders based on the speeches that they heard, based on what their neighbors had told them, and they then split up. at the end of the day, bernie sanders won the live vote here, but then when they counted the surrogate votes, people who voted absentee, the day at least in laramie county went to secretary clinton. so secretary clinton came away with 731 votes here in laramie county and senator s

nbc's kristen dahlgren in cheyenne. krist kristen, the surprise and the piece of the breaking news that you reported at the top of the hour for us was laramie county. even the clinton supporters surprised that they eked out a win there. they didn't expect this. . >> reporter: yes, because when you were here in the room for the caucus, there were clearly a lot more senator sanders supporters. he actually did win the live vote today in this room. but then when you count the surrogate ballots, what you might call absentee ballots in a primary, those surrogate ballots overwhelmingly went to secretary clinton. and so when you added it all up, secretary clinton came away with 731 votes here in laramie county, and senator sanders came away with 689 votes. so the day here in laramie county went to secretary clinton. but there are 22 other counties, so i want to bring in laurie brand who ran today's convention, to talk a little bit more about what we can expect from the rest of the state. >> i think you'll see various results aro

nbc's kristen dahlgren is in cheyenne, wyoming.ted about the outcome of this or is it a foregone conclusion? >> reporter: no, still excited, and they're actually still counting as we speak. you can see in the gym, it's a lot less crowded, a few people waiting to hear those results for this county, and then later on in another hour or two we should hear the statewide results. this was a packed gym while the caucus was going on. you asked what voters are saying, let's talk to some of them. tyler moore is a bernie supporter. show them how much of a bernie supporter you are. can you see this? we've got the bernie tattoo. a really dedicated voter. we've been talking about turnout and about 800 people turned out to this location, a little lower than some predicted. experts say that bernie does really well when there's high voter turnout. were you disappointed? >> it's never disappointing when you see this many people vote and be involved in the political system. but we were expecting a few more people to show up, a little more enthusiasm

kristen dahlgren is on the ground for us in cheyenne, wyoming.as a chance to pick up a few more delegates whachlt are you hearing from voters about his chances and how optimistic they are? >> reporter: there is a lot of excitement around the wyoming caucus. the republicans had theirs a few weeks ago today, all about the democrats. we are expecting people to begin lining up in the next hour to two hours. they had to move the venue of the caucus here in cheyenne to a smaller hotel here to this huge gymnasium. they are expecting so many people, possibly record turnout. you might be asking, why so much excitement. this is a red state. there is only about 19% of wyoming voters that are registered as democrats. it really is about momentum at this point. bernie sanders has been outspending secretary clinton here. he is the only candidate who has been to the state. she hasn't visited. president clinton was here campaigning for her. it really would mean if he wins here today another win that would head towards the new york primary. it really could be key

kristen dahlgren shows us some know. >> don't shop drunk. >> do it eyes wide open. you're going to spend a lot. >>> rob? >>> decision 2016 now, the democratic presidential candidates are starting to focus on their attention on new york ahead on the april 19th primary. as the battle for big apple bragging rights heats up, tempers are being tested on the campaign trail. on that. >> it's not often that the guarded carefully composed hillary clinton loses her cool. when she did that yesterday and called bernie sanders a liar, new yorkers noticed. >> it was trending like crazy on twitter and everything else. >> i can't imagine more stress than being on the road and running for president. >> it happens. people are human. it doesn't bother me. i think she's the only qualified candidate. >> the sanders' campaign called clinton's denials deeply cynical and disappointing. the environmental group green peace says its research found the clinton campaign accepted at least 4.5 million dollar in donations from the fossil fuel industry and its lobbyist. clinton insists the donation

let's begin with kristen dahlgren. she's about three and a half hours north of me in plattsburgh, new york. what are we expecting there this hour? >> reporter: a lot of people in plattsburgh. this is an area that doesn't get a lot of potential contenders. excitement building in the room as well, and there's been so much focus on new york city, but you really could make the argument that this congressional district is as important as any in new york state. as every state does, new york has a different way of doing its primary. so each congressional district, all 27 in the state, are awarded three delegates. the winner has to get over 50% in order to get all three of those delegates in any congressional district. and so that's really what we're going to be looking for in tuesday's primary. you know, we've talked so much about donald trump narrowing that gap to get to the 1237, and each congressional district and trying to get those three delegates from each really will make a difference. if he's under the 50%, and in som

nbc's kristen dahlgren is in plattsburgh, new york. donald trump is said to hold a rally there in the next hour. what about some of his supporters out there? are they talking about this delegate issue? >> hey, there, erica. i think it is resonating with voters across the country, which is what we're seeing here in plattsburgh. donald trump has been running on this anti-establishment campaign, and that really is what people here are latching onto today, complaining about the system, and especially about the people running the system. so this latest argument about the delegate system and about what happened in colorado really is resonating, at least with the people that we talked to here today who have been standing here now for over an hour waiting for donald trump to take the stage. >> kristen, one of the things that we've heard about at some of these rallies, the city of plattsburgh is about 20,000 people. the trump campaign says it's expecting 5,000 people to attend this rally. local news supports have said security is pretty tight.

nbc's kristen dahlgren joins me from cheyenne, wyoming. what kind of turnout are we expecting today and what would it mean for senator sanders at this point? >> reporter: they're expecting a big turnout. you can see here the volunteers have started showing up. they are getting ready for what could be big crowds. in this county, 680 surrogate ballots in. so it doesn't sound like a huge number, you know, compared to maybe a state like new york. this is the least populus state. but when you're looking at the population of potential democratic voters here in this state, they are expecting really about 20%, maybe. there's only about 19% of this state that are registered to vote democrat. and it's a very red state. and so for the democrats, there's a lot of excitement. a lot of people talking about it. because of what it could potentially mean to bernie sanders. and if he were to win, this would be his seventh straight state win. so it's really momentum that would put him going into new york with that momentum that he's been talking so much abou

what exactly it means for both of these candidates. >> all right my thanks to nbc's kristen dahlgren live in cheyenne there. let's move on to the republican side of the debate. nbc's jacob rascon is live in rochester, new york, where donald trump is expected to hold a rally later this afternoon. jacob, there's been, you know, some talk that it's been a light weekend for the campaign for donald trump himself, not a lot of public events at least. is this a sign of confidence, or do you think this is more a sign that he's tied down with some of the issues going on behind the scenes with trying to reorganize this campaign? >> so it's been an interesting week for donald trump, because he initially had some events in colorado and california. and that was going to be a big deal because he was going to go there into the colorado state convention and try to wrangle some delegates. but he canceled those events, and many thought, and even some of the campaign said, he really wants to focus on new york. but then he ended up not going out for any event for four days, except yesterday that private
