fisher, 9news now. >> thank you, kristen. a space shuttle piggy backed on a 747 and flying low over the national mall. that is something you don't see every day and something we may never see again. it's no surprise thousands of people crowded rooftops, balconies, and the mall itself trying to catch discovery's final flight. it was a thunderous salute to american ingenuity. at the same time, a bittersweet good-bye to the shuttle program. >> you can see it on tv, but to see it in reality, just to see it -- >> i should have brought some tissues to just be applying over the monument is just -- i don't have the words. >> so, discovery goes to join all those other museum pieces that help tell the story of america's expedition into the skies and then into space. so, what did that discovery final journey mean to you? was it a somber moment saying good-bye to our shuttle program or was it a great celebration marking the end of one era and the start of a new one? you might want to weigh in at mcginty's mail bag. the address is mailbag

kristin fisher was there when it touched down and joins us live with more and it's still there, kristen. >> reporter: it's still there. you can't miss this thing. believe it or not, the flyover was actually the easy part. now nasa is going to have to remove the shuttle from the 747 and do it using these huge cranes. there's a problem. right now the winds are just too high right now at dulles. so they'll have to wait a little while, but the hope is that they're going to have it all finished and ready by thursday's big welcome celebration and you know, it's pretty amazing. the shuttle can withstand temperatures up to 2,000 degrees. right now, it's still stuck on top of a 747 because of some high winds. after 39 missions in 27 years, discovery made her final victory lap as champion of the shuttle fleet. >> the smithsonian requested discovery by name because in our view, it's the champion of the shuttle fleet. >> it's flown more missions and traveled more miles than any other shuttle. it orbited the earth nearly 6,000 times. >> it has flown every kind of mission that it is designed to fly.

kristin fisher joins us live with more on that part of the story. kristen, as we were saying yet, demating was a new thing for us. >> it's slightly unusual term, but when you look at the shuttle, you can see why it's called that. now all day long, people, space nerds, nasa geeks, they have been coming up here where i am now, which is the roof of the parking garage right here at dulles airport. and they have been coming here hoping to catch a glimpse of this demating process, which was supposed to start today. but if we take a look all the way out on the tarmac, you can see shuttle discovery and her shuttle carrier aircraft, that 747 are still mated together one on top of the other and the problem, the delay has been this weather. high winds, rain, some lightning, that has all prevented the nasa crews from beginning this process. so now it's going to be taking place overnight starting at 8:00 p.m. until 8:00 tomorrow morning. then the shuttle will be towed over to the udvar-hazy center for that big welcome ceremony which will take place tomorrow morning at 1

fisher's parents were both nasa astronauts. her mother was part of discovery's crew in 1984, so kristen grew up with an up close and personal view of the program. she spoke to her mom about what this historic day means to her. >> what did you think when you saw it? >> that it was really big and very impressive. like i said, i have seen a lot of photographs and videos, but never stood practically underneath it as it went over. it was very impressive. >> truly the end of an era for you. is it bittersweet? how are you feeling? >> very bittersweet moment. i don't think any of us who were part of the shuttle program ever wanted to see it end. we know it's time to move to our next generation vehicle, because it has been flying for 30 years and that's about the usual lifetime of one of those programs. but there won't be anything in the near future as impressive as the space shuttle and discovery will have a special place in my heart. >> what does discovery mean to you? >> it was my home away from home. it kept me safe in space. just a wonderful, wonderful vehicle and i feel extremely privileged to have flown on board it, very proud to

kristin fisher spent the day in northern virginia searching for his ties to our area. what did you find, kristen? >> we found that he used to live in springfield. he was deep in debt. he was also dealing with the death of his brother who was killed in a car accident in virginia almost exactly one year ago today. but still, you know, he was dealing with a lot, no doubt, but nothing from what we found indicates he could be in capable of what he's accused of doing yesterday. >> i just hear and asking for help. again and again. >> this woman heard one of the victims beg for her life. police say the shooter had been a nursing student there, but he was expelled two months ago. he was upset the students teased him about his poor english. >> he was having behavioral problems and asked him not to leave. >> most of his family lives in oakland, but his brother still lives in fairfax county. so we came out to this apartment complex to try to talk to juan's brother. when we found him, he was very emotional, very distraught. he refused to talk on camera, but he did say he was deeply ashamed about what had hap
