kristin fisher was there when it touched down and joins us live with more and it's still there, kristen. >> reporter: it's still there. you can't miss this thing. believe it or not, the flyover was actually the easy part. now nasa is going to have to remove the shuttle from the 747 and do it using these huge cranes. there's a problem. right now the winds are just too high right now at dulles. so they'll have to wait a little while, but the hope is that they're going to have it all finished and ready by thursday's big welcome celebration and you know, it's pretty amazing. the shuttle can withstand temperatures up to 2,000 degrees. right now, it's still stuck on top of a 747 because of some high winds. after 39 missions in 27 years, discovery made her final victory lap as champion of the shuttle fleet. >> the smithsonian requested discovery by name because in our view, it's the champion of the shuttle fleet. >> it's flown more missions and traveled more miles than any other shuttle. it orbited the earth nearly 6,000 times. >> it has flown every kind of mission that it is designed to fly.

kristin fisher joins us live with more on that part of the story. kristen, as we were saying yet, demating was a new thing for us. >> it's slightly unusual term, but when you look at the shuttle, you can see why it's called that. now all day long, people, space nerds, nasa geeks, they have been coming up here where i am now, which is the roof of the parking garage right here at dulles airport. and they have been coming here hoping to catch a glimpse of this demating process, which was supposed to start today. but if we take a look all the way out on the tarmac, you can see shuttle discovery and her shuttle carrier aircraft, that 747 are still mated together one on top of the other and the problem, the delay has been this weather. high winds, rain, some lightning, that has all prevented the nasa crews from beginning this process. so now it's going to be taking place overnight starting at 8:00 p.m. until 8:00 tomorrow morning. then the shuttle will be towed over to the udvar-hazy center for that big welcome ceremony which will take place tomorrow morning at 1
