cnn's kristen fisher has more on the mission and what lies ahead. >> reporter: a textbook splashdownthe arien capsule in the pacific ocean this afternoon ending a successful artemis 1 mission and happened on such a historic day, of the 50th an verse of the apollo 17 mission. those astronauts landing on the moon. now nasa trying to do it again but all starts with this first uncrewed test flight. and so what we saw today was this orion spacecraft barrelling through the earth's atmosphere at about 25,000 miles per hour, hitting temperatures of about 5,000 degrees fahrenheit. such a critical test for this spacecraft because they can't replicate conditions like that here on earth. by all accounts it performed beautifully, but now they are going to have to conduct some final checks once they get this spacecraft out of the ocean and back to the kennedy space center. but for a program, a rocket, a spacecraft, a mission that has encountered so many delays, so many setbacks including getting hit by a hurricane, just five days before liftoff, today the moment that nasa has been hoping for and r

i'm kristen fisher. welcome to "cnn newsroom." this massive winter storm system is barrelling towards the east coast this hour, and this arctic chill is straining the power grids, closing airports from coast to coast, and causing deadly road conditions on one of the busiest travel days of the year. look at this video that we just got in from hamburg, new york. snowing and flooding on the coast at the same time. deep floodwaters across new england are a huge concern heading into the weekend as temperatures continue to drop, and nearby buffalo, officials have closed the airport and canceled all flights. you can see why. over 70 million americans are experiencing below freezing temperatures, and that includes the entire state of texas, and even if you are not freezing, it's bad news if you are waiting on any last-minute christmas gifts to arrive. amazon, the u.s. post office, the u.p.s., fedex, all warning that the storm has hit major shipping hubs nationwide, and deliveries will be delayed. so we have cnn's polo sandoval. last time

kristen fisher has the breaking details. so quite shocking to watch that video there.ng? how did this happen? >> reporter: well, bianna, leaks do happen in space, but that leak right there, that's a big one. i mean, even nasa is describing it as a fairly significant leak. it's -- they've just released what they believe to be the location of the leak. they say the suspected source is the external radiator cooling loop, and to kind of put this into perspective about where exactly this is. this spacecraft is a russian spacecraft that is attached to the international space station where nasa astronauts, european os astronauts and russian cosmonauts go. it's it launched two months ago, carrying two russians and an american on board. it serves as a lifeboat in case something goes wrong. it can ferry that three-person crew back to earth and it was supposed to do that in march, and now it springs a leak, a coolant leak, and it happened as two russian cosmonauts were preparing for that space walk, and they canceled that, and they're trying to fix it and if that spacecraft will

let me bring in kristen fisher, this was so fascinating, wasn't it?so much attention is given to the actual launch, but the splashdown just is as important and what spectacular images coming from the orion spacecraft as it made its re-entry, this final critical test for this mission was all about that all-important heat shield, will the capsule be able to withstand temperatures of 5,000 degrees fahrenheit, half as hot of the outer surface of the sun. so that really is this moment that just happened moments ago as orion made its way through re-entry through those very hot temperatures as it re-entried the earth's atmosphere, the final and most critical test for the orion capsule and spacecraft throughout this entire mission. 25.5 days long, lifting off from the kennedy space center back on november 16th, that brilliant night time launch and then we got to see those incredible images as it made those close passes around the moon. what you just saw there was actually a pretty -- it may have looked like some of those apollo entries from years past. but, f

cnn space and defense correspondent kristen fisher joins us with more detail.fits into the larger plan to return to the moon. >> reporter: well, ana, first of all, the orion spacecraft sending back truly spectacular images from this close flyby with the moon. look at the detail on those craters and a lot of this, these are a lot of the low res versions. we haven't seen the high resolution ones yet and there were other incredible images of once the spacecraft got to the other side of the moon and saw a crescent that was planet earth from all those miles away so now the orion spacecraft heading back to earth after what so far has been a very successful mission. there is that earthshot i was telling you about. that little smile in the bottom right of your screen. it's all of us. orion heading back to earth flashing down in the pacific ocean on sunday and, ana, the next big test here so far orion has done very well. the next big test is the testing of its heat shield. will that heat shield hold and someday protect astronauts who were on board on a future mission, w
