now, president trump making an unannounced appearance at a coronavirus briefing today and cnn's kristen holmes joins us from the white house. she was inside that briefing and we now know, kristen, the president has been tested. and everyone in that briefing room had their temperature checked before hand i assume you, too? >> reporter: that's right, ana. really, take a look at how different this is, night and day from what we saw yesterday. president trump in the rose garden shaking hands with all of those health officials, very proximity, touching the microphone. now you see extreme precautions being taken. all of the reporters having temperatures taken, all of the task force members having their temperature taken before they met with the president. i do want to note, one journalist was denied entry into the briefing after their temperature came back multiple times as too high under cdc guidelines. so they are taking this very seriously. again, a very big change from what we saw yesterday and on top of that the big seriousness is president trump, himself, getting tested. the timing was interes

cnn's kristen holmes is live near president trump's mar-a-lago resort in florida, where he spent the weekend. what's the tension here, kristen? >> reporter: good morning, alisyn. if you've been following the trump response to coronavirus at all, this boiling point between the white house and the health community as a whole has really seemed inevitable. we've seen these public health officials going out there, trying to get the realities of this virus across to the american people, only to be contradicted by the administration, by trump's allies, and by the president himself. look, we woke up this morning, we're calling this a pandemic. on friday, we heard two administration officials sailing that the virus was pretty shall contained so clearly here, mixed messaging. now there is another layer which is that privately white house officials are questioning decisions that were made by these health agencies early on when coronavirus first started spreading here in the u.s., particularly surrounding the cdc and that development of adequate testing. president trump has continued to say that

. >> kristen holmes is there with more. what are we expecting to hear? >> there's quite a bit on the agenda, even though we have the briefings every day, there still seem to be a lot of unanswered questions. the first thing i'm pointing to is the reports overnight in the washington post that say the u.s. intelligence committee was issuing classified warnings saying that coronavirus was a deadly, a danger, a global threat and this being at the same time president trump and lawmakers were downplaying the virus. so lots of questions around that as we still appear to be struggling here in the u.s. catching up with this virus. another big thing we're talking about here is the lack of personal protective equipment. we have been talking to doctors and nurses around the country struggling. they do not have access to masks or respirators. now the administration said they'll do anything and president trump on wednesday invoked the defense production act giving him wide breadth of power over the manufacturing industry which could leave him taking over companies and

kristen holmes was in the room at the white house briefing and just like you we learned the president had his temperature taken before he entered that room. >> that's right, erica. we heard it was not just president trump but his entire task force before they had a meeting. i want to note we watched one person get turned away from the briefing room before the task force came out after they saw the temperature, apparently the white house physician's office took the person's temperature multiple times and it was too high for the cdc guidelines so they escorted him away and he wasn't allowed to go to the briefing. i really want to note something here about president trump, saying that he got tested. there are a lot of questions about this. first question being, when exactly did he get tested? the reason i'm asking is because we're hearing from the white house doctor last night just before midnight issuing a memo saying that president trump and vice president pence did not need to get tested yet this morning president trump saying he got tested last night. another big question is vice pre

cnn's kristen holmes joins us now, and let's talk about this ship off the coast of california right nowcause president trump hasn't necessarily been on the same page as health officials. what does he want to see happen with these passengers? >> that's right, ana, certainly president trump would like it if they stayed on the ship off the coast of california. now, as you said, this is at odds not only with health officials but also with vice president pence. now before i get to president trump's reasoning on all of this, i want to kind of break down where we stand. this is a cruise ship, as you said, off the coast of california, that has about 3500 people on it. 46 of them were tested for coronavirus, and 21 of them came back positive. now vice president pence has said that he wants to bring the ship, he is working with government officials, government agencies, to bring them to a noncommercial port, so that everyone can get tested, and quarantined, if need be. now, president trump said he disagrees, he hopes they stay off the coast of california, and here's why. >> they would like to hav

kristen holmes has more on the trip. let's talk about his defense production act for the ventilators here because there's been a lot of back and forth on this defense production act. what are you hearing there this morning? >> reporter: after two weeks will he utilize the dp won't he, is he going to, has he already, it appears he's actually going to authorize the defense production act. now let's talk about how we got here? yesterday we heard an announcement from gm and a ventilator company announcing they would be working together to create ventilators en masse, using that technology at a facility in indiana, facility belonging to general motors. hours later president trump said he would use the defense production act to force gm to make the ventilators but it's unclear exactly what is going to change from this announcement they had already made. the company said they are still going making same amount and the timeline is still the same. we have to keep one thing in mind. this comes after a week of intense scrutiny by t

cnn kristen holmes is us with from the white house. good morning to you. what do you expect we'll hear this morning? >> reporter: expect a lot. despite the fact that there's been a daily briefing every day. there are still so many unanswered questions, particularly around how did the u.s. get here and what is the government doing to fix it. so overnight new reports in the "washington post" saying that u.s. intelligence officials were giving classified warnings as early as january and february, that this was a serious global threat. that the coronavirus was something that people should take seriously within the administration. we know this is at the exact same time that president trump and lawmakers were really down playing the virus and we've learned that inside the white house advisers were struggling to get it clear to president trump that this was something he needed to take seriously. so, obviously, questions about what when did this slow down the response of the united states in anyway. now the other big question here is the defense production act. yo

cnn's kristen holmes is there with the news that president trump fortunately has tested negative for coronavirus. what are you learning? >> reporter: well, that's right. you know, you mentioned this, that we had no idea president trump was taking the test. we'd asked multiple times if he would because of this extended contact with not only people who later tested positive for coronavirus but with lawmakers who also had extended contact with people who then later tested positive for coronavirus and were blown off by the president multiple times asking this question. he said he didn't need to, he didn't have any symptoms. now yesterday, he kind of waffled, he went back and said he would probably take the test. but there was still no real clear indication. well, today he said he took the test. this is the note that we just received, just a little bit ago from the white house doctor. it says essentially last night after an in-depth discussion with the president regarding covid-19 testing, he elected to proceed. this evening, i received confirmation that the test is negative. and you have
