i'm kristen sze. >> and i'm dan ashley live in santa rosa tonight in the fountain grove neighbor, whichas become an iconic symbol of the destruction left behind by these wildfires. we're dedicating most of our newscast tonight to this first anniversary of the wildfires in the north bay, the most destructive in state history. you're going to see a lot tonight that will remind you of what happened back then and what has happened since. late on sunday night last year, october 8th, small flames fanned by extreme winds merged into six massive fires. these fires wiped out 8900 homes, burning 200,000 acres, nearly 300 square miles, and it took the lives of 44 people. the fires burned in sonoma, napa, lake and mendocino counties with names that are now seared into our memories, the tubbs, nuns, atlas, pocket, redwood and sulfur fires. it would take 23 days before all of these fires were contained. now, let me show you a live look in santa rosa tonight at the mark west springs neighborhood. homes here are being rebuilt and right now neighbors are holding a sort of block party to gather together

"abc 7 news" anchor kristen sze joins us with a brand-new tool. kristen, this one is pretty interesting. >> yes, dion. there's a new ios app modelled after snapchat called snap crap. basically you snap a picture when you see something, you know, generally it is you-know-what, but in this case crinkled paper. gps tags the location and you use one of several pre-set messages. you hit send and the information is automatically uploaded to the city's own 311 reporting system. sf 311 is an app that allows users to post pictures, request cleaning and report other problems. in fact, it is more detailed. the san francisco engineer who created this says that simplicity is key. sean miller moved from vermont to south of market last year and got tired of seeing feces, needles and trash in his neighborhood. public works communication director rachel "golfing world" on-says they're aware of this app. >> people feel they need to get in touch with us with any kind of cleaning request we encourage them to do that. it is about a partnership in keeping san francisco

. >> that's correct, abc 7 anchor kristen sze is here with a sampling of how they respond to car burglaries>> we heard back from berkley, fremont and san francisco. their procedures are pretty similar with a few differences. here are the commonalities. for reporting a car burglary, all say call 911 if a break-this is in progress or just happened because the vandal could still be nearby. now, for reporting a burglary after some time has passed, all say report online, by phone or at the police station. san francisco requests you call 311. as for the police response, all say they will send an officer if the scene is fresh, but here is where the departments differ. once the case is cold -- that's one hour for berkley, and when it is no longer in progress for san francisco, they will send an officer only if they're not busy with other priority calls. fremont say it they will almost always still send an officer unless the victim does not want that or there's a severe staffing shortage. a quick glance at the number of car burglaries in those cities in first half of 2018 through june, berkley has 2
