the panel is with us, nbc news chief white house correspondent kristen welker.ditor of "national review" and former democratic senator from missouri, claire mccaskill. i want to show the stark differences we found in our poll between how republicans and democrats feel about where the country is headed. we asked them to put it in their own words. among republicans we heard things like wrong direction, concerns about personal freedoms, headed toward socialism and communism and simply liberal bankruptcy. among the phrases we heard from democrats were things like hopeful, exhilarated and repairing the massive damage. also negative phrases as well including downhill, frightened and headed for the toilet. you know, claire mccaskill, i've got to just show you how polarized we are as a country, i want to show you the ratings for jill biden among republicans and show you the comparisons of what the opposing party thought of first ladies coming into office. the republicans have this incredibly negative view of jill biden, 8-59. she's not been an overly political spouse. y

we'll get the latest now from "weekend today" co-anchor and chief white house correspondent kristen welkerwall today, but before leaving he spoke out for the first time in five days, urging his followers not to engage in violence and slamming those efforts to impeach him for a second time, accusing democrats of engaging in a witch hunt. now, as for democrats, they will deliver an ultimatum to vice president pence today, invoke the 25th amendment to remove the president from power by tomorrow, or they'll begin impeachment proceedings. the vice president met with president trump in the oval office monday evening, it's their first conversation since that attack on the capitol. sources familiar with pence's thinking tell nbc news he is not inclined to invoke the 25th amendment. so the question is what happens next. well, assuming pence does not act, the house will begin debate on an impeachment resolution on wednesday, heading toward a possible vote later that day where it is expected to pass. what's uncertain, when the house would deliver the article to the senate for a trial and how that vot

on that note, i'll bring in nbc news chief white house correspondent kristen welker. kristen, we understand as craig reported a moment ago that the marines stationed at their post outside the door of the west wing, presumably indicating the president is inside the oval. we know he has an isolated circle, increasingly isolated inner circle with him. my reporting from talking with sources in the last 18 hours or so is that the president is doing nothing to expand that inner circle. what are you hearing? >> reporter: that underscores everything we're hearing here, hallie, and an administration official confirmed that the president is, in fact, in the overall office at this hour. this could not be more starkly different, hallie, than when you and i covered the first impeachment of president trump. during that time, the west wing was filled with staffers, his legal advisers buzzing around the west wing, trying to respond to the press in real time. they were flooding the air waves. this is a ghost town. there are only a few staffers here in the west wing at work right now,

and now some democrats are calling for a criminal investigation of that very phone call nbc's kristen welker on cnbc's top story tonight. kristen, what is the impact? what impact has that call had? and could the president be in real legal trouble here? >> reporter: well, to the first part of your question, i think it has deepened the divides within the republican party that you laid out so well the fact that the president continues to push these false, baseless claims of widespread voter fraud, forcing members of his own party to fact check him. and what we are seeing within the republican party is real concern setting in for one, i think a number of his aides and allies thought that ultimately he would accept the election results instead, they're seeing the very opposite the fact that the president seems to be increasingly defiant in pushing these false claims. and then second of all, they're concerned about the political impact of course georgia has those two key senate runoff races tomorrow, shep, that are going to determine the balance of power in the senate. i have been talking to some

kristen welker, kasie hunt, and "washington post" senior washington correspondent phil rocker and chuck rosenberg, former senior fbi official and u.s. attorney. a busy day, kristen, on the senate, the cabinet, racial equity policies to be unveiled and briefed shortly by susan rice and jen psaki. >> reporter: absolutely right, andrea. as you pointed out at the top of the show, this does fit into one of president biden's key campaign promises to take action on racial equity, so he is going to sign a series of executive actions today that will deal with a range of different topics, everything from education to health care, housing. it will mandate that the department of housing and urban development seeks to have equitable and fair housing and it's also going to call for essentially a disavowal of xenophobia and racism, particularly for asian-americans in the wake of the covid-19 crisis. some of the language that was used by the former administration. so of course the question is what if any teeth does this have, andrea. that will be at the forefront. back to you because we see the swearin

kristen welker, first to you. the problems are piling up around the president. he seems very much in a bunker in the white house for these remaining six days. fewer allies to defend him publicly during this last week in office. what is your reporting telling you? >> reporter: well, i think you hit the nail on the head, andrea. this is a president who is increasingly isolated with few allies and advisers around him. and just to paint a picture of the stark difference between this second impeachment and the first, during the first impeachment, andrea, there were legal advisers, top aides buzzing all around the west wing, aides who were eager to flood the airwaves with talking points and to defend the president. they were putting a legal strategy and a legal team together. and in the second impeachment, yesterday could not have been more starkly different. there were very few advisers here behind the scenes in the west wing. it is not clear who will be on his legal team. among the names that have been floated, rudy giuliani, alan dershowitz. i spoke with alan earli

joining me now is nbc news white house correspondent kristen welker, former obama white house press secretary robert gibbs and former rnc chairman michael steele. the president went down to georgia last night and he was there to support loeffler and perdue but he spent a lot of time talking about how the election is rigged. what exactly is going on with him right now? how much pressure is he putting on individuals to try and take this election back for him? >> well, we are seeing him put a fair amount of pressure on those around him. in particular, his own vice president. he said from that podium in georgia overnight that he hopes the vice president comes through for us, referring to the proceedings tomorrow on capitol hill when congress votes on the electoral college results. here he has tweeted, the vice president has the power to reject fraudulently chosen electors. here's the fact-check there. the vice president does not have the power to do anything essentially beyond read the results tomorrow. so, he doesn't have the power to unilaterally change or overturn the election results. his rol
