i'm larry beil in for dan ashley. >> and i'm kristen zse. he convention. let's get right to laura then who is there live for us tonight. laura? >> reporter: hi, kristen. well there was a lot of concern about protests leading up to the event but it has been pretty quiet until now. escalating today, right outside the arena. at the entrance where most of the delegates come into the arena every day, this afternoon there was some tension, some violence and we found ourselves right in the middle of it. this is what happened after a protester tried to burn an american flag in the streets just outside of the rnc in cleveland. that prompted this response from police. some in heavy riot gear and used pepper spray and there were scuffles and some injuries and several arrests. the man who tried to burn the flag was arrested. a cleveland police spokesperson explained why. >> we have a law against open burning in the city of cleveland and that would be consideringed open burning. it is not about the flag, it is about open burping. >> we have $20 hats. >> r

. >> and i'm kristen zse. ama daetz has the day off. it began this morning in an outdoor mall in munich, germany. ray is live with the very latest on this breaking story. ray? >> reporter: the situation is still very fluid in munich at this hour. munich police now confirming at least nine people are dead and that number could change. they are also identifying this as some sort of terror and right now there is an active and intense manhunt for the suspects responsible. a deadly shooting at a place ingrained in the hearts of germans and people all over the world. shortly before 6:00 p.m. local time a police opened fire at the mall. the same site of the 1972 munich olympic massker. it was there during the early hours of september 5th that 11 israeli athletes were taken hostage and killed by the terror group known as black september. today a mcdonald's was quickly evacuated and people were fleeing the scene as special forces moved into position outside of the mall. it is unclear if the shooter acted alone. >> the most important thing we kno

i'm natasha zouves in for kristen zse. >> and i'm dan ashley. the fire has destroyed 20 homes.res. that is about the size of alameda, keep in mind. sergio quintana is live in the county tonight with the latest. >> reporter: this is a fire that is moving pretty quickly because it simply has a whole lot of dry fuel to consume. let me show you how close it is to the homes. up there on the hilltop you could see a little bit of smolders and it is burning higher but the fog just rolled in this afternoon. that fog is a blessing and a curse for firefighters. >> this is a fire that has expanded by thousands of acres in just a few days. >> the fire has grown from saturday around 3000 acres to the 14,987 that we're seeing now and it really is just hard to get to. >> reporter: the northernmost edge of the fire continues to inch toward an area called carmel highlands. many residents were evacuated this weekend but returned only to be put on notice that they may have to evacuate again. >> what we've heard is that the fire has come down and it has jumped the creek so it is now way back in thi
