kristy, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. i'm here right outside of the travis dairy just down the street from the westfield shopping center off travis boulevard. and this is where last night just before 8:00, a gentleman called police and said that there were three suspects who had attacked him and he called and said needed an ambulance. at that point, authorities did show up and they took the gentleman to the hospital to a trauma center. unfortunately, the gentleman died on the way to the trauma center. and police aren't releasing many details at this point about the suspects or the victim. but they are confirming that several items were stolen from the store including a cash register and a video recorder. and witnesses are saying that the car that they saw was either a tan or brown late model honda or similar. at this point no arrests have been made. there has been confirmation that no other individuals were injured or were in the store at the time. since this is just down the street from a busy intersection, police hope t

good morning, kristy. >> reporter: good morning.eah, right now, we are seeing some police officers come by to turn on their badges on the last day or their last week of work. they are just some of hundreds of city officials in san jose that are being laid off due to budget cuts. this is the tenth year in a row that san jose faced a budget deficit. last friday mayor reed and the city council approved a plan to control runaway pension costs and despite a 10% pay cut that was imposed on all city workers, the city still has had to lay off hundreds of employees. the cuts are 528 positions, 70 of which are police officers. the layoffs are to close the $115 million budget gap. the cuts to law enforcement are coming at a time when crime is high in san jose. this year alone we have already had 28 homicides in the city. people are concerned about how the law enforcement cuts will affect gang violence and theft. police are also getting cut at a time before the busy holiday weekend and before the really hot weeks of summer when crime has been k

kristy, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. the flames have been contained by this point where certainly earlier this morning around 1:30 the building was engulfed in flames as we look at video from earlier morning. the fire was throughout the entire building starting on the ground floor, continuing up to the second floor and even through the attic. and firefighters were up on the roof trying to contain the fire but eventually had to get off. it was too unsafe to stay up there. i talked to a fire captain earlier. he said that crews will continue to investigate the cause of the fire. they don't know the cause. but he did have this to say. >> we are investigating to try to find the cause of the fire. all the units will stay on scene and base what we are doing is removing all the burned items from the structure and ensuring that there is no more fire in the house. >> reporter: the good news is that the smoke detectors did go off so both families that live in the house on the first and second story were able to safely evacuate. the

kristy seifkin is in concord with what made this such a tricky fight. good morning to you, kristy. >>> reporter: good morning. i'm right here just behind discovery way. over my shoulder is where this fire broke out about 11:00 last night. a two-alarm fire and this is near the cal state hayward- contra costa center campus. looking at that video from last night you can see that the fire broke out in the dry vegetation, plenty of it in these hills. and wind was definitely a factor in this fire. the wind was kicking up, causing a fire to spread close to the homes. firefighters then called in additional units to fight the fire. the good news is that no one was injured in this fire. but, you know, wind once again an issue as it is for many wildfires during this time year. dispatchers had reported that when they were talking to their crews here in the field, they could hear the wind on their cell phones and on their radios. so once again, no evacuations were forced. some left on their own. no one was injured, no damage to structures. arson fires were sent out

and kristy seifkin is at the scene. she has the latest on this fire in oakland. >> reporter: yes, we're here at the scene of the fire on 23rd avenue in oakland. you can see the flames have been contained now but at around 1:30 this morning, flames did break out in this victorian home as we take a look at footage from earlier. you can see the building was entirely engulfed in flames. and it traveled actually through several stories of the building. this is a multiple family home. and we are able to talk to a fire chief earlier who said that while the fire has been contained, they are going to continue looking into the cause of the fire. >> currently we have the fire investigators on scene. and as we start to pull away all the burned materials, he is doing his job to investigate to try to find the cause of the fire and then currently all the units will stay on scene and basically, we are removing all the burned items from the structure and ensuring there's no more fire in the house. >> reporter: now, the good news is that both families were able to safely evacuate

good morning, kristy. >> reporter: good morning. here in pleasanton at mission plaza where at 5 a.m. it's already reading 70 degrees outside and only going to get warmer later on today. we hit the triple digits yesterday. a little cooler today but doesn't expect to adjust to the heat quite yet. we talked to the head of the emergency room at contra costa hospital yesterday who said it can take four to five days to adjust to the changes in temperature and it can take even longer for children. and since kids can be particularly sensitive to heat, we caught up with some kids who were at the concord tennis camp yesterday who were sweating through a very hot practice. so the children that we spoke to yesterday were certainly having a tough time with the heat. they were saying needed to drink extra water and the coach was taking time for them to rest off to the side but it's not just children who need to be worried about the heat. everyone should be aware of the signs of heat exhaustion. you can see if you're feeling tired, nauseous, any r

kristy seifkin is in redwood city. us, we're excited about this, how low could these prices go? >> reporter: , you know, the estimates are conservative at this point. we are looking at 10 to 20 is what most analysts have said 10 to 20 cents but the possibility of dropping even lower and this is pretty much unexpected news especially for a holiday weekend, people expecting gas prices through the ceiling. this will be much welcome so 10 to 20 cents a gallon is what we're looking at. the goal of this initiative is twofold. the first piece of it is clearly they are trying to help u.s. and european economies. and then additionally this is in response to opec who just two weeks ago refused to increase the supply of oil despite more of a demand for it. so many republicans have responded to this. these oil supplies are only supposed to be released during times of national crisis and they are concerned that it will put a dent in the backup supply. but analysts have said that the 60 million barrels that are going to be released

"today in the bay's" kristi smith is live with the story. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. what happened they just left the b.a.r.t. station coming from san francisco. they were walking down tennyson road right there underneath the b.a.r.t. tracks when two men held them up. one pulled a gun. the couple did what you might think is the right thing to do. they cooperated. they handed over a purse and a wallet. right after the man handed over his wallet, one of the men shot him, not once but several times. this happened 11:15 last night. the good news, the wife was not hurt in all this. the husband taken to the medical center in castro valley. we're told he's in stable condition. the two men ran off. the suspect description is rather vague. here is what we know. the race is unknown. they are in their late teens or early 20s. 5'7" to 5'9" inches tall wearing white t-shirts and dark pants. they apparently put a cloth over their faces. it was kind of hard to get a good look at them. the police are working to flesh out their descripti

today in the east bay's kristi smith is live in san francisco with that. good morning, christy. >> good morning to you. what a night for three people out fishing for crab near the cliff house in san francisco. their boat capsized sending them into water the coast guard tells me was 55 degrees at the time. this is a commercial fishing boat, 49 foot long boat. the coast guard got the call about 12:40 this morning. i spoke with them. they tell me the owner and two others were able to deploy a life raft and try and help themselves. the coast guard had them out of the water by about 1:05 this morning. they tell me there were 270 crab pots on board, 80 of them full of crab. somehow the weight on the boat shifted and that's what they think caused the boat to tip over. one man was taken to the hospital for evaluation for possible hypothermia. the other two we're told are recovering and doing just fine. i'm told the boat is out of arcadia. the boat is still in the water this morning partially submerged, and so is the life raft. the coast guard telling me they are k
