in northwest, kristin wright news4. >>> first at 4, there are calls now for increased training for d.c. firefighters after yet another smoke incident on metro. you may have seen us break this story online just before 1:00. smoke began to fill the dupont circle metro station. this video is of smoke sent to us by a viewer today. dozens of firefighters responded and found a brake on a metro car caught fire. no one was hurt. it come just three weeks after that smoke incident at l'enphant plaza killed a woman and sent 80 others to the hospital. those incidents are putting increased focus on how well firefighters are trained. a d.c. council hearing yesterday revealed only 100 d.c. firefighters were trained for a metro incident last year and more than half of all firefighters in the district have never received specialized training. d.c.'s fire chief says he has already ordered an increased training. coming up at 5:00 tonight, the fire union speaks with mark segraves about a tool they say would make that training more effective. >>> from the white house to the pentagon and beyond. u.s. offici

kristin wright has the details. >> they're on their way to the crash site which has become the deadliest in the history of the metro north railroad. here's what we know so far. the train was about 45 minutes into its trip from grand central station in new york city when it slammed into the suv. investigators say the suv was on the tracks because a crossing gate came down on it at a railroad crossing at valhalla in west chester county in new york. the driver got out of the car to look at the car and was about to drive away when the collision happened. the train pushed the jeep more than 800 feet down the tracks and both burst into flames. the driver of the suv was killed along with five people on the train. we are hearing from some train passengers tonight about the frantic effort to get out. >> somehow, some of the people in the head car got out. it seemed maybe they broke the window or something. and then a number of us were smelling the fumes from the car fuel and we said you know we need to get out. the fire was starting to spread back towards the second car. >> it's believed about 75

our kristin wright joins us now from d.c. superior court. kristin? >> repor well chief lanier took the stand for a second day today, and her testimony contradicted that of several officers last week who said look there was no clear-cut policy on celebrity escorts and that chief lanier approved many of them. superior court, police chief cathy lanier testified that mpd considers celebrity escorts on a case-by-case basis approves them only when public safety is a factor. today lanier testified for several hours in the whistle-blower case filed by a former commander of the department. captain hilton burton says he was demoted in retaliation after he contradicted chief lanier in testimony he gave to district counsel concerning use of police escorts for celebrities. in court today, chief lanier maintainedt burton was demoted for several other reasons, including the handling of a barricade situation in 2011 and pushback against a supervisor. in cross-examination, burton's attorney asked lanier whether she was just angry, that after charlie sheen tweeted abo

kristin wright reports now with possible motivation behind the threats. kristin? >> reporter: jim, the man accused of threatening to shoot and kill at the u.s. capitol served almost a decade in the army. two tours in iraq one in afghanistan. new tonight at 6:00 we are hearing what he said to investigators after he was arrested. a u.s. senate staff member reported to u.s. capitol police that her husband was sending her text messages threatening to come to the capitol to kill her and whoever got in his way. court documents reveal several violent texts allegedly sent by retired army veteran michael bogoslavski to his wife while she was at work at the capitol monday. gun in each hand someone is going to be grooeching for their family members today including my family. i promise you that. and i have a rifle as well. so it's on. i'm coming. and shooting everyone in my way. bogoslavski's wife reported the messages to u.s. capitol police the same day. the responding special agent reports hearing bogoslavski make further threats on speakerphone. i'm going to come up there

kristin? >> reporter: montgomery county firefighters here have responded to close to 2,000 calls over the past four days a big increase as a result of the cold, many of those calls are for broken pipes. take a look. water just coming down like a waterfall really right through the kitchen of this house. it was like rain. tonight the basement is completely flooded, 6 to 8 inches of water down there. firefighters had to trudge through it to shut off the water. now, many of our local fire departments have been taking a lot of these types of calls over the past few days. the montgomery county fire chief told us today he expects more problems with more snow and cold in the forecast. and keep in mind, one broken pipe is potentially a very dangerous situation. >> the other problem deals with water and electricity. when you get that much water in your house, you could cause a fire and could have an electrical short based upon the water and the electricity mixing, which is never good. that then, in turn

kristin wright has our story. >> reporter: these are the fist images we are seeing of anayah williams. the little girl from frederick didn't live to see her second birthday. prosecutors blame her parents, frankie williams charged with child abuse and murder. stephanie williams is accused of abuse and failing to get help for her daughter. after being removed from her parents' home at 4 months old, anayah had just been returned to them. she died three weeks later. that was last march. anayah's story sounded the alarm in annapolis. >> even though there had been obviously some extreme abuse in her home there were loopholes in the law that forced the social services to send her back even though they really didn't want to. >> reporter: delegate kathy f. sally and other lawmakers introduced anayah's law with a group of foster parents call anayah's advocates. >> reunification is not knauls the best interest of these children. it has to be case by case. >> reporter: the bill would add protections and give local departments of social services more power to stop reunification reunification. it w

news4's kristin wright joins us live from d.c. superior court with details of the chief's testimony today. kristin? >> reporter: chief lanier spent the entire day on the stand. at issue right now is whether lanier demoted a commander for his performance or because he blew the whistle. d.c. police chief cathy lanier back on the stand for a second day. today lanier testified for several hours in the whistle-blower case filed by a former commander of the department. captain hillard burton said he was demoted in retaliation after he contradicted chief lanier in testimony he gave to district counsel concerning the use of police escorts for celebrities. in court today chief lanier maintained that burton was demoted for several other reasons including the handling of a barricade situation in 2011 and pushback against a supervisor. in cross-examination, burton's attorney questioned lanier on an interdepartment memo written the day after actor charlie sheen tweeted about his escort. the memo asks for a police department policy on celebrity
