i'm kristin welker in washington filling in for andrea mitchell. rescue teams in nepal aren't giving up on finding survivors after the devastating earthquake saturday. the escape center of the earthquake was located 50 miles north west of the capital. those numbers are are expected to rise as rescuers reach remote villages outside the city. richard engle is there and filed this report earlier today. >> reporter: officials here tell us any death toll at this stage is an estimate. they're coming to terms with the scale of this disaster. the aftershocks are continuing. the entire citykathmandu. people try to keep their children fed clean, and away from buildings. the sent secenter of kathmandu is the most popular area. a nine story tower over 150 years old now just a stump. a temple compound that was older reduced to a pile. volunteers dig with their hands. they don't expect to find survivors, just bodies. police have found around 150 of them in this area. she used to come to this same spot. >> why are you here today? >> i used to come every day, sit

news4's kristin wright was there and she joins us live from the courthouse in rockville. kristin? >> reporter: well, nia parler waived her right to extradition. parler was not in the courtroom. she appeared on a monitor which is standard. she was taken into police custody in silver spring and that is why she was in montgomery county district court. she was holding a tissue at times to her face. parler faces charges of attempted murder, aggravated assault and kidnapping. police say the 41-year-old mother leave her 21-year-old quadriplegic son alone in the woods in a philadelphia park with only a blanket and a bible. the young man, who also has cerebral palsy and cannot talk, stayed out in the cold and rain for five days until a passerby found him on the ground. police say parler abandoned her son and then came to silver spring, maryland, to see cher boyfriend. we're told that young man is expected to recover fortunately. parler does have a criminal defense attorney in philadelphia. we are still waiting to hear from him this afternoon and no word at this point as to when parler will

white house correspondent kristin welker joins me now. you've been all of the story.d and bad for the secret service is. it looks at least this time it worked well. >> that's absolutely right. here's what is we know. suspect identified as 54-year-old gentlemen from california. he jumped over the south lawn fence that faces the washington monument. he was arrested almost immediately. he did have a suspicious pack package. he's going to be arraigned later today in d.c. in superior court. of course andrea as you alluded to, the broader issue is this comes on the heels of a number of security lapses and embarrassments last year. last year a man jumped over the fence with a knife in his pocket. two men drove through the lawn after a night of drinking. clancy has testified on capitol hill and vowed changes. at this point he's also said he's looking into getting a higher fence. that's something still about a year out andrea. the park's service is moving closer to installing steal spikes on top of the fence that currently exists in an attempt to at least start to move forward

kristin welker has more on that for us this morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. according to the "new york times" russian hackers swemt up far more information from the white house's unclassified servers during a cyber attack last october than original thought, even gaining access to the president's e-mails. these were unclassified e-mails according to the times. the hackers could have gained access to e-mails with diplomats and legislation. the white house told me they have no comment at this point. the hacking in october lead to a partial shut down of the white house's e-mail system. the hackers appeared to be kicked off the e-mail by mid october. this isn't the first time the president has been hacked. in the 2008 election hackers broke into then senator obama and senator mccain's e-mail systems. one official telling me hackers try to break into the computer systems here at the white house almost every day. and countering that threat is an ongoing and pressing challenge. >> thank you. >>> tensions are reaching a breaking point in baltimore with demonstrations
