let's get started with -- in washington with cnn kristin holmes. walk us through what are the headlines here. >> so we're looking at hundreds and hundreds of pages of documents which we're still coming through. but i'm able to confirm some information as we go through and try to process all of the numbers. the first thing that we could confirm, what trump paid in income tax while in office. as you said, little or no income tax. back in 2016 and 2017, he paid only $750. in 2018 and 2019 combined, about $1.1 million. and in 2020 he paid $0 in income tax. he was able to do this by claiming large losses that he carried forward year after year in order to offset or in some cases not pay at all that income tax. and you look at those losses, these were enormous business locks. talking about $105 million, $37 million and then $54 million. and when you look at that 2020 income tax of $0, some of this they believe will be called strategic accounting. that he was able to move this money around and pay less. but when it comes to 2020, paying $0 in income tax,

as kristin holmes reports, the former president has a lot at stake here. >> reporter: after a years' long legal battle the house ways and means committee will release trump's taxes on friday. here's what we are expecting to see. they'll return six years, 2014 to 2020. it will include irs audit materials. this is a big deal for a number of reasons. trump himself has built an entire brand on being a wealthy and, therefore, successful businessman and in that process he has done everything are in his power to protect that image. that meant shielding his finances for decades. that includes his net worth, who he did business with, how exactly he made his money and a big question now is what this pulling back of the curtain is going to reveal. will it have a political impact? one thing to remind you of here is that when trump ran for office when he was president, he became the first president in modern history not to release his tax returns. now we do have some information. there was an analysis done on these taxes from the joint committee on taxation. they talk about his income tax. 2017 h
