so kristin dahlgren there, look at her. she is blowing away, kristin. you're langing hanging on there looks like you're getting some guests. >> we are. we're expecting the eye wall to go right over us and we'll get the break in the center, but not before we get the worst of these winds, just a little bit of calm. i'll take you back here and show you what's going on here and we're obviously in a parking lot here. we've been behind a big concrete building trying to stay safe, but take a look at how many branches are down here and this is a protected area. this was our fallback plan. so we're not out on the beach or anything where they're getting the worst of it. so this is a powerful storm coming through. the roar as these winds come through is absolutely incredible, and then we're expecting it to get worse and worse through the next few minutes and maybe within the next 20 minutes or so, we could see a break in this and the eye wall and then that means it's ahead and the wind shifting and all of that water going out, that will get pushed back onshore and

that is where we find kristin dahlgren on sanibel island. >> we're in a neighborhood here. here is why. take a look and you can see the storm surge. the these houses are so low lying, so close to the water, that any type of storm surge could be steph stating here. the local city of sanibel is going door to door to make sure everyone gets a shift in the track. it is maybe silly, but these are elderly, they may not be watching tv. they maybe have dementia and don't realize the severity of this. they're knocking on every door to maybe sure everyone knows to get out today. they're making sure everything they can't bring with them are up higher in their home. a lot of last minute preps going on. a lot of people going to shet r shelters. people are finding all of the hotels are booked at this point. we heard from one family that stayed in a rest area in their car with their kids. >> lots of retirees down there in that area. thank you very much. >>> and get out now. that is what florida officials are saying. it is time to heed those evacuation orders and prepare themselves. so far

nbc's kristin dahlgren is looking into hazing in america. have you found, negative press having an impact at all? >> reporter: hey there, leon. we just heard about another potential hazing death at lsu. investigators are looking into that. there is at least one hazing death per year since 2010. so, still a big problem. the reason why nbc is trying to shed some light on it tonight. you talked about that survey monkey poll. 75% of people, though, support legislation that they're talking about now, the federal government would require universities to report hazing incidents as part of their crime reports every year. so, widespread report for that. 56% of people told us that they believe hazing can be eliminated. and tonight we'll meet a family that says they've been directly affected by this. their son was a student at penn state altuna. they say he joined a fraternity. went through hazing rituals that they later found out about on his phone after he committed suicide. they are now suing the university as well as the fraternity and several unive

let's bring in kristin dahlgren who is live in ft. myers, florida, where you should be in the 50 to 55 miles per hour range gusts right now. what is it feeling like. >> we're definitely getting the gusts through that can sort of move you off of your feet a little bit and you to brace, hunker down, and hold on to your hat. this is the worst that we have seen in ft. myers as we have gone through the last 20 minutes or so. just a tiny lull, but we keep getting gusts through. this is ft. myers beach, an area where many residents did evacuate. it is a mandatory evacuation area, but a lot of people we have seen that decided to ride out the storm here. it will get a little ugly as i come under this shelter here, but i want to show you what we're most afraid here. this is the gulf of mexico. the tide going out, it will start to come back in, and if that timing matches up with the storm passing here and getting those onshore winds, this could be disastrous here for the storm surge. hurricane donna came through just to the south of here on this

let's bring in nbc news correspondent kristen dahlgren. kristin you're just south of fort my myers. still in the reg walk us through where you are how the weissinger has changed in the last half hour or so. >> hey there, guys. we're out at fort myers beach. we're at a resort. closed down. but they do have the people who work here who are sheltering here with families. they have an interior stairwell ready for when things get really bad and that's where they're going as their safe place. it's u off the ground but here the storm surge is the issue. the gulf just right there. storm surge predicted to be catastrophic. as far as the conditions over the past bit here we are definitely feeling the outer bands now. high gusty winds the rain coming down. but this is nothing compared to what in area is going to get. we were out in it. we were coming over here. we still saw people out on the roads. a lot of police vehicles. but then also just some regular looking cars and suvs out there. there are people in the area who haven't evacuated. i was at a trailer park earlier today and spoke with a
