our kristin fisher is live at cape canaveral for this historic mission and kristin also happens to bethe daughter of two astronauts. we saw some little cute bundle being put in a little space suit earlier today. so tomorrow's launch is really sort of a family affair for you, kristin? >> reporter: absolutely, lesli. both of my parents wanted to be astronauts pretty much from the time that they were born. in fact, get this, my dad actually applied to nasa when he was just 12 years old. they sent him a kind rejection later. nearly 30 years later he flew on his last space flight. my mom was in the first class of women selected to be astronauts back in 1978 and she was in the running to be the first woman in space until she got pregnant with me. now at least i'm happy to say that she became the first mother in space so i didn't totally rob her of any of those titles. but absolutely. growing up in a household where both your parents are astronauts i watched every single shuttle launch growing up. they woke me up in the middle of the night to make sure he didn't -- make sure i didn't miss it

our kristin fisher is in florida this morning and we will be talking to her coming up at 6:18 this morning. >>> while you slept, a deadly shooting and standoff in michigan came to an end. the suspect -- the suspected killer took his own life. >> when it was over, seven people were dead including the suspect's daughter and another child. >> this all happened in grand rapids, michigan. police say the rampage began at one home and went to another. the suspect is 34-year-old rodrick dantzler. police say he killed his daughter and ex-girlfriend and phi others. officers hope to end things by taking dantzler into custody. >> at the moment that it occurred, as i said, he threatened people earlier. threatened to shoot. asked officers to shoot him. but at the same time the incident occurred, he was talking about coming out, giving himself up and obviously chose at the last moment to fire the gun and take his own life. >> right now, police still do not have a motive behind this crime. >>> new at 6:00 a.m., it looks like the feds are now getting involved in that cheating allegation in d.c. public scho

our kristin fisher is heading to the kennedy space center for this launch. it leads up to the final blastoff scheduled for 11:26 friday morning. when it is done with space travel, atlantis will be put on display at the kennedy space center in florida. here in our region, we'll be getting "discovery." the shuttle will go to the center near dulles airport. it took its final flight this past february and it is the first shuttle to be retired. nasa is making sure "discovery" is ready for museum life. >> we've taken care of her for all of these years. it will be hard for many people to realize we're no longer responsible for that. someone else has to do that for us. it will be a big change for some folks. >> nasa will make sure the shuttle is free of any dangerous chemicals or classified equipment. no timetable for when it will make its smithsonian debut. >> i'm going to be down there as well. >> kristin has a unique perspective, being the daughter of two astronauts. her mother and father. they flew in the shuttle. you're going back. >> i hope to see it. i tried
