kristen saloomey joins us live from the united nations where the palestinians formally handed in their application to the international criminal court. the request for membership has been made kristinwe were expecting. what happens next? >>> well typically there is a 60-day waiting period before a state can enjoy all of the privileges of membership but this case is anything but typical. a spokesperson for the secretary general released a statement saying that the u.n. is now considering the documents and the appropriate next steps. the palestinians have argued that the application be retroactive, that is any alleged crimes going back to the start of the court could go back to that period. the palestinians specifically would like to consider settlement activity as well as the most cent israeli incursion in gaza over the summer which resulted in about 2,000 civilians being killed. you have israel and the united states opposing this move. they are saying this is going to be counterproductive for negotiations that will still need to take place in order for two states to live side by side. but the palestinian ambassador to the united nations said that they owed it to the palestinians to
