kristy seifkin reports from treasure island with the new segment. eastern span. >> reporter: you could call it the last four pieces of the puzzle. we are getting the four last pieces of the span that motorist will drive on, this has been a big project people have been watching for months and months and as those pieces arrive, it's finally starting to settle in that this new bridge will be a reality soon. so those four pieces will be connected together and will construct that new deck that motorists will drive across and they comprise more than 5,000 tons of steel. so as you can imagine, caltrains is considering this delivery to be a pretty precious one. >> these elements of the bridge have been fabricated in china. we have been there for four years. >> reporter: once those sections of deck arrive all the elements that are needed to finish the bridge will be here in san francisco and in fact in the next few weeks crews will start lifting bridge cables and adding that to the construction project. if everything goes as planned and those sections get de

kristy siefkin joins us now from oakland... preparing >>> still no word of an arrest in the drive by shooting that killed a 3-year-old boy. kristy seifkin joins us with more. >> reporter: good morning. it was yesterday just after 1 p.m. that carlos navis' family was walking along international boulevard pushing the boy in a stroller. a couple of men were walking ahead of the family. then a car drove by and opened fire at those two men. a bullet then hit carlos in the neck. he was rushed to children's hospital in oakland, where he later died. now, police put some of their force on tactical alert after the shooting. and they also held over day watch units to patrol the area. the mayor's office has also asked for federal assistance in this case. this is also because of the increase in shootings in oakland because of the assistance request. it stems from an ongoing feud between two parties but they aren't saying whether or not this incident was gang-related. the two men targeted in the shooting are not yet identified. they sustaine

kristy seifkin joins us from san francisco airport and kristy, there is still a lot of anger over this. >> reporter: there definitely is still a lot of anger, grace. it was something that was kind of behind us for a month and a half. we hadn't heard about it and it's back in the news today. the african-american civil rights organization "colorofchange" has said that discrimination won't fly. this is a message that they are sending to u.s. airways. they have collected 40,000 signatures and are demanding that u.s. airways apologize to deshon marman. they plus the san francisco chapter of the naacp plus deshon marman's family will be here at the u.s. airways counter at sfo around 10 a.m. to deliver those signatures. so it was about june 15 that deshon marman was on a flight out of sfo going back to college in albuquerque and that's when u.s. airway officials asked him to pull up his sagging pants and according to his attorney, his hands were full at that time. he said let me get back to my seat. i'll pull up my pants then. then a fight ensued between the pilot and marman. he was removed f

good morning, kristy. >> reporter: good morning.ice were involved in a pretty lengthy pursuit last night after that driver fled san francisco eventually was detained in hayward and they believe that he may be the man responsible for hitting that 9- year-old boy about 9:30 last night. here's some images of the suspect being detained yesterday in hayward. you can see the front end of his car is pretty beat up and that's because he had actually hit several vehicles as he was fleeing the city. the police brought several witnesses to hayward and they say that the car a white toyota pickup truck matches the one that they saw involved in the hit-and-run. the accident happened last night when the boy was walking just ahead of his family and then was hit on a mission street crosswalk. >> a large white toyota pickup truck was proceeding northbound on new montgomery which is the wrong direction. the truck turned left westbound on mission street and struck the chilled who was apparently in the crosswalk. >> reporter: the driver didn't stop afte

kristy seifkin reports. >> reporter: good morning. we received initial reports that what started as a fun night of bowling turned into a violent activity as several men were stabbed at this bowling alley just over my shoulder, the serra bowling alley here in daly city. the gentlemen who were stabbed went to seton hospital a few blocks way. their injuries couldn't be treated there so several ambulances were sent and they were taken to the san francisco general hospital and were being treated there. now, police have not released details about the victims or what happened in the first place. they are still searching for who started the violence at the bowling alley. >> do we have any idea if the victims were inside playing or outside? where exactly did it happen? >> reporter: we are still wondering ourselves. we have asked police and hopefully they will speak to the media later this morning and give us more details. still not sure how the fight broke out. >> thank you, kristy seifkin in daly city. >>> one man is dead three others injured

good morning, kristy. >> reporter: good morning to you, frank. when we arrived here at serra bowl in daly city a couple of hours ago, there were several police cars on scene. they have just now left, taking down the crime scene tape. this is all after they received unconfirmed reports that several men were stabbed here overnight. police are not saying much, but we have received reports that four men were stabbed at the bowling alley and then walked over to seton hospital in daly city which is just a few blocks away from where we are now. multiple ambulances were called and the men were taken from seton to san francisco general hospital. according to serra bowl's website, the alley holds an event every week called monday madness. and this event runs in 1 a.m. that event includes discounted alcohol and there is a bar inside the bowling alley. so it begs the question of if alcohol may have been involved in the incident. now, an officer at the scene that i spoke to earlier said a detective was collecting evidence earlier trying to determine what happ

kristy seifkin has more. >> reporter: good morning to you, frank. it was just yesterday that the family held a rosary for 3-year- old carlos nava and as you mentioned, just a few hours at 11:00 today a funeral mass will be held for him a few blocks away from the memorial that's been set up here at 64th and international. it was just over a week ago that carlos was hit in the neck by a stray bullet during a drive-by shooting. two other men who were walking in front of carlos were also hit. but they survived. police do believe that this shooting was gang-related. it was this past friday that authorities arrested 22-year- old willie torrence of oakland in las vegas. they believe the man is responsible for driving the car the day of the shooting. he was out on parole for a prior weapon conviction and was spotted while out driving in las vegas. >> took a 3-year-old life. that was an angel. >> i just hope that they get prosecuted to the fullest behind what they did. >> they killed a 3-year-old. that changed the whole game. >> reporter: now, 26-year-old oa

kristy seifkin is in san francisco with more on how police saw the attack in progress and promptly made an arrest. good afternoon. >> reporter: good afternoon to you, frank. the front of city hall has beautiful detailing and last night someone targeted that in an act of vandalism breaking several doors, the glass out of the doors with his bare hands. crews were sweeping and vacuuming up glass this morning after an early-morning attack. around 4:30, city hall security spotted a man draping windows on the main polk street entrance. he used his bare hands and the handle of a knife to breakthrough glass panes on three doors and knock a glass pane out of a street line. >> it appears to be just one person acting on his own. this is a rare occurrence. i don't think it happened since the building re-opened 10 years ago. >> reporter: security responded immediately to the attack and found the perpetrator was heavily intoxicated. he didn't try to flee the scene and was taken to san francisco county jail. police have since released his identity, 34-year-old james weaver. he has been booked on eight

kristy seifkin joins us now from oakland with reaction from neighbors and police and kristy, even if you didn't know this family, can't help but emphasize. >> reporter: absolutely. a very, very sad story. locals have been coming by to the scene of the crime. just over my shoulder, use they are putting down stuffed animals, balloons and candles in memory of carlos, the 3-year- old who was shot. they have mixed emotions. they are sad by the boy being shot and they are angry that the violence in oakland just won't stop. about 24 hours ago, 3-year-old carlos was hit in the neck by a stray bullet on the sidewalk just outside of a pizza shop on 65th and international. witnesses say that carlos' family was pushing him in a toy car as they walked behind a couple of men who they didn't know. a car driving eastbound on international opened fire on those two men and carlos was hit in the neck. he later died at children's hospital. yesterday, opd issued a tactical alert in the area which we just found out has been called off, and the mayor's office reached out for federal assistance with the cri

good afternoon, kristy. >> reporter: good afternoon. the community has been rallying around the nava family for the past week since carlos was killed. and that outpouring of support continues today as people have attended the funeral here at saint bernard's church in oakland. friends and family carried him in in a small white casket many of them wearing t-shirts with his image and the phrase, rest in peace. dozens of friends, family and community members including police and fire officials attended the mass that started at 11 a.m. today. many carried flowers, balloons and stuffed animals in his memory. carlos' cousin led a motorcycle procession with several family members but all were too distraught to speak with the media today. the media was not allowed inside the church but the pastor, father flores, says the monsignor is presiding over the service today. he is well known within the community and is experienced in dealing with tragedies like this one. >> i'm just here for the baby. it's sad. it could have been anybody. it could have

kristy seifkin is in san francisco with what is being done to curb those copper thefts. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. copper theft is nothing new to the bay area. but it's out of hand this summer especially on school campuses. two schools in san francisco's sunset district were robbed in just the past week. and you mentioned that one school, the [ indiscernible ] which was robbed and had copper pipes stolen from a construction site on the campus four days in a row. police responded by putting additional patrols and plainclothes officers in the area. and they do have a description of the suspect. but they haven't released it yet since this is an ongoing investigation. the french school on ortega street is a few blocks away from the alice fong school and it was also hit. an employee saw two men on the roof of the building stealing copper rain gutters sunday night. vallejo schools have also been a popular target for crimes throughout the summer. 10 thefts happened in july alone costing the school district an estimated $100,000. >> talking about $5,000 just for th

okay, kristy seifkin live in oakland. kristy, thanks. >>> if you are a commuter, things are back to normal on bart this morning but the debate over free speech not over yet. protestors shut down four stations in san francisco in the middle of rush hour yesterday. the demonstration began at 5:00 at the civic center station. soon after police closed the place down and the rest of downtown stops, protestors approached them. police shut down the station after they say protestors briefly kept a train from departing. but the crowd just ended up moving down market street. anger comes after bart shut down cell phone service last week to stop a planned protest over the shooting of a homeless man. the group "anonymous" launched a hack attack over the weekend against the bart website in response. the protests have really frustrated commuters including a man in a wheelchair. >> i had to go far out of my way and i only have a certain amount of battery in this machine. and this brings me to a great disadvantage. take your protest acros

kristy seifkin is there with some good news about one of the families despite all the damage they sustained. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, grace. yeah, fire started just about 3:00 this morning on altura place which is off the edwards exit of 580. a woman awoke to the sound of crackling and flow in her win go because the in-law unit behind her property was in flames. the good news is she and her husband and their son were able to safely evacuate the building. but her brother, who lives in the in-law unit behind the house, at that time was unaccounted for. she tried to reach him on his cell phone but couldn't reach him. the good news is the fire was put out quickly in about 30 minutes. >> actually, the crew did an excellent job. it was fully involved with a lot of stuff inside, as well. they were able to get in and put it out. they did a great job. >> reporter: the fire did not spread very far. it only burned the eaves of the main house so that part of the house will be reparable. but the in-law unit is in a more dire state. the sister said her brother was a pack rat and yo

kristy seifkin live in san francisco, thank you. >>> breaking news now. a man is under arrest this morning suspected in the stabbing death of a woman in west san jose. the victim found dead in an albany drive apartment early this morning. officers found a 48-year-old man near the crime scene. he was arrested. investigators are now trying to determine a motive. >>> 6:03. the july jobs report came out about 30 minutes ago and it's not as bleak as expected. the nation's unmillennium rate fell to 9.1 -- unemployment rate fell to 9.1% last month a tenth of a point lower than june. the economy also added 117,000 jobs. both of those numbers are better than economists had expected. >>> asian markets closed substantially lower on worries that the u.s. may be sliding back into recession. and europe's debt crisis is getting worse. european markets took big hits today. it came after the dow had its worst single day since 2008. it fell 513 points yesterday. we'll look at the opening bell in 30 minutes hoping for better news there. >>> well, the partial shutdown of the

kristy seifkin is in richmond where police are trying to figure out what happened. >> reporter: good morning. a lot questions out there still this morning. we know that pg&e crews left just about a half hour ago after working all night on a ruptured pipeline that had been hit by a white chevy tahoe. that car accident happened because of a two-car shootout about 11:00 last night here at the 76 in richmond. apparently that car was hit by an assault rifle and we heard reports that as many as 50 casings were found here at the scene. we are told that the men inside that tahoe tried to flee the scene during the shooting and in doing so that's when they crashed into what's called a gas service. that's what ruptured the gas line. now, because of this, guests at the 40 flags hotel next door to the 76 station had to be evacuated. chp had to shut down the freeway for about an hour while they were doing an investigation. now, we have heard one of the victims that was shot was taken to john muir hospital and we are still waiting to hear word on his condition. pg&e crew melamine i spoke to earlier

kristy seifkin explains one of the shootings evacuated a motel. >> reporter: shell casings littered the 76 gas station in richmond this morning. one of three separate shootings that happened in the city last night. around 9:20 on monday, a 19- year-old man was shot on the 1700 block of jade street in north richmond. he was airlifted from doctors medical center in san pablo to john muir medical center in walnut creek where he still is in critical condition. just 90 minutes later there are reports of gunfire near imperial and carlson. there police found a white chevy tahoe had slammed into a building, rupturing a natural gas line at the 76 gas station next door. the two victims were trying to avoid gunfire when they crashed into the 40 flags motel. one of the victims got on the roof of the motel to avoid the gunfire. the hotel had to evacuate its guests and the freeway was temporarily shut down for investigation. the shootout was followed by a third shooting in richmond this time a woman hit driving eastbound on 80 near the mcdonald exit. >> she had just got off the freeway when she notic

. >> kristy seifkin was in the thick of it life in richmond and joins us -- think of it, live in richmond and joins us now with the latest on the traffic situation. >> reporter: the backup is already bad. we were making our way onto eastbound -- this is westbound 580 and we had to get off at cutting boulevard, we only made it to richmond four miles from the bridge. traffic is starting to creep along slowly as bridge just reaped but the reason for the backup was around 10:30 this morning, there are reports of a man with a gun. there are reports that are unconfirmed of gunfire and at that point several marin police officers and a special response team flooded the extended stay america that's off francisco boulevard. about a half hour later they evacuated the hotel guests within there. and at this point we just heard that the suspect is still barricaded within the building. we don't know if anybody was injured. there aren't any reports of injuries at this time. police are staying tight lips at this point. the bridge has just recently re- opened so this backup was actually pretty bad. cars we

kristy. >> reporter: good morning to you, grace and to frank. yes, this morning, police actually detained a suspect who they believe was involved in hitting that 9-year-old boy last night near downtown san francisco around 10:40 p.m. as we take a look at some images, you can see the suspect's car has bad front end damage. he was actually detained in hayward quite a ways away from where the hit-and-run happened. he had hit several cars along the way which is why he had so much damage to his own car and san francisco police brought several witnesses to actually come and identify the vehicle and they say that it matches the white toyota pickup truck they saw involved in the hit- and-run accident. that accident happened last night when a boy was walking just ahead of his family when he was hit at the mission street crosswalk. >> a large white toyota pickup truck was proceeding northbound on new montgomery, the wrong direction. it turned westbound on mission street and struck the child in the crosswalk. >> reporter: the driver didn't stop after hitti

kristy seifkin explains that firefighters are still looking for one person. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. just this morning around 3:00, a house just off the edwards exit of 580 in oakland caught on fire. that fire started in the granny in law unit at the back of the house and spread to the main property where the husband and wife were sleeping with their children. the wife heard a crackling noise and saw a yellow glow outside the window, jumped outside the house called 911 and fire crews responded quickly, evacuated the husband/wife and son safely. but there is one person potentially missing. as you mentioned, the brother of the woman who lives in the home lives in that in-law unit in the back and they don't know if he was spending the night in the property. they think he may have been somewhere else. they have called in this morning, haven't been able to get him. so still wondering about his safety and his whereabouts. as for that fire, started out as two alarm, downgraded to one alarm and it was put out in 30 minutes. the back unit that the brot

kristy seifkin is in richmond where police are still trying to determine a motive for the gunfire and lots of shell casings there, as well. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. a lot of things happening last night in richmond. about 10:4:07 p.m. police first started receiving calls that people heard gunfire near the imperial and carlson area so at that time they went to the 76 gags station and found that a white suv had crashed into a gas meter at the gas station. in addition to crashing into a hotel. and the reason for that accident was a car shootout that had happened a hill earlier around 11 p.m. we have heard reports that that car was hit with multiple shots by an assault rifle. and when those two men inside of the tahoe suv tried to flee the scene, that's when they crashed into what's called a gas service which then ruptured the gas line. now, the 40 flags hotel is next door to the 76 station. and that's where official found one of the victims when they arrived. he had actually climbed on the roof to get away from all of the gunfire and the other victim was found at the 76 lo

kristy seifkin is at san francisco general hospital with new details. good afternoon. >> reporter: ryan's injuries are not life-threatening. that nine-year-old boy was hit last night at mission and new montgomery. it's been a rough night for the family. they have requested their privacy from the media and aren't taking any interviews at this time. we have just gotten word about the suspect, who was involved in this hit-and-run accident. police have told us that they have detained the individual in san francisco. he is sitting in san francisco jail right now. they have confirmed that andrew vargas, a 21-year-old from hayward, is in custody. he is charge with leaving the scene of an accidents, driving under the influence, causing injury and possession of an open container. currently he is being held on 65, $100 bail. in addition to hitting him, he also injured a 58-year-old fee main from granite bay. her injuries are minor. the suspect vargas was detained in hayward early this morning after being stopped from hayward police about 11:30 at night. he is bei
