kristy siefkin is following the story for us. kristy, what do we know about this? >> reporter: the woman who was arrested, marc, her name is michelle charged with kopb speurty to commit a terrorism act. she is not the only person arrested in the valley to be involved. this is a picture of michelle bastian. f.b.i. joined up with the arizona attorney general's office to serve two search warrants, both of those to one was served in chandler and one in florence. the one served in chandler was at a locally owned bakery between warner and elliot. it is unclear where in florence that the second warrant was issued. her arrest came on the heels of another terrorism-related arrest. you may recall 18-year-old mahin khan was arrested back in june on trying to commit terrorism acts and he pled guilty to weapons charges, including the same charge that bastian was convicted of. the last we checked on mcso's website, she has yet to see a judge. it is unclear if whether or not her arrest is connected to the issuing of the two other search warrants. phoenix, i'm kristy siefkin, fox

we'll lay it out for you. >>> plus, kristy siefkin is back in the weather center for us with a look at your wake up samsung is officially >>> well, samsung cannot catch a break. they are officially halting the sales of their galaxy note 7 smartphones as the number of them catching fire continues to grow. this is a real growing safety concern. it continues to go for the original note 7s and the replacements as the problem started in august with a few isolated incidents that prompted samsung to delay shipments of the phone. then the company issued a recall in september for 2.5 million devices. before sending out replacement phones that same month. but now there are several reports of the replacement phones catching fire as well. perhaps the most serious incident happened last week when a southwest airlines flight had to be evacuated because of a smoking galaxy note 7 that plane. >> i noticed smoke just pouring out of my pocket, pulled the phone out of my pocket, threw it on to the ground where it continued to smoke. >> major carriers have announced their own suspension of sales of the ga

kristy siefkin joins us now. she tal a.s.u., the school that has become very involved in space exploration. kris it -- christy. >> the camera currently taking pictures of mars while orbiting was built at a.s.u. i spoke to an expert who is working on collecting data from the red planet, and he says he is ready to move there. a.s.u.'s camera, an infrared device that's been taking photos of mars for the past 15 years. >> it's the longest operating camera in orbit around a mars, is so every day we are still taking pictures, trying to learn more about the surface so when astronauts go, we are ready to keep them safe and do good science. >> nasa already has two rovers on mars, opportunity and curiosity. the rovers and other tools show that mars is cold and dry, hill says that there are areas with water where we could send humans. >> i think the chances of survival are pretty good. even though mars is a pretty harsh environment, it's things that we know how to deal with. we can deal with the cold. we can use the water t

fox 10's kristy siefkin has the latest for us tonight. >> skyfox capturing these images after a small airplane crashed into a shade structure. the plane went down around 10:00 a.m. just south avenue and pinnacle peak road. >> may day call came out from an aircraft that did not believe he was going to make it to the airport and that's the last information that i airport got and the last information that our alarm room got. >> phoenix fire and police scoured the area with the helicopter. they found the plane and its two passengers at a train park. both the man and woman were injured but responsive. and the plane was in pieces. the front propeller ripped off and the wings bent. extremely lightweight metal. think of a coke can and that's where they get their lift and thrust. so they are not made for crashes like cars are with stability, air bags and all of that. >> the passengers were headed to california for the man's birthday. a good samaritan called 911 and stayed with them until crews arrived. neighbors flock together scene shortly after. >> a lot of firemen and police& cars and a lot

i'm kristy siefkin, "fox 10 news." >>> it's the strongest atlantic hurricane we seen in years. matthew continues to batter the caribbean and florida and the east coast and they are bracing for the strong arrival. the strong storms arrival and evacuation orders are in effect. >> marc martinez is here with a look at the damage and the preparation for that damage. and it depends i forecasters are right or wrong. >> that's true and this hurricane has done a lot of damage at least a dozen people are dead after hurricane matthew made landfall in haiti. this is the fiercest caribbean storm in a decade. let's show you video from that area here. the u.s. national hurricane service is telling us that the strong winds, torrential rains and a storm surge with massive waves caused a significant amount of damage to the dominican republic and cuba. matthew is now a category 3 hurricane as it heads toward the northern direction in florida here take a look at what's going on there. the governor telling people along the coast to get out now if they can and you can see a lot of people filling up

. >> kristy siefkin joins us now with her first forecast and how it compares to other parts of the country where they are getting their first freeze. >> very different as you look out to the west coast and the east coast. ka sleeves today, but it was just too warm out there. many of you probably dried the same thing. a flat ridge through northern mexico influencing the forecast in our area, warm and dry conditions the next several days. yesterday's temps at this time compared to now, places like the grand canyon a whole 15 degrees cooler, seven degrees cooler into flag and kingman, six all in all, arizona warmer than what we saw yesterday, but very different conditions in a couple of places in the country. in fact, we are seeing freezing weather and snow in a couple of places including in the intermountain west, through parts of montana, through parts of idaho, all of these reports just north of great falls are snowfall, anywhere from a couple of inches to one location looking at eight inches. sa very cold weather, and freeze warnings in effect tonight until tuesday at noon. we'll have mor

kristy siefkin joins us now with a check of the weather. a little early, but there's a lt going on out there. >> bringing the rain, the gusty winds, tornados, and then we remnants of typhoon songda, not hitting the united states but just the remnants of that system. take a look at this, gusts of 80-100 miles an hour. this is the remnants of a possibility, as we have already seen, flooding, mudslides, and that storm surge is going to be significant. we are looking at waves up to 30 feet tall, and the rainfall totals as a result of this system, pretty significant. we start out saturday evening with totals maybe a half an inch to a few inches. as we get into monday night, we are looking in some areas, two and a half to seven inches, these areas of red, yellow, and orange, a foot plus of rain. i'll have more information on the storm system little bit later on in the show. >>> before president obama is out of the house, we will have cuban cigars in this country. that's my prediction. >> that was a local cigar shop owner back in july, talking abo

reporting live in downtown phoenix, i'm kristy siefkin, fox 10 news. officer-involved shooting that happened earlier this week. a 25-year-old man in full body armor was threatening to kill another man with a gun. when officers got there, the suspect took off and he tried to hide from them. police hid behind a police car and pointed the gun at the officers two different times. he was taken to the hospital and is expected to survive. none of the officers were hurt. >>> a man and woman are recovering at a hospital after their plane crashes at deer valley airport. they were headed to california when the plane crashed into a structure near 43rd avenue and pinnacle peak road. someone called 911 and stayed there with the victims until police got there. >> a lot of people pulling up now. before, it was just us. now i see a lot of people coming from the neighborhoods. >> when you see the damage from the airplane, the speed, the strip, it is a miracle that both patients were alive and talking to us. >> the man an to the hospital. >>> sheriff joe arpaio is runnin

fortunately, 35,000 coastal to look at where the storm is now, we go to kristy siefkin. >> reporter: the impact of the storm not just on cuba, haiti, bahamas but florida and the mid-atlantic coastline as well. want to start you out by showing you the track of the storm. matthew, as you mentioned, has winds, 120 miles an hour. it is moving very slowly, which is not good news in terms of the totals. as we look at the entire track of matthew, you will notice it is a category three hurricane right now. as it passes north of the bahamas, there is no land in sight and because of that and the warm water, this is going to increase in strength to a category four hurricane and that is when we see it advance to the florida coastline. take a look at this. the intensity of the rain as it makes its way toward melbo going to see the heaviest rainfall amounts. even as the system advances through florida up into parts of georgia and the carolinas, heavy rainfall expected as well. here is a look at the rainfall totals as we go through thursday evening into the weekend this is saturday early morning ho

i'm kristy siefkin, fox 10 news. early voting is underway in arizona, and why some you may have already sent back your early ballot and mailed it in, there's been some confusion about how to fill out those ballots. do you have to fill out all of the races? what type of pin should you use? first of all, you do not have to vote for every candidate for every race. only vote for the candidates that you want to vote for. secondly, and this is in the social media okay inside the polling place posted on social media, but it can only be of you and your ballot. no one else in the picture. and finally, this is a concern of a lot of voters, what type of pen should you use. ballpoint or felt tip pens are okay, but sharpies, which i have used in the past, that can cause some serious problems with your ballot because it bleeds over to the other side. will bleed through to the back or front, whichever side you're doing, and that could have you vote for something else that you had no intention to voting in that way. it could make yo

. >> kristy siefkin, "fox 10 news." >>> quite a headache for drivers today on the eastbound i-10. it was shut down west of downtown phoenix today after a tractor-trailer smashed into the overhead lights in the deck park tunnel. that caused a lot of traffic backups during the lunch hour. this is an unusual scene especially middle of the day. no cars moving into the tunnel on the eastbound i-10. entirely shut down after their big rig damagd the overhead lights. crews quickly repaired the damaged lights and the tunnel back open tonight and it was open just before 1:00 this afternoon. >>> police are trying to catch a man who they say sexually assaulted a teenage girl in an avondale park this happened on the night of september 26th. the 17-year-old girl was walking in the park alone near 107th avenue and indian school road. the suspect hit her on the back of the head and then forced her to the ground and sexually assaulted her. she fought him off and was able to get help. people who live into park are on edge. >> i pray that they catch the individual because it could have been my child
