tom: let's bring in bloomberg opening trade anchor kriti gupta on the ground for us in paris. macron saying the government might survive, wishful thinking, kriti? >> the odds are stacked against them but in the words of michel barnier, it is not impossible. tom, it comes down to the way parliament is broken down around this vote. french parliament is broken down into thirds at the moment. nfp, the left coalition, the right with marine le pen and national rally and emmanuel macron's party in the center. what is tricky is there could be a make or break case when it comes to the socialist party, the most interest faction when it comes to the left side of parliament. what is significant is those are the people both michel barnier and emmanuel macron targeted the last 24 hours saying these people could vote with their conscience. could potentially make or break this vote and that is where the speculation lies that if you see enough socialists in parliament abstain from the vote, there is a slim but not impossible to is that michel barnier could make it out of this vote with his job

funding bill, threatening a stopgap measure that would keep the government open until mid march break kriti gupta joins me now for more on this. this seems to come out of nowhere to some extent. they had agreed to tied things over until march, then trump intervenes. kriti: there was already a federal government shutdown on the cards for this week. it was foster kick in friday at midnight. the democrats and republicans it felt like created a bipartisan agreement, including provisions for an nfl stadium that got moved to washington, d.c. but the all clear sign was very much lit until elon musk, vivek ramaswamy the two expected heads of the department of government efficiency that donald trump is creating. and had suddenly married the stopgap bill which would've extended funding from the end of this week into mid-march approximately, and tied it to the debt ceiling. here is where it gets tricky. because the debt ceiling kicks in 10 days before donald trump gets inaugurated on january 10. the way around it is that the treasury department has to extend and use extraordinary measures to extend funding

let's get more from kriti gupta on the ground for us in paris. his leave the french budget? kriti: in a very precarious position. emmanuel macron will have to pass a special law that brings over the 2024 budget into the first couple months of 2025. that sounds simple. what that actually means in practice is that french pit -- citizens may have to have higher tax burdens. they may have contributions linked to 2024 inflation. some of the constraints are some of the extra perks or cushions built into the 2024 budget based on economic data say 12 months ago would fold over into 2025. we are no stranger to the fact that inflation has largely changed in the last 12 months. the yield story has changed as has affordability. that will affect things like taxes, drug reimbursements. at the end of the day, how much people are able to access when it comes to their pension accounts. that's a key sticking point in french politics. tom: the prospects of a budget being passed seems pretty slim in the near term in paris. thank you. joining us on the grounds in pari

joining us from paris is kriti gupta. what is the latest in paris? iti: shell barnier is out and emmanuel macron is in the spotlight but it is marine le pen all over the french newspapers. the idea that emmanuel macron has to solve the puzzle of which caretaker prime minister, potentially his eighth, can survive a no-confidence vote from marine le pen while also battling resignation calls from the far left. the trick is what happens to the budget because that is where the sticking point is. the budget does not increase a deficit. the most likely outcome will be a technocratic government in france, one that rules over the 2024 budget into 2025 and creates potentially inflationary costs for french consumers come increases taxes for a lot of the french household but then potentially because of the austerity decreases some of the deficit concerns as well and that is what is reflected in the markets. jonathan: fantastic reporting over the last few days. kriti gupta out of paris. simon french joins us. we clearly have a political crisis, chaos in the govern
