. >> there was research from allen krueger, head of the president's own national council of economic advisers. he did impeer cal work that said it extends the duration of unemployment and that people spend three times as much time looking for work in the last two weeks before their checks run out. it just makes logical sense. no one wants to take food out of anyone's mouth. but there's data that shows it extends the time. >> it's being welfare by a deferent name. no one wants anyone to go hungry. no one wants families to be starving. call it what it is. don't call it unemployment. ca call it welfare. >> a lot of people do it. i can't find a job or won't find a job. >> interesting. let's move on to the next topic. to some of the biggest names in silicon valley including google, microsoft, facebook, banning together now, calling on the nsa to rein in vast surveillance of americans. melissa, is this just all for pr? are they now on the other end of lots of americans who think it's overdone? >> they're in a really tough spot. because if people don't trust their security on their websites

it's very tough to lose a benefit but we have evidence, including alan krueger who was once president chief economic adviser. he wrote a paper in which he said, you know, if you extend unemployment benefits too long, people don't cast their net widely for available job us. they want their ideal job. they want the job they had before. the longer you do that, the longer you postpone the day of reckoning, there's still atrophy. one of the things we know, if you're unemployed for two or three years, you lose your edge and a lot of employers figure that out. and therefore, you become less employable. >> and then there are people, the guy that we interviewed for the documentary on the subject who said why should i work when the government pays me not to work. i imagine there are a lot of those folks. isn't it true the longer people are paid unemployment checks, the more they tend to remain jobless? is there a correlation? >> absolutely. it's not academic study, it's human nature. you don't necessarily go out and put forth your maximum effort. nobody is going to look over your shoulder to ge

alan krueger and david card years ago published the american economic review and found the closest thing to the random experiment which is new jersey raised its minimum wage. they let the counties on both sides of the border and looked at fast food restaurants and noted the fact that job growth is the same on both sides of the border. that was a great study. the problem with that study was it was a few counties in two states at one point in time. since then i think it was about two years ago a paper that use basically the same methodology was published in a review of economic statistics but rather than looking at just one pair it looked at over 1000 pairs of different states and counties where one neighbor raised its minimum wage and one didn't and that's what happened with unemployment. so they looked at over 1000 on average the employment difference between a place that raised its minimum wage in the place that didn't was zero. it's that type of quasi-random experiment that is as close as we get to real science and empirical economics that is the type of data we looked at in assessing
