we've been tuning in live to our sister station, ktla and southern california. they've been walking through neighborhoods just it looks like it's pitch dark out because they can't see a thing. but the smoke and the flames, this suit is thick. it's carpeted everything. a lot of people had to run away from their cars because they were in traffic jams trying to evacuate overnight. so first light even risen in some neighborhoods because it's just dark with thick black smoke. and we'll bring you some of that live coverage here throughout the morning. so stay tuned for that. let's get the latest now on those winds. those have been the big culprit overnight, john. yeah, that's exactly right. it's the wind in southern california. we also had it here in the bay. but southern california has seen the strongest of gas. >> and that's paired with something that we have not seen in the bay, which has been very dry conditions. we've been benefiting from multiple rainfalls la surrounding area has seen hardly anything that you get a dry offshore. santa ana wind and even in januar

well, that's our live coverage from ktla this morning.course, we're covering multiple fires burning and rapidly spreading in southern california. you see this video here from our >> partners down at ktla in southern california and the amount of devastation that has >> and just a short amount of time. >> actually hard to see for sure. this is where we're sitting at the bay bridge right now. it has calmed down for us. let's compare our winds here locally in the bay with what we've seen in southern california. we'll start with the sierra which is seen extraordinary lee, windy conditions over 100 mile per hour gusts nearby. the eaton fire detections of around 93 mile per hour gusts. that's the fire that's burning just above altadena and pasadena nearby. the palisades fire. the one that's burning around pacific palisades 76 mile per hour peak wind gusts near by the her spy around 66 miles per hour. now, compare that with the oakland hills, which obviously has been extraordinarily windy, too, with around a 54 mile per hour wind gusts. so our wi

this is a live look courtesy of our sister station, ktla. it's being called the sunset fire started in runyon canyon and it has prompted mandatory evacuations. and crews are also battling the 8 and fire in altadena. >> as well as the the massive palisades fire in the pacific palisades in total, tens of thousands of people have been forced to evacuate from their homes. at least 5 people have died more than 1000 structures have burned to the ground. emergency crews in sacramento. they're working really around the clock to try and coordinate the state's response to the destructive fires there in southern california. our capitol correspondent eytan wallace has that story. yeah, here at cal oes officials have screens to actively monitor real-time data coming in from the fire zone. all of that as crews have been deployed from across the state. >> to fight the flames. as fires rage across southern california. hundreds of miles from there here at the california governor's office of emergency services state operation center in northern california. >>

again, a live picture from our sister station down in los angeles, ktla. >> yeah, this is being called the auto fire which has been spreading near a golf course course which we mentioned earlier. that's the river ridge golf course on these flames were shown off of an alert california cameron at about 8 o'clock tonight. but now we're getting a live look from the ktla helicopter the ventura county sheriff's office did actually issue an evacuation order. we 9 o'clock. yeah. for zone one which included santa clara river between venter road and victoria avenue, which and that really matter much to our viewers see all there are evacuations. yeah, and you can see a closer look here as those crews are trying to knock down some of those flames and some very large brush there that as you can see, very dry. it's been so dry. >> down in southern california, they have not had any significant rain since may of last year so that we know what that means. you know, living up here when we don't get rain for even a month or it's dangerous. and so the fact that they haven't had any significant rain for ab

this is video from our sister station in los angeles, ktla. it shows a house in studio city on fire and there it is collapsing. there. fire officials say this home likely caught fire because of embers from the sun set fire, which has been burning in the hollywood hills. the sunset fire is the 6th major fire to burn across la county over the last 48 hours that erupted just before 6 o'clock tonight south of sunset boulevard north of sunset boulevard and has burned about 19 acres near the hollywood walk of fame and other iconic landmarks. of course it is at 0% containment tonight. this new fire adding to the chaos in la county that fire crews are having to deal with there battling the massive palisades fire as well. yeah. it's now been dubbed the most destructive fire in los angeles county history and it's left many people without homes. >> it's just it's just shocking just to look around. it didn't seem real. >> the palisades fire has grown to nearly 16,000 acres and it is still at 0%. containment. >> there are the 6 fires burning in the la coun

this is in riverside county and we're looking from above courtesy of our sister station ktla. yeah, it's in your rupa, i believe. and it looks like the ground crews are. >> getting handle on this is apparently a couple of acres. you can see them down there just trying to beat that thing back. there are around the perimeter of it. is in a thick brush area and they were able the crews were able to get into the area to to try to tamp this thing down. they've been attacking it with the >> hand tools, predominantly and there is a neighborhood not too far from where the fire is burning in that that thick grass and brush you. rupa valley is just west of the city of riverside, north of corona, south of rancho cucamonga. if you're familiar with that part of riverside county, but obviously with the situation in los angeles county to the west. you worry about staffing levels. i'm sure you know, obviously all other all over southern california have been in la county helping, but it looks like they've been able to attack this one pretty quickly. they haven't officially given any word on ac

ktla, where they have been covering this since late tuesday morning. when the first of now 6 fires began. that was the palisades fire that night. you had the eaton fire start in altadena. that one more than 10,000 homes have have been lost, just really and that day. and the overnight that followed alone. it's it's remarkable. you know, shot like this really doesn't tell the story. it looks so peaceful. and, you know, you can't really see. >> the devastation on the ground, but maybe it's a chance to, you know, take a deep breath. lawrence, will, though firefighters be able you know, take that deep breath yeah. for long if they do get those active fires there, they did get. >> a little bit of a break today. the winds have backed off. now in southern california, not everywhere. we're still seeing some gusty winds in the malibu area. and of course, that's near one of the fires. so watching that very closely. but elsewhere, you can see some of those winds about 5 to about 8 miles per hour down below. and so that is some good news after another round of gust

and then there's the northern los angeles county fire called the lydia fire enamel of ali and ktla posted this picture. we can see the plumes of smoke rising from that fire in angeles national forest. that one is near act in and the latest data shows that's about 350 acres big. but allen's 40% qbs. so some good news there. but hearst fire, which is another one that we're following here. >> that broke out tuesday evening in sylmar just. at this point you can see they're attacking from the air as crews were dumping fire retardant on the area. that fire is clearly not under control. it's 10% contained right now, but it's still growing 855 acres burned so far. >> that the latest on the hearst fire, then there's the eaton fire and this has been deadly so far. now, 5 people >> have been killed in this fire. it is 10,000 plus acre 0% contained at this point. this is a big one that started tuesday night when those winds were gusting at 100 miles an hour. it's >> causing scenes like this to. in fact, i think we have video of bank of america that burned to the ground. but even if we don't, that's f

our only sister station ktla, posting this picture showing large plumes of smoke coming from the angeles national forest. according to cal fire. it's part of wednesday afternoon, right near acton. that's about 50 miles north of the city of l a the latest data showing its burn 340 acres and is thankful e 40% contained. now let's talk about the hearse fire. that's when burning since tuesday evening, right in sylmar. not too far from san fernando. this is actually video crews dumping fire retardant in the area trying to get that fire under control. the fire caused an emergency officials to have to issue a mandatory evacuation order so far. cal fire says it's far more than 800 acres and is only 10% contained. cal fire saying the deadly eaton fire burning in altadena is now responsible for burning more than 10,000 acres with 0% containment. that's being blamed for the deaths of 5 people. according to fire officials that started tuesday evening. while the winds in the area were gusting and more than 100 miles per hour. it calls scenes like this where a bank of america branch in altadena burned

northern los angeles county, the lydia fire is burning in the antelope valley r-la sister station ktla, posting these pictures showing large plumes of smoke coming up from the national forest and clear in these live shots in studio city. you can see structures falling to the ground. cal fire says that the fire that broke out yesterday there an antelope valley broke out near acton. and that's about 50 miles north of the city of l a the latest data shows that it's burned about 384 acres. it's about 40% contained. so firefighters and actually make some progress. there are just so many structures, as you can see, have been burned. >> and now distance, the smoke coming up from the libya and we also have the hearse fire that we're following in san fernando. and crews have been putting fire retardant on that. fighting it from the air. as you can see, they issued mandatory evacuation orders and this fire has burned about 800 acres. it's 10% contained at this point. and then there's the fire. and this is the one that we spent a lot of time discussing yesterday here on the kron 4 morning news be
