ktvu's debora villalon is at the scene. how is it looking there, deborah? >> reporter: well, it's still a mess. take a look behind us, they just patched the street, pg&e just drove away. that's where they drove down to take a look at the damage line. right behind that is the gaping sinkhole. right now, the real accident out on the neighborhood, at this hour, pg&e crews are knocking on doors, restoring gas, one meter at a time. >> hi there. we are going to turn the gas back on. >> reporter: words residents waited for. after a night and day of no hot water. and chilly homes with no heat. pg&e crews started getting gas burners glowing again before sundown. >> usually, the first floor gets really cold. so it's always nice to have a heater. >> reporter: water still runs under the sinkhole that started it all. sidewalk collapsed sunday afternoon, then as the soil liquefied, this traffic light plunged straight down into the hold onto the four inch gas line. >> the sidewalk broke away. and it dropped down like a guillotine. damaged the pipe right underneath it. >>

that man's mother reached out to ktvu saying their rented truck carried irreplaceable belongings. amber lee live in our newsroom now with her story. amber? >> reporter: the stolen items include family photographs and a vintage jewelry collection. the 74-year-old mom tells me she filed a police report but doesn't hold out much hope since what was stolen didn't have serial numbers, just sentimental value. >> those two chairs right there. >> reporter:, the hard meyer shows us miscellaneous items the thieves left behind. a few boxes of books and bedding. they were among the items packed inside this truck that the 74-year-old rented to move her son belongings to portland, his new home. but about two weeks ago, the night before the move, the truck was stolen. >> i'm devastated. heartbroken. i'm heartbroken for me and for him. >> reporter: hard meyer tells us the rental truck was parked at point and hudson, by a friend's home when it was stolen. >> i feel like it is such a complete violation. >> reporter: the friend planned to drive to portland for her son michael moore who is blind and

ktvu's cristina rendon live at the west oakland bart station to explain.cristina. >> reporter: well, heather, bart says they have reconfigured the power supply so cars are no longer getting damaged. they have to shut off the power supply here in west oakland, and it seems to have solved the problem at least for now. 80 bart cars are out of service and under repair. a spike in voltage near the east end of the trance bay tube appears to have burned out propulsion equipment on certain cars, knocking them out of service over the past few weeks. as a temporary fix, bart shut down the power to a substation near west oakland. >> we can thou put our efforts into fixing up those damaged cars and getting the car count back up towards normal, so that monday people aren't feeling any impacts. >> reporter: today 17 trains are running one car short, adding to an already crowded commute. >> i did see this morning that there was a seven-car train. i've never seen a seven-car train before. >> made a u-turn and went straight back to the casual carpool and found a ride fairl

ktvu's tom vacar live in millbrae.you have learned that insurance is now an issue. >> reporter: let me just say this. this is a new one on me. i thought i knew a lot about insurance, and i do, but this is a new one on me. hat to do with four homes in millbrae where a massive mess caused by a sewer pipe should be a huge lesson for every one of us. it four homes on a millbrae hillside were flooded with sewage during saturday's torrential storms. it caused massive damage to walls, floors, carpet, furniture, and other property. >> there was an outside contractor doing sewer work and because of that, i'm not 10% positive, but it contributed to the sewer lines backing up. >> reporter: his down stairs and garage was flooded and much of his property was destroyed by the toxic mess. insurers dispatched emergency cleanup crews. his insurance company has not yet verified his coverage but two of his neighbors affected by the very same backup got nasty surprises from their insurers today. >> our insurance called up this morning say

ktvu tara moriarty was there. how did things go in court today. >> jury selection took quite a long time. almost all day. some of the questions that they were asking potential jurors were do you know police, how do you feel about police? do you have any relationships with police? do you feel that relationship may taint your jump in this case. another question was how do you feel about protestors and jurors got a great look at protestors in the way in the courthouse. 200 people were protesting and here to support the niesto family accusing the city of the police officers killing their 28-year-old son two years ago. during opening statements, the defense portrayed niesto as someone acting erratically. pointed a taser at the officers that acted in self-defense. the plaintiff said the man was eating a burrito at sunset with his taser in his holster that he used as his job as security guards and some people thought it was a real gun and called 911. niesto's attorney says the officers have been cleared of wrongdoing fir

ktvu ktvu fox 2's henry lee is there. >> reporter: mike, i am standing right here at south lake in gold gate park. this is on the west end of the park near chain of lakes. it was about eight this morning when the gruesome discovery was made. take a look at this video that was shot earlier this morning. it was a family feeding ducks here in this lake when they found a body floating in the water. they immediately called police. police, firefighters arrived, confirmed that the man, we believe it is a man, clothed body, was dead. now it will be up it the medical examiner, san francisco, to determine how this person died. at this point there are no signs of foul play, but the mystery remains. how did he end up in this lake? the medical examiner will conduct an autopsy and that will determine whether it was by suicide perhaps, whether this was accidental. as we come back out here live, it's very quiet now. there is a lot of activity here. some streets in the immediate area were blocked off, and now it's back to normal. very popular scene with joggers and waterfowl. very jarring, indeed, to ha
