ktvu tom vacar has the story. >> the mr.th and international in east oakland, which feeds and clothes five families, was hit and totally ransacked by a flash theft crew at about 6 a.m. wednesday. despite physical and digital security measures painstakingly installed to prevent it, it serves east oakland by fixing broken phones, selling new electronics and facilitating multitudes of customers in getting on prepaid plans they can afford. >> we do help a lot of people out here. if sometimes they're short on money, we'll let them go right? and we fix about 10 to 15 phones every single day. >> mohammed said he summoned police repeatedly, even when the burglary was underway. >> when i called 911, she she told me and i quote, she said, stop calling this because this is an emergency line like this is not an emergency, right? like 15 people broke in. that's a crime, isn't it? and then i started calling the non-emergency line and i'm on hold for ten minutes and nobody picked up. i called actually matter. a matter of fact, like 5 or 6

ktvu. jana katsuyama has the story. >> the oakland city council has approved cuts to address a $129 million deficit through the fiscal year, including up to 92 layoffs. the biggest budget cuts call for slashing police overtime, closing six fire engine stations and cutting back in the finance department. the oakland department of transportation and the public works departments. >> we're still doing our modeling. we'll have something out for you guys in the next week or so. that identifies which stations we're going to have to close. >> oakland's fire chief says no firefighters will be laid off, but there will be reassignments to other stations. >> it will definitely impact response times. >> that's nearly 30% of the fire department closed, unable to respond to oaklanders. >> the oakland firefighters union held a meeting wednesday, and a coalition of labor unions are pushing for the city to ramp up tax collection before any layoffs. >> there are tens of millions of dollars of uncollected reve

jesse gary, ktvu, fox two news. claudine will head back to you up in oakland. >> all right, jesse, thank you for the update. well, alum rock school district in east san jose has voted to close six schools and consolidate as many as seven others at the end of the school year. the school board made the vote unanimously last night in an effort to save money and close its $20 million deficit. the schools closing are donald meyer, sylvia castle, horace curtin, dorsey elementary school, as well, along with joseph george middle and renaissance academy at fisher. some parents say they're now concerned about overcrowding in their kids schools. >> it seems like they're just going to stick a bunch of kids in another school. it's going to be really hard for the teachers. it's kind of worried because i feel like they're like 20, 22 kids to a teacher now. and like, i think they're going to like 30 something kids to teacher. just doesn't seem like it's enough attention for each child. >> the district says its enrollment is down by

. >> the 11:00 news on ktvu fox two starts now. >> good evening i'm greg lee. we want to get you caught up on some of our top stories tonight. a government shutdown has been avoided. the u.s. senate forced to go into overtime, passing a continuing resolution at 12:38 a.m. saturday morning, d.c. time. the package will keep the government funded at current levels through mid-march and avoids a service stoppage, which would have affected at least nine federal agencies. this was congress's third attempt at getting a deal done. it does not include a provision to raise the debt ceiling that president elect donald trump had called for, although his adviser, elon musk, did express support for the bill online. an investigation is underway in san francisco after police shot and killed an armed man in union square during an overnight confrontation. the man, who was a security guard at the dior boutique, was wanted for hitting two pedestrians in a bicyclist with a vehicle hours earlier during a chase. the reason for that chase is still unclear. police say they used surveil

ktvu is amanda quintana live in oakland this morning? this afternoon, with more on the changes many districts are being forced to make and why amanda. >> yes, well, we are hearing similar stories from many of these school districts, but at least four of them have meetings tonight. so that is in hayward, fremont alum rock and in oakland. they will all have meetings trying to discuss what they can do to try to save mone. as students return to the classroom after thanksgiving break, the fate of their schools and activities could be on the chopping block. why? well, one of the biggest factors is declining enrollment. >> we're losing about 2 to 300 students a year. and part of that is because people are not having children anymore. and in california and in the bay area in particular, people are finding that it's expensive to live here. so they're migrating to other parts of the state. >> state funding depends on daily enrollment. and at the same time, pandemic relief funds are running out, leaving school districts with large deficits. at leas

betty yu ktvu, fox two news. >> new at 11. leaders of bay area food banks are uniting tomorrow on giving tuesday to send out an urgent call for public support as food insecurity in the region continues to be historically high, the high cost of living and an end to pandemic era government benefits have all resulted in more neighbors relying on food bank services. the five bay area food banks say they are hoping for community support that will help fund their services through the season and into the new year. the city of oakland's credit rating has been cut to levels from aa to single aa, according to fitch ratings. the cut is due to the challenge of plugging oakland's budget gaps amid a change in political leadership. fitch also revised the city's outlook to negative from stable, indicating the possibility for future cuts. oakland's projected budget gap for the current fiscal year is $93 million. new numbers from the oakland police department show oakland is on track to end the year with a drop in crime compared to last year. n

you're watching the 11:00 news on ktvu.bakery will be closing its broadway location this week. the owners of firebrand artisan breads making the announcement on social media saying the decision was due to their ten year lease coming to an end. the owners say it was a tough decision after facing several issues over the years, including an electrical fire, the pandemic, multiple break ins, increased thefts and assaults. but the bakery will live on. owners say the business will consolidate to its alameda location, which opened up last summer. the popular bay bridge lights are set to return in just a few months now, but an organization is suing the nonprofit, working to reinstall those dazzling lights, citing a neurologic hazard. the group, known as the soft light foundation, wants to stop the led lights from being turned back on. according to the lawsuit, the group claims the display is a hazard to people with autism or epilepsy and will be disruptive and confusing to birds and insects. the nonprofit illuminate will string the

ktvu christien kafton. joining us now live. and workers at one major hotel chain, kristen, have now reached a tentative deal. >> yeah. that's right. the workers here at the marriott and at marriott around town had been on strike for months and are in the process of reviewing and possibly ratifying that new contract that could be signed as early as tonight. meanwhile, amazon workers have just walked off the job. amazon workers nationwide and here in san francisco walked off the job and onto the picket lines backed by the teamsters union. dozens of workers in one of san francisco's distribution warehouses asked amazon for pay increases, better benefits and to recognize the union. they say they gave amazon a december 15th deadline but were ignored. >> they refuse to do that. they've refused all the other deadlines that we've set for them. so now they've left us with no choice but to strike. >> amazon responded to the strike, saying in part, quote, this is another attempt to push a false narrative. the truth is that the teamsters h

as ktvu james torres explains.al to change. >> governor gavin newsom and california highway patrol leaders say their efforts in oakland continue to show results. a holiday blitz from san diego to the bay area led to 117 arrests and $38,000 in stolen merchandise recovered in just the last few weeks. chp says the 480 flock cameras in oakland are a game changer. >> this has allowed us to successfully go after criminals for attempted murder on our freeways. vehicles that pursue from us hit and run stolen vehicles and other felonies. >> both chp and newsom say oakland police need to be able to do the same thing. according to opd's pursuit policy, an officer can only chase a suspect if they have probable cause that a criminal is suspected of a violent crime. newsom wants to loosen those rules. >> you could be drunk. you can run a red light. you can come close to sideswiping a school bus during the morning hours, right in front of a police officer. and the pursuit policy in oakland says, we can't we cannot pursue that sus
