a story that ktvu fox 2 news has been working on for months. ktvu's eric rasmussen explains why there is still debate. >> talking about a commercial property in menlow park. they insist there is no health risk but 2 investigates uncovered documents that have some calling for more testing. two buildings have been vacant for 7 years now but a study of the property in 2007 found volatile organic compounds in the ground water. they can be harmful but the levels were deemed too high if it was used for drinking. right now it is not. however after seeing the information one expert in the bay area says there needs to be more testing. >> simply measuring the ground water doesn't give you enough information because the cub tamination in the soil can give up -- contamination in the coil can cause contamination inside. >> reporter: he brought his concerns to us last summer. allegations the contamination wasn't disclosed was filed by a lawsuit. it raises concerns about toxic contamination at the property. we will have that story and what happened when we ask

ktvu fox 2 news reporter is in our newsroom. there are new developments in this gruesome and really mysterious case. >> this may complicate things for the homicide case even though the suspect had been released from jail because of lack of evidence. police were gathering evidence. police confirmed mark andreas died add a local hospital. he checked himself into a hospital but it's unknown why. he was arrested. the district attorney declined to prosecute saying there was not enough evidence but the case is very much an active investigation. here's what one former prosecutor told us. >> it's possible this guy worked with somebody else. there could be a second suspect. they might have gotten the wrong guy. just because he carried the body parts alone does not mean he is the guy. this case is not over but it's certainly a tough one. >> reporter: i'm sorry to learn that mark andres died. during the short time i represented mark i found him to be a kind and engaging person. police are still trying to identify the dead man from the suit

ktvu fox 2 alex savidge is lye in daly city. you have more on the search and reaction from other cab drivers too. >> reporter: dave, good morning to you. cabby's are telling us this morning. they tell us this is a dangerous job and they are not necessarily surprised to hear about this brutal assault. this happened on valentine's day or really the day after. the early morning hours of february 15th. the video just released by daly city police from the cabs on board cameras. investigators are trying to identify and arrest the man seen riding in this cab. he was wearing a dress shirt and a tie at the time. the driver picked him up in downtown san francisco and dropped him off in daly city. that is when the passenger refused to pay his fair. when the driver got out to confront him, the passenger began punching and kicking the driver leafing her on the ground. >> too many people to get in the cab and sometimes refuse to pay. so far me, i just let him go. i don't want to fight with him. what can you do? just let him go. >> just let hi

ktvu fox two's alex savage live in walnut creek this morning. you're saying many drivers are wondering how gasoline prices are going to be affected here. >> there's something else to worry about in the bay area. you probably remember, at the beginning of this month, the de soro refinery not far away in martinez, shut down because of a labor dispute. that led talk steady increase in pump prices. what things look like this morning in walnut creek. things are only going to get worse, and that's because of that huge explosion and fire at the exdon mobile refinery in torrence south of l.a.. at least part of it has been shut down indefinitely. combined, the torrence refinery and martinez refinery produce about 16% of california's gasoline. some analysts this morning are forecasting as much as a 10% spike in gas prices across the state because of the two shutdowns. drivers we talked to say they didn't expect prices to stay low forever. >> takes forever for it to go down. when it goes down, you know it's going to go back up again. just the way it's goin

ktvu fox 2 janine de la vega is joining us live now. you're at a dog park in sunnyvale.out a claim of toxic ingredients. what did you find out? >> that spokesman from purina told me this lawsuit that is filed against the company is completely baseless. this involves the beneful dry dog food line. but there is a man that says beneful dry dog food is why his dog died. that dog owner is the plaintiff in a class action lawsuit that was filed in u.s. district court in northern california. it states that the eight kinds of beneful dog food has caused internal bleeding, liver failure, vomiting, diarrhea, and kidney failure. the dog owner says he started buying beneful in late december or early january this year and gave it to his dog. soon after he says all three of his dogs became sick and his bulldog died. the suit says that toxins in the dog food are to blame including propylene glycol. in the past four years there has been more than 3,000 online complaints with dogs becoming ill or dying after eating beneful. they say there is nothing wrong with beneful and millions of dogs

tom vacar, ktvu fox 2 news. >> tom, obviously this situation can't go on like this forever. do you think we're headed for either a strike or lock out or do you think there's any real hope that a settlement could be near? >> there's hope, because you have to understand what they're looking at. if there's a lock out or a strike, more likely a lock out. then what happens is the president would reluctantly call in the heartily act and they would have to for 80 days go back to work and negotiate with each other. then it will be up to the congress to pass a law to order them back to work. remember this is a republican congress. and even though they may not have an overwhelming majority to overwrite a veto, there's plenty of democrats in places that are being severely impacted by this kind of a shut down and they might decide to say we need to get these guys back to work. there's a whole bunch at stake for the labor movement, for the management movement. and certainly for the economy of the united states. >> yeah there sure is a lot at stake. tom vacar, thank you. >>> a state of em

ktvu fox 2 reporter tara moriarty is there. you are gathering information. so what do you know right now? >> reporter: well we just spoke with search and rescue crews and they say a man, son, and sons girlfriend went out on the canoe around 11:30. we know the man as well as the girlfriend were rescued but the man later died at the hospital. and right now crews are still searching for the son who is still miss examining now we know this search again started around 11:30 last night. the search is still active. the coast guard took off 10-15 minutes ago to refuel and come back out when it's daylight. when we were driving over the san mateo bridge, we could see a fire boat out on the bay. the search for the canoers started just before 11:30. and slowly the search moved southward through coyote point to the san mateo bridge. that is where we are right now we are standing near the san mateo bridge where we saw crews with their flashlights walking along the waters edge. we will break down and head up there and we'll have more information coming up in the next half

in alameda, ktvu fox 2 news. >> police are searching for a suspected car thief who they say tried to run over an officer with his car in sunny vail. it happened last night as a santa clara police officer in an unmarked suv and another officer in a patrol car tried to pull over a white mercedes because it matched the description of a car involved in several nearby burglaries. according to police, the driver of the mercedes drove straight at one of the officers and that's when the officer pulled out his weapon and fired. >> all we know right now is he feared enough for his life that he was going to be pinned between the two vehicles. he decided to take the force and shoot at the vehicle. we'll know more as we investigate. that's part of our investigation, to find out everything that occurred. >> police say at this point, they don't know how many people were in the mercedes. the officer is not hurt and is on paid administrative leave. >>> another warning tonight about people posing as utility workers and burglarizing homes. police say the burglars struck twice yesterday afternoon in the
