like the ku klux klan, violence was meant to stop this. okay. and on one level, klan attacks were simply an example, a vigilante violence which already existed right in which usually small groups of white men attack two black men and women and their white allies who posed a particular threat to white control. they threatened them. they whipped them. they raped them. they shot and maimed them. right. usually at their homes, usually at night. and sometimes they killed them through shooting them or hanging them. most normally such patterns of violence were not new. they would have been too familiar to people in the south, particularly during the civil war and right after the civil war. there was a lot of guerrilla violence aimed at a whole bunch of different kinds of people, including freed people. right. but this kind of nighttime attack by armed groups of men was something which was not unfamiliar in the rural southern landscape. by the time the klan emerged so that wasn't particularly what was new. yeah, the klan was not simply an epidemic of wh

there's kind of a myth that the ku klux klan was made up of losers and louts and hooligans. and so but in fact, it was largely founded and led by educated at its six founders, royal college graduates in tennessee. 1866 and its leaders almost everywhere. as jane said, her introduction were professional people, landowners, doctors, sometimes churchmen, journalists and so on. they were community leaders, which makes what they perpetrated all the more disturbing. they can't be written off by dismissing the the kind of people who who made up the klan. so. i'm going to talk about a couple of things here. i'm going to talk about what the klan was, the klan of the 1870s, and then i'll talk about how the federal government coped with it and in which, yes, as jane said, congress as well as president grant played a pivotal roles. so insofar we think of the ku klux klan today, it's most often i think the klan of the 20th century. many of us remember it's more recent. ascendancy in the 19 oh sixties and so on, in reaction to the civil rights movement. the original ku klux klan was founde

obviously, ku klux klan. he it out of there, but they did put bullet holes in the train door as he got it closed. from that point on, mark kirkland, who had responsibility for that, sent guard of ten soldiers with gibson every day for a month on that route every day he was that he was going back forth he had ten soldiers the klux klan members were still out there, but there was nothing that they would they would not engage in a firefight. the with the soldiers. but by the end of the month, as we read in ulysses president grant's cabinet memos, grant want this to happen anymore, he this is this is not sustainable. and so, of course, grant had a choice. and you might think well, he'll just put a white guy in there. you know that's what that's what the kentuckians that's what everybody in the state is up talking about. no, he didn't. what granted was he he told markland to shut down the mail service between louisville and lexington so that there was no mail would be carried on the railroad on that most important
