i want to bring in kurt bardella one last time this hour. kurt, as a former consultant to the breitbart media group, i know you articulated the reasons for why you left that position because you didn't agree with a lot of what was happening within that news organization. but how would you expect steve bannon to react to something like this, given that you must know him or at least his ideology pretty well? >> well, i think to know how steve thinks, look at what he said publicly. and i remember this "daily beast" story where steve flat-out said that it was his goal to destroy the state, to bring everything crashing down and destroy all of today's establishment. i think when you look at the pictures that are on our screen right now, what's happening today, this bears that out. this is exactly what steve has talked about, what he's wanted to have happen. it's exactly the type of ideology that breitbart has advanced as long as i can remember now, good grief, and everything that's playing out very much is bringing to life a lot of the things that

kurt bardella and richard painter.s i'll let our audience know that the governor of virginia tweeted out the acts and rhetoric in charlottesville over the last 24 hours are unacceptable and must stop. right to free speech is not a right to violence. there's a response from the university of virginia and teresa sullivan who said those who gather to strike fear do not reflect the university's values. i'll also mention for viewers any facebook posts last night, the mayor of charlottesville, whose name is mike signer, i believe, the marches called a cowardly parade of hatred and intolerance. i'm going to go to richard first to get joan seethed. richard, this is, you know, the south has a history. a particular kind of history. home of thomas jefferson, the place where the rally last night happened was around a statue of thomas jefferson who founded the university. we haven't confronted the history of the civil war, the south? >> well, the vast majority of the people in the south do not support this kind of thing. do not sup

joining us, john phillips, kurt bardella. and here with me in new york, the great charles blow. john phillips, let me go to you first. you heard the boston police commissioner there and the superintendent who was phenomenal there talking about how everything turned out right. but the commissioner saying that 99.9% of the people there today for this protest were there were the right reasons. yet, the president's gut reaction, as we saw last week, his gut reaction is sometimes tone deaf. he talked about anti-police agitators. what happened to waiting for the facts, john? >> i don't know if you noticed this in any of your interactions with the president, be you he has a bit of an ego and considers himself to be a counter puncher. so the president turned the tv on and saw some signs unkind to him and saw some scuffles with the cops and that was the counter punch that came out. he watched more tv, saw the rally was relatively nonviolent. saw the mayor and police commissioner say everything was okay and you saw the subsequent tweets which i think were accurate and should be celebrated

you know, alex, you had the two best guests, richard paintinger and the former breitbart -- >> kurt bardella. >> -- fellow you had on. richard painter is plain talk and that's the real talk, plain talk, because we dealt with these guys up close. but usually we got the response from leaders like orrin hatch or anyone republican leader or the ones we worked with, united states attorneys, they didn't truck this stuff. they didn't put up with these guys. they put them down, arrest them, lock them up, get a warrant. there was no sympathy. there was no anything like that. now, you know, they're not condemned like they should be for their hate. this is what they do, they get stronger. they build up. they're loving this, alex. they are loving this. the white hate movement, neo-nazis, the klan, they love this. they dream and live for this day. and this is exactly what they want. this is exactly what they want. >> if they are looking for condemnation, that is certainly something they are getting from really all sides on this broadcast and pretty much i'm sure every other one, from officials and locals

joining me are sarah kinsior, former breitbart media consultant kurt bardella, former chief white house ethics lawyer for president george bush richard painter, and david corn of "mother jones." thank you for being here. kurt, to you first on what it means for not only bannon to have left but left the way he did. he walked over to breitbart.com and sort of walked into cheers and gave a big rah rah speech. what do you think it means to the white house he's no longer there? >> well, i think it means that you're going to see a lot more of steve bannon publicly than you have really to this point. lot of what's been happening in recent weeks and months is bannon under the radar, maybe leaking stuff or having people leak for him. he wasn't necessarily the public face of it. now he's unshackled. he's liberated. can he do and operate however he wants. remember, this is not a person who is meant to serve at the pleasure of anybody. he ran breitbart like a dictator. he is a dictatorial type of figure so it makes sense it didn't work well when he had to report to a chief of staff and run his ideas
