will burks kurt wagner joins us to talk about this more. you been very -- very busy covering both meta-and twitter your the start with meta-and get that out of the way. is meta-planning to lay off thousands of people this week? what do we know? >> the company is not confirming anything, but what mark zuckerberg said is they are planning for cuts. and this is something he has also told employees at an all hands meeting a few months ago that the company will look a lot smaller at the end of 2023 then it is right now and 2022. so all of those things seem to suggest that something like this is coming. obviously, i think they could learn a thing or two from what happened at twitter over the past week in terms of how not to handle a situation like this with employees and all the information that is shared. i imagine meta-will probably be a little bit more structured and whatever they ultimately end up doing, but it does feel like something like this is probably coming very soon. emily: let's talk about what is actually happening at twitter. you r

kurt wagner, critical, reporting on the latest twitter developments. where are these jobs going to come from? what do we know? >> it's companywide, not necessarily in any particular area. he has stressed that product and engineering seems to be where his focus is. it's possible that could be less impactful than something like policy, legal, things like that. but you know this is a part of his strategy to get the company into a better situation. right $44 billion for twitter, huge debt payments, interest payments they have to start paying off and a part of his plan is to cut headcount. emily: so how are twitter employees feeling right now? the acts is coming down on friday and no one knows if they will be cut yet? >> that's right hand out only that they haven't heard from any other leadership. right? everyone is talking with their managers mother has been no company about as companywide managers at all. the c-suite, all those folks were fire last week or early this week. if you are a twitter employee you are getting your information from other media out

ed: let's stick with the story and bring in kurt wagner, our social media reporter for more. to pick here. what happens if apple took twitter off the app store? i guess that is the place to start. kurt: sure. that is a pretty dramatic outcome, right? this would be that twitter is routinely allowing terrible content on the platform. usually apple reserves this for egregious violations. and so if this were to be the case, of course that is a huge blow to twitter. the app store is probably the main way, or one of the main ways most of its users get the app, get app updates. i believe the app which the work on my phone but in order to get an updated version, i have an iphone, i might have to figure out a way to download that from the web. it is the kind of thing that would erode over time and cause a lot of people to stop using twitter or possibly move to a different device. so that is a huge issue, and one of the reasons i tweeted that i think twitter needs apple a lot more than apple needs twitter here. that is because apple has the distribution at his fingertips. caroline: i w

i want to bring in bloomberg's kurt wagner, before we go further come what is happening with twitter's at products. there is talk of an advertiser boycott, elon musk has put the idea of a subscription. where do we stand right now? guest: everything is sort of where it last week, as you have mentioned there is some looming things that could be incredibly impactful. the first is this potential boycott. the idea that advertisers will say, we are not going to spend money on this platform unless you do certain things around speech or policing of speech. we saw that with facebook a few years ago emily, you you. remember. . it was a big deal, facebook was whether -- was able to weather the storm. they had someone talking to advertisers and senior leaders. all the senior leaders are gone, that is why i feel the advertising boycott of twitter could be dicey if that is the route some people go. they have been willing to do it before i would not be surprised if some the like that happens again. emily: in the meantime, twitter is grappling with the fact that advertisers are going some -- elsewhere

one that we hosted, then kurt wagner's social power hour.f any -- if anything, you see people on the platform but everyone still has a blue take. much of the new cycle is about content moderation, and authenticity and bots. what is your read on that side of the platform? >> it is interesting because we have this letter from cory booker urging the ftc to take a look at twitter. it's conduct with rolling out the twitter blue verify, which then elon rescinded and has talked about suspending for a couple more weeks. and how much chaos that unleashed where you had in person taters of president biden -- impersonators of president biden, other world leaders and eli lilly. prominent figures being spoofed on the platform. some of this was predictable. probably and -- eminently so. but elon has gotten as far as he has gotten by not listening to people. for a lot of his career, it has worked out well. i think there is going to be a lot of blowback from regulators as he tries to stream this out. caroline: we understand may be spanish and german governme
