who would permanently replace kwame brown after he resigned. voters elected council veteran phil mendelsohn who has been in the chairman seat on an interim basis. the one upset appears to have come in the d.c. council at large race. incumbent vincent orange will keep his seat but it looks like michael brown has lost his. he was beat by david grosso. >>> yvette alexander holds her seat in ward seven. and marion barry returns to the council to represent ward eight taking 87% of the vote in his race. >>> let's get the numbers on some of the d.c. council races right now if we can take a look at those perhaps. d.c. voters also, by the way, had some ballot amendments to decide on all stemming from recent ethic scandals that have plagued the d.c. government. >> all three amendments passed by an overwhelming majority. aamendment five will allow the council to kick out a member if that member has committed gross misconduct in office. >> amendment six will make it that a councilmember convicted of a felony will lose their seat. amendment seven does the s

council quchairman kwame brown. he resigned from the council back in june, you'll recall, and pleaded guilty to bank fraud charges in connection with a $200,000 in personal loans. he could be sentenced up to six months in prison for his crime. prosecutors wrote brown has accepted responsibility for his misconduct and has no prior criminal record. the actual sentencing by a federal judge is set for november 13th. >>> as election day nears, the district is trying to correct early voting problems. this past week voters were fuming and standing in long lines for hours. tom sherwood was out reviewing the changes taking place today, and here's that story. >> people want to vote. but long lines? not enough machines? well, at least things are better now. this long line in southeast washington saturday was just one of several polling places that were overwhelmed by voters anxious to cast ballots in this presidential year. too few voting machines for those who turned out. mayor vincent gray, who personally complained to elect

council chair kwame brown. he'll be sentenced in two different courtrooms for two different charges. first brown will learn his fate for a federal bank charge he pled guilty to in june and admitted he lied on applications to obtain bank loans. he faces up to six months in prison. prosecutors are asking the judge to sentence him to just six days in jail because he has been cooperative. brown will also be sentenced in superior court on a misdemeanor campaign violation. he faces up to six months behind bars on that charge as well. >>> four minutes after the hour. today the trial will begin for a bowie state university student charged with murdering her roommate. alexis simpson is accused o stabbing her roommate dominique frazier in september of last year. the two got into an argument over the volume of an ipod. simpson's attorney says she was acting in self-defense and shouldn't be charged with murder. >>> in about five hours, we expect d.c. to announce that more than a dozen schools will be closing for good. scho

kwame brown also given six months' home detention with a curfew from 10:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. the former chair won't talk to us, can you share with us how is he feeling? what's the disposition? >> oh wow. you know i mean he's obviously extremely disappointed. you know first in himself. and the situation that he finds himself in. and all it means. i mean he's really unhappy about this. absolutely. >> reporter: the 42-year-old former chairman of the d.c. council was also given 480 hours of visible commity service. after that he must serve two years supervised probation. >> that was bruce johnson reporting. meantime there was a startling development today in the case of the man police call the east coast rapist. that suspect aaron thomas had been expected to accept a plea deal today in prince william county but instead he changed his mind and told the judge he was not sure exactly what he was doing. thomas had been cooperated to pled guilty to -- expected to plead guilty to rape and abduction charges from 2009 but now the stage is set for a possible trial in january? prince willi

but first, the other news of the day, here's kwame holman. >> holman: former c.i.a.ector david petraeus denied today he gave classified information to the woman he had an affair with, paula broadwell. he spoke to cnn. that came as the c.i.a. announced an "exploratory" investigation of petraeus' conduct. his relationship with broadwell came to light during an fbi investigation that began last summer. today, attorney general eric holder defended the bureau's decision not to alert president obama and congressional leaders. >> we made the determination as we were going through the matter that there was not a threat to national security. had we made the determination that a threat to national security existed, we would of course have made that known to the president and also to the appropriate members on the hill. >> holman: that investigation also has led to a pentagon probe of the top u.s. commander in afghanistan-- marine general john allen. he's under scrutiny for extensive communications with a tampa, florida woman. allen has denied wrongdoing. defense secretary leon

here's kwame holman. >> holman: another army general, william "kip" ward, has been demoted for unauthorized expenses, and ordered to repay $82,000. the associated press reported today ward was accused of spending lavishly on travel and other items. ward is former head of u.s. africa command. the demotion strips him of a star, meaning he'll retire as a three-star lieutenant general. the u.s. army has wrapped up a hearing for a soldier accused of a massacre in afghanistan. staff sergeant robert bales is charged with killing 16 afghan civilians last march. most of the victims were children. the hearing took place at joint base lewis-mcchord, near seattle, washington. if the case goes to a court- martial and bales convied, he cou face the death penalty. some two and a half million people have been uprooted from their homes in syria by the raging civil war. the syrian arab red crescent made that estimate today. it's more than double the previous estimate used by aid agencies. in addition, more than 400,000 syrians have fled to neighboring states. it's been two weeks since hurricane sandy wallope

here's kwame holman. >> holman: some 150,000 people were in shelters in southern india today, after apical storm slammed ashore. at least six people were killed there, and in neighboring sri lanka. the storm brought heavy winds and rain, flooding streets and subway tunnels in the indian city of hyderabad. it also grounded an oil tanker with 37 crew on board. most were rescued, but five remained missing. in syria, rebels killed 28 government soldiers in a series of attacks in the northern part of the country. anti-regime activists said gun battles erupted at three military checkpoints surrounding the city of saraqeb in idlib province. the checkpoints line major supply routes to aleppo, the country's largest city and a major battleground. the ousted president of penn state university graham spanier will face cover-up charges in a child sex abuse scandal. prosecutors today filed counts of perjury, obstruction and failing to report suspected abuse. in addition, they added counts against athletic director timothy curley, and gary schultz, a former penn state vice president. the scandal rev
