[applause] >> good morning, all. it is my pleasure to welcome you on behalf of the partners and lawyers at my firm. we are in historic times. 34 years ago, i was privileged to help with the election and administration of the first african-american mayor of oakland. we continue to make history because today, i'm honored to introduce the first asian american woman as mayor of oakland, the first asian mayor of oakland, and the first asian- american woman elected as mayor of any major city in the united states. she and ed lee, the first asian american mayor of san francisco, make a rare and great hair. their selection indicates progress. slow progress, but progress nonetheless. our mayor is a woman of many firsts. she was the first asian-american woman elected to the open school board and the first to the oakland city council. but always first are the people that she serves. a 32-year oakland resident, she has dedicated her life to making government work for people. her experience and inspiration came from the civil and

both of our guests today, mayor edwin lee of the city and county of san francisco, and mayor gene kwan of the city of oakland. it is important to highlight the corporation. to give you a city that are for ever linked by earthquakes. with the bay bridge near its completion, these two individuals have been building their own bridges between many bay area communities. both have made significant strides toward moving toward resiliency in the face of earthquake hazards. we will hear from mayor lee first. as city administrator, he has been working with the department of the emergency management to oversee san francisco's disaster recovery and response effort, in gauging with many department to coordinate disaster operations. i also want to know mayor li has provided a lot of behind-the- scenes support for the recovery effort in new orleans, and i am sure this experience has prompted him to launch an innovative disaster recovery program that has evolved into the disaster resilience san francisco initiative. we applaud the mayor's ongoing efforts in his effort to implement the recommendations

is this the legacy of gene kwan beating perrata? >> there is that element of it. also because we don't have an incumbent running, at least said he's not going to run for election. so this is a chance for people to go in because of term limits. ex supervisors are looking for something to do. a couple of people in the race who don't have term limits. there's the city attorney, dennis herrera, and phil tinge, they don't have to worry about that. the state senator has to get out of the race. it's interesting to listen to what they had to say yesterday. it was a fairly narrow focus of what the debate was about. it was about service and community engagement, held at usc at the leo mccarthy center for service i think it's called. so there wasn't a lot of fireworks built into that. because is a politician going to say no, i don't want volunteers, no, i don't want people to be engaged in the community? that wasn't going to come out. but they touched on the budget. a couple of the candidates touched on pension reform, which really is going to be the hot-button issue in san

and just last week as i, along with mayor kwan and mayor chuck reed were being interviewed at the silicon valley leadership c.e.o. forum about technology, and about what our cities are doing in the region, there was david louie covering that information, that news, trying to highlight for the peninsula and the east bay and other communities in the bay area what our three mayors were doing. what we were doing with business, how technology was part of that. he's been the first minority elected chairman of the board of national academy of television arts and sciences in 1984. he's an emmy award winner of course. but more importantly, i think, is that he's used his position all these years and also as a member. asian-american journalists to promote others. that's really to me the key to success. when you get to a position of dignified contribution, you then open the doors for others. that's what i continue to aspire to in this position. so i want to thank the judges for putting forth david louie as a finalist. for janana hero. we've grown up with jan. evening magazine from the mid 1970's to t
