[applause] >> good morning, all. it is my pleasure to welcome you on behalf of the partners and lawyers at my firm. we are in historic times. 34 years ago, i was privileged to help with the election and administration of the first african-american mayor of oakland. we continue to make history because today, i'm honored to introduce the first asian american woman as mayor of oakland, the first asian mayor of oakland, and the first asian- american woman elected as mayor of any major city in the united states. she and ed lee, the first asian american mayor of san francisco, make a rare and great hair. their selection indicates progress. slow progress, but progress nonetheless. our mayor is a woman of many firsts. she was the first asian-american woman elected to the open school board and the first to the oakland city council. but always first are the people that she serves. a 32-year oakland resident, she has dedicated her life to making government work for people. her experience and inspiration came from the civil and

both of our guests today, mayor edwin lee of the city and county of san francisco, and mayor gene kwan of the city of oakland. it is important to highlight the corporation. to give you a city that are for ever linked by earthquakes. with the bay bridge near its completion, these two individuals have been building their own bridges between many bay area communities. both have made significant strides toward moving toward resiliency in the face of earthquake hazards. we will hear from mayor lee first. as city administrator, he has been working with the department of the emergency management to oversee san francisco's disaster recovery and response effort, in gauging with many department to coordinate disaster operations. i also want to know mayor li has provided a lot of behind-the- scenes support for the recovery effort in new orleans, and i am sure this experience has prompted him to launch an innovative disaster recovery program that has evolved into the disaster resilience san francisco initiative. we applaud the mayor's ongoing efforts in his effort to implement the recommendations

is this the legacy of gene kwan beating perrata? >> there is that element of it. also because we don't have an incumbent running, at least said he's not going to run for election. so this is a chance for people to go in because of term limits. ex supervisors are looking for something to do. a couple of people in the race who don't have term limits. there's the city attorney, dennis herrera, and phil tinge, they don't have to worry about that. the state senator has to get out of the race. it's interesting to listen to what they had to say yesterday. it was a fairly narrow focus of what the debate was about. it was about service and community engagement, held at usc at the leo mccarthy center for service i think it's called. so there wasn't a lot of fireworks built into that. because is a politician going to say no, i don't want volunteers, no, i don't want people to be engaged in the community? that wasn't going to come out. but they touched on the budget. a couple of the candidates touched on pension reform, which really is going to be the hot-button issue in san

we need this home for our history. >> reporter: the scenario is one of three floated by kwan to save the struggling city $58 million. but she hopes to avoid those cut ifs she can figure out a different solution. >> the scenario i would like is both the employees contribute and the city council puts a parcel tax on the ballot and it passes. >> reporter: at the same time, kwan says the city has already cut 500 jobs and 20% of city funds. >> there's really not a lot left. we have to now cut the services that we would never cut. >> reporter: community members are waging their own battle to keep the libraries and the museum open. members of code pink spent the day making signs for this evening's oakland city council meeting, where the budget will take center stage. >> even in 1929, the big depression, people kept their libraries open. it's so important for us to keep libraries open. >> the story of a city. just, this is like the evolution of oakland. >> reporter: five years ago, oakland avoided a plan to close one third of its libraries. now champions of the african-american museum hope t

. >>> oakland mayor jean kwan spoke with voters today about the parcel tax she is pubbing in an effort to deal with the p.m. multimillion dollars budget shortfall. the 0 he can observing residents gathered for her second to last promised town hall. the mayor acknowledged that voters are concerned about having to pay a proposed five- year $80 parcel tax. but she says it's necessary with the city facing a $58 million deficit. >> without the parcel tax we will be laying off another 300 people and closing the librairies and firehouses. and i don't think people want to do that. >> the oakland city council has not backed kwan's plan to hold a mail only ballot for the proposed parcel tax. the parcel tax would bring in an estimated $11 million a year for the fund. >> the army corp of engineers opened an emergency flood gate today in louisiana for the first time in nearly four decades. we watch now as water from the mississippi river rushes through the flood gate like a waterfall. the idea is to spare heavily pop lat -- populated areas like new orleans and baton rouge and funnel it to small com

i need to give you one warning about our mayor -- telling jean kwan that she cannot do something just makes her work harder to prove you wrong. before she speaks, and i actually bring her to the podium, we will hear a very short clip that presents a side of oakland that you may not be aware of. >> i think what makes it special is something called the music genome project. 15 musicians have work force for almost 10 years. they listen to songs one by one and analyze them along with 400 musical after this. that is how we power pandora. pandora is a technology company on the cutting edge in terms of utilizing the lead, but the underlying technology has helped handbill divide humans. we have to focus a lot of our efforts and energy on the modernization part of pandora, which is advertising. -- the modernization part of pandora. we have a website that draws users i am and causes them to click through and do all those things advertisers want. we also have invested heavily in our advertiser sales team. we have a lot of people who support the sales team to help put that forward. you can feel i

and just last week as i, along with mayor kwan and mayor chuck reed were being interviewed at the silicon valley leadership c.e.o. forum about technology, and about what our cities are doing in the region, there was david louie covering that information, that news, trying to highlight for the peninsula and the east bay and other communities in the bay area what our three mayors were doing. what we were doing with business, how technology was part of that. he's been the first minority elected chairman of the board of national academy of television arts and sciences in 1984. he's an emmy award winner of course. but more importantly, i think, is that he's used his position all these years and also as a member. asian-american journalists to promote others. that's really to me the key to success. when you get to a position of dignified contribution, you then open the doors for others. that's what i continue to aspire to in this position. so i want to thank the judges for putting forth david louie as a finalist. for janana hero. we've grown up with jan. evening magazine from the mid 1970's to t

. >> the mayor gene kwan is flying to china on an economic trade mission. he hopes to encourage more business connections and partnerships with china. she says that will generate jobs and investments in the city and wants to promote direct air service between oakland and chino. she is traveling with port of oakland officials. she says the port is paying for it and not taxpayers. >>> president obama is pleased with the latest jobs report. he says it shows the economy is resilient and can take a hit from challenges like rising gas prices and still keep going. 244,000 new jobs were added last month. the jobless rate went up from 8.8 to 9%, since people who had stopped looking for work decided to start again. >>> this happening right now, a search is underway for a 19- year-old college student from walnut creek. this is a live look from news chopper 2 of the command post for the search in the park. the last time anyone reports seeing james averyel was april 21st. the search be began yesterday and ended at dark. he might have been suicida when he disappeared. >>
