if you're traveling back home crop or meteorologist kyla grogan joins us with a look ahead.eah, there. so we are having a little bit cloudy run to start our year, but i think it feels appropriate after every one. >> kind of have the big celebration. last night we're easing on into the new year. let's take a look at the weather across the country. you can see where we were talking about before, how warm it was on the east coast. not the case anymore. now we're down into the 40's in new york city and you can see if you look at chicago, 27 degrees. that cold air is really taking a dive down. and we take a look at the country in total. you'll notice that cold air is helping to produce some of that lake effect. snow that's now rolling across parts of the northeast. so a very different profile than they had last week when we're looking at this very, very mild temperatures. meanwhile, the west coast, you can see there's some the know in idaho. so it's certainly a little bit of a system there. but we just had a few sprinkles in the north bay today. other than that pretty quiet day w

going to check in now with meteorologist kyla grogan. see what's happening yet to court to say no doubt about it. i feel little funny about that. i'm sure everyone else is to write because we know that our neighbors southern california are having such a rough ride, but we've got some beautiful skies out there. >> weather headlines for us. warm and sunny today. little bit breezy, but we did lose that wind advisory a little earlier than expected. so overnight tonight, our next stories are going to get really chilly. we got a little chilly last night. so get ready for it again tonight, a quiet pattern this week, though, and sunshine for everybody really throughout the week. return to cooler, albeit a more average temperatures as we get into the weekend. here's the wind right now. not bad fairfield, about 15 miles per hour, but notice that are offshore breeze has definitely diminished since this morning. what has not diminished, though? it is our chance for some cool temperatures overnight tonight got a frost advisory advisory. pretty much b

meteorologist kyla grogan here now with details on what happened. yeah, they got the unfortunate combination of having higher wind. right. so more devastating wind and then also far drier conditions. we talked about this yesterday. how. >> you know, san francisco got about 10 inches of rain since october first los angeles has gotten less than a quarter of an inch of rain. 2 huge difference. and that is unfortunately come together to make a very devastating situation in southern california. meanwhile, we're having a beautiful day here in northern california. our wind has calmed down. can see the highest number here. half moon bay about 12 miles per hour. so we are in a very different situation and thankful for that. as we take a live look here from our mount tam cam. we've got beautiful visibility today. it's just a banner day really taking a look at temperatures today. you know, about 60 threes about as highs we've gotten so far in san francisco. that's well above average. we should be about 57 this time of year. obviously nowhere near 79, which is

let's see how much longer it's going to stick around with kyla grogan. hey there. so we've got one little bit of rain coming through the overnight tonight. and then after that, i've got a dry forecast and some really nice temperatures to right now. the boy, it's all about the blue skies. gorgeous out there. look at half moon bay. pretty today. so many nice. this is. so i mentioned that we only have one shot of rain. this is the next 5 days. you can see that it it's overnight tonight into tomorrow and then we're done and we dry out for a little bit, which is a good thing in general. but we are going to see that we need more rain eventually, right? we can't stay dry for too long. but what's going to happen here as we get into our friday is this low pressure is going to dip down. that's going to bring some of that rain our way. but then after that pretty quickly, we'll see a ridge of high pressure developing. it starts off. and then it really strengthens. you see that kind of build up and you see that ridge become more pronounced and that's why we'll be staying dry. a

meteorologist kyla grogan here now with. >> details on what's happened. yeah.you know, all of that fire that's happening on southern california. that is bad side of offshore winds, kind of the upside of offshore wind is that we have gotten a lot of rain. so it's not as dangerous for us. so we are experiencing this some blue skies and warm temperatures and just some really nice conditions. and frankly, it's not just today that we're going to see these warm conditions. you can see as they roll through the rest of the week. we really don't cool it down again until we get to saturday. and even then it's just cooling it down to a couple of degrees above average. but today, so far proving to be quite a banner day as this high pressure takes hold here. you can see a few high clouds that are spilling over, making it into the bay area. but as we zoom out here, pretty pronounced high-pressure sitting right offshore. you see that ridge, that dome that is allowing us to warm up. and then of course, you also see the low pressure there over southern california that wind grad

meteorologist kyla grogan here now with details. once again, i say how lucky we are to have such beautiful weather today, despite the fact that we do have a little bit of wind out there. and you certainly see that as we have the flag flying there at half-staff. still honoring former president carter. but you can see that it is breezy. it is an offshore direction. temperatures today will be above average once again. we're already at 59 degrees in san francisco numbers higher than that in santa rosa. sitting now at 64 san jose not far behind you. there is 63 degrees. so a nice day on tap a we'll see those highs in those 60's rights which would be lovely mid-sixties for some in inland spots in the south bay and in the north bay. everybody nice low 60's around the bay itself. just beautiful. another beautiful day. we are breezy out there. it is that offshore direction. no doubt about it. you can see the wind gusts right now up to about 21 miles per hour. so that san francisco, we are under the wind advisory. this is just for the north b

meteorologist kyla grogan in the weather center now with details. yeah, there it is.eautiful day. no doubt about it. lots of sunshine. we certainly had a better morning as far as the sunshine making it in really quick this morning. >> this is our one sticking point. the wind that is picking up, it is offshore wind. so out of the north-northeast, you can see it there rolling 23 miles per hour. and these are sustained winds. so obviyusly gusting higher likely in spots. and that's in fairfield. 21 miles per hour in oakland about 12 in san francisco. we're going to see this kind of pick up more as we go throughout the day today. we are under that wind advisory. it does go through 10:00am tomorrow morning. so 20 to 30 mile per hour sustained winds that we're already starting to see in spots gusting up to 40, even 50 miles per hour. so it's possible that we see a few power outages. certainly possible things start blowing around. tree limbs can come down and that type of things. want to be prepared for this as we look for your future cast here, you see where these numbers ju

going to check in now with meteorologist kyla grogan. yeah. if you got a chance last night we had those clear skies to see the full moon. you get another chance tonight. it'll still be at 99% of its fullness. and tomorrow night, 97%. and i have to say we're going to have some nicely, mostly clear skies tonight and probably tomorrow night, too. but that does also mean we're going to see the temperatures get quite chilly when we get into tonight. so the overnight lows, the next couple of days, just look out for those. if you are in those inland valleys in particular, looking out for those 30's, that is kind of the trade off from the clear skies which are quite beautiful today as we take a live look from the east bay, you can see it's just gorgeous here. great visibility. and there's that golden gate in the distance. temperatures are pretty nice. san francisco about 60 degrees. we're at 64, though, in san jose. 62 in dublin, 59 up in sonoma. and you can see in berkeley about 59 degrees close to where we were just looking at that live picture of t

kyla grogan is here now with details. yeah, actually, we now have 6 of them. there is a new one, the lady of fire. and you can see it here. just 50 acres. i say just 50 acres because that small comparatively speaking to some of the other fires are dealing with. that's in the northern part of the angeles. >> for a schedule is national forest. but obviously the big fire here palisades fire over 15,000 acres. then we also have the eaton fire. that's the one that is in the hills behind pasadena. that is over 10,000 acres. and then, of course, the smaller fires that are around that the woodley fire also the all of us fire now that is over in and around near oxnard. so hurst fire now, 500 acres. it is a lot going on quickly and it has everything to do with the wind and thankfully not the temperatures. temperatures right now are war. 73 in los angeles. but that is not really the problem today. we don't have extreme temperatures. it's about the wind and these wind gusts. as you can see where some of the purples and the reds are. that's where those higher gusts are. as

let's check in now with meteorologist kyla grogan yet is beautiful today. no doubt about it. we've got another gorgeous day on tap and want to take it out of southern california where we did have, as you heard from the la county officials, a little bit of a pullback in some of the wind. >> that is unfortunately going to be short-lived, as you can see, as we work our way into the afternoon and evening, we are going to see this wind kind of pick up again, then pull back a little bit as we get into our friday now. watch what happens. >> as we head towards the weekend. so this is your saturday now and you start to see some of this when rolling again now important to point out, not as extreme as it has been, but obviously not helpful for firefighters today will also be a warm day. los angeles looking out to be up into the upper 70's today. temperatures, of course, at this time of year are really the biggest issue. but it does kind of combine with what's going on with the wind to drop those humidity levels. and that's why they are under that red flag warning does go through thursda

meteorologist kyla grogan is with us with the latest kyla. yeah, that's right. so unfortunately, today's been a very difficult day firefighters. this is one of those days when you're not trying to >> really get containment. you're trying to hang on to what you already have. because of that offshore wind, that will be the case. again tomorrow. having said that, once we get into thursday, that's what it looks like. they see some improvement. you can see the red flag warnings. they go all the way now from basically interior portions of the central part of the state heading down into southern california and right on down to the border. and it's all because of this wind that just won't give it a break. and this is now the dangerous area that was talking about yesterday, ventura county and also western la county until 06:00pm on wednesday. that is the timing for when they are finally going to start to see some of this wind relent. what's happening right now is high pressure has moved right on top of low-pressure. so that creates the wind gradient right there. you see

meteorologist kyla grogan with us now as we look live at the fires and the smoke, kyla is just horrific. it is horrific and it is all about the santa ana winds, which you can see where some of these brighter colors on the map showing that things are just unfortunately still really in full effect with that wind. >> now you can see the flag warning. it is all the way from santa barbara is right on down to san diego. as we zoom in here, you can see where some of these fires are in and around la county and this red flag warning does go until 6 o'clock on thursday. so let me show you what's going to happen with the winds over the next 24 hours. now, some good news we're going to see things get better as we go into the evening. you see those numbers start to go down and that will be the case as they go into the overnight and even start tomorrow morning. unfortunately, what happens in the afternoon that wind starts rolling off shore again. more of a santa ana kick happens. it's not quite to the degree that they've seen in the last 24 hours, but it does mean it will make it more difficult for f

kron 4 meteorologist kyla grogan here with us to brighten things up right. yeah. you know, we got a little sunshine in there with a great kind of making its way back. and you can see a live look here at the golden gate bridge. will you have to trust out for now is wind. you can things are relatively calm right now, but we are going to see a turn to offshore wind. and that's going to happen because we've got low pressure with qatar, clockwise circulation, high pressure with clockwise circulation. those 2 are going to come together as this inside slider happens. meaning low pressure slides the inside of california that produces offshore wind normally when we have fire season, this is what we get into trouble. now. you can see what's happening in southern california. they haven't had the rain that we have had to. they have dry brush that is still out there. and there may be under a red-flag warning starting tomorrow, as you can see, all the way from santa barbara, right on down to san diego. not the case here. we are going to have wind advisories but we are not under

and meteorologist kyla grogan is here. no details on what they're up against. yeah, that's right.when you look at, you know, what's going to happen in today with some of these fire fights that go on, you look at a couple things. number one, how drier with the drought monitor showing the central and southern california, obviously. >> quite dry. comparatively speaking to northern california, you look at the wind, both the northern and southern california experiencing offshore wind. but southern california seeing more intense you can see that in those colors. and then, of course, relative humidity levels. so that is how dry is the air and the darker the color is the more dry the air is. and certainly again, once again, you see in southern california, they are incredibly dry because of this offshore wind that keeps rolling. it dries things out. so traditionally you start to see high pressure on the other side. the sierra, when you have santa ana winds, just explain to kind of where this comes from and what they do is they build and then it rushes down the mountains. and when it rushes

meteorologist kyla grogan here and you are looking support that is being flown in right now to help fight these fires. the newest fire, the kenneth fire now sitting at 50 acres. this is near calabassas, a residential area. lots of homes here, obviously very dangerous situation right now. and this has just broken out in the last, you know, about hour hour and a half. and they are trying to get some containment on that before it gets out of control. just to show you where this is kenneth fire calabassas is the area. this is right near 101. that's a little bit to the west of topanga canyon. if you're familiar with la, obviously not terribly far from the very large palisades fire that you see here that is now over 17,000 acres. we also have the eaton fire. that is the one that is out in the hills back behind pasadena, that one over 10,000 acres, not to mention the other fires that we've got going on. one right in la proper there. the sun set fire. so it has been a very difficult day. they have had a little bit of help today from the wind and that it has ramped down a touch today. it's not as

kyla grogan in the weather center with details on what's going yeah. beautiful blue skies out there today and slightly warmer temperatures to take a live look here at the golden gate bridge. you can see just how pretty it is. little bit of a breeze out there. but temperatures have popped up. and if you can see if you look up in the north, they were about 7 degrees warmer than we were this time yesterday. he had over fairfield 8 degrees warmer. but across the board, we are running a few degrees up and you see that here is we're already kind of flirting with that 60 degree, mark. in fact, we just hit it there in san jose now sitting at 60 degrees or 57 in san francisco and santa rosa about 58 in concord. so you get the idea we're getting a little warmer. we've got some nice sunshine out there. but once you take a look at stormtracker 4, you kind of zoom out here. you notice there's a little bit of rain to the north that's getting ready to start to roll our way, although won't be until the overnight tonight. let's talk about these temperatures. first high

kyla grogan here too. >> let us know with we can deal with. yes, been a bit of a week. great. so we're going to head into the weekend with some blue skies and some warm temperatures out there. want to take a minute to talk about the warm temperatures. yesterday we hit 78 in santa rosa. i think it was this broadcast right here. we're talking about this yesterday. that was not a record, but it was a record of redwood city, a daily record. at least it's 75 degrees. concord, san jose at 73 sfo tied a record at 71. >> oakland beat a daily record at 70. you get the idea was warm out there. 70 livermore too. we are warm again today. not that warm, right? so no 78 degrees up in santa rosa right now. they're at 62 very different story. 59 san francisco were pulling back right now. 67 in san jose henry speight concord about 65. so we did it. a few 70's there in the south bay. and we do have that sunshine that is out there. no doubt about it. as we zoom out, though, want to show you this big picture because i mentioned that we've had this when grade-a between high and low pressure all we

meteorologist kyla grogan here. now details on what's going on outside. yeah, actually, we picture fog advisoryofor the north bay that lasted till just 2 o'clock. but now that he's been >> taken down as well. but now we have to contend with this. our beach hazard statement that is out and that is because between now and tuesday afternoon at about 4 o'clock, we are expecting this west-northwest swell to come in and that could produce a very high risk of sneaker waves. that's probably the biggest danger from this. but we could see waves breaking up to about 20 feet possible. so obviously the advice here is to never turn your back on the ocean. so it's because this well, as moving in this west-northwest swell, when you look out here, you can actually see where these brighter colors are. that is this? well, that is where the higher wave heights are right now. and they are moving towards us now. right now, things relatively not too bad, relatively calm about 7 feet in height. you can start to see if you take those looks outside at the ocean that, you know, thi

meteorologist kyla grogan here with details on what's going hey, there into those of you dealing with. i want to say that, yes, there is some sunshine out there and you can see it here in san jose. we're seeing some of that sun break through. >> temperatures there kind of reflecting that. we're a little bit warmer. san jose right now at 62 degrees where as you can see as you head to concord about 51 degrees and head up to the north bay, we're finally starting to get a little bit of a lift there. temperatures. but santa rosa still just at 50 san francisco at 52. so we have this west-northwest swell that's coming in. and unfortunately, that is kicking up some coastal danger. so the weather service has put out with a colleague beach hazard statement to let you know that there is exceptionally dangerous surf. we could see waves breaking up to about 20 feet. sneaker waves. i think that's probably the biggest threat with this. one of those are the waves, the kind of come up out of nowhere and can sweep you off your feet into very cold water. so the advice is never turn your back on the ocea
