chris kyle's truck. and they were making their way out in the middle of nowhere out to this large facility out in the country that had this gun range on it. and that's when ralph told one of the psychiatrists that interviewed him, a psychiatrist incidentally that was a witness for the defense that he started smelling weird things on that truck ride there, and that he had this perception that the two men, kyle and littlefield, were not talking to him on this long truck ride. and that he was getting intimidated. and that he was feeling that something wasn't quite right. and so that was the argument that they tried making, is that once they got to the range, that routh perceived chris kyle and chad littlefield as a threat. and that is why he acted the way he acted. but the prosecution did a very good job of pointing out inconsistencies in some of his stories. because all of that information that i just said was according to what routh told a psychiatrist that was hired by the defense. but the prosecution sa

the first witness was tea kyle chris kyle's widow. trial rules we can broadcast the video of her testimony but no sound. even without words, it was emotional as the mother of two choked up and wiped her eyes as the courtroom was shown pictures of her husband. chris kyle is known as a hero who as a sniper watch over his troops in iraq and as a civilian reached tout those who like himself struggle with the aftermath of war. a life so remarkable it would become a hollywood hit. but that's what's happening in the case of american sniper chris kyle. we know who killed kyle. the only question is why. here's mark strassmann. >> reporter: eddie ray routh a 27-year-old former marine, has been diagnosed with p.t.s.d., a major depressive disorder, schizophrenia, and paranoia. at this texas gun range two years ago he shot and killed chris kyle of "american sniper" fame and his friend chad littlefield. kyle was shot six times littlefield seven. prosecutor alan nash insisted that routh should be held accountable. >> mental illnesses, even the ones that this defendant may or may not have don't deprive people from the ability to be good citizens to know right from wrong. >> i got a military-age male. >> reporter: the blockbuster movie "american sniper" tells kyle's story. the navy seal had 160 confirmed kills in iraq. the most in u.s. military history. after the war, kyle counseled troubled vets like routh. hend littlefield met routh for the first time when they drove him to the gun range and right away defense lawyer tim moore says, they sensed routh's issues. >>

this is kyle's widow, taya kyle. she was the prosecution's first witness on the stand yesterday. she tearfully recounted the last conversation she had on the phone with her husband just before he was allegedly shot and killed by routh at a gun range. taya said, quote, it was very short and it wasn't short like, hey, you're interrupting a good time. it was short like i wish i could say more but i'm not going to because there were people around. we were in the court for this morning's testimony. anything new this morning? >> reporter: well, we've heard from today is a lot of talk kind of describing the crime scene and the weapons that investigators found out there. remember, chris kyle and his friend chad littlefield had brought eddie routh to a countryside gun range to bond and speak with him. that is something chris kyle had aump done. according to chris kyle's wife, they would go out to these gun ranges, being around in that atmosphere, bonding, doing guy things, if you will, was something cries kyle found was helpful to do with other veterans that were struggling. the testimony

taya kyle was the first witness, the wife of kyle.one conversations she had while he was at the gun range. she detailed one conversation where she says chris kyle sounded irritated like there was something going on. he couldn't talk very much. she definitely sensed some sort of tension on the phone line as she spoke with him but he ended the call and she just expected that they would talk about it once he returned from the gun range but, of course that wouldn't happen. taya kyle offering extremely emotional testimony as she recounted the life of chris kyle his work in the military his work that he says -- she says inspired her husband so much in helping other veterans who were going through mental health issues and issues of ptsd and that's what you know some of the things that he loved to do and found great solace in after he had left the military. very emotional testimony from her part yesterday as well carol. >> what's on tap for today, ed? >> reporter: well the prosecution will continue its case. they went through most of the day
