the investigation beginning after 24-year-old kyle mullen died just hours after finishing the grueling course last february. "the new york times" says in the course of the investigation, the navy "discovered syringes and performance-enhancing drugs in his car," and later "discovered about 40 candidates had either tested positive, or had admitted using steroids or other drugs in violation of navy regulations." mullen's autopsy concluded he died from bacterial pneumonia and did not have drugs in his system at the time of death. his mother regina mullen adamant that while he'd considered it, he did not use drugs. >> it could have been from the other men that he was hanging out with, unfortunately. >> reporter: the navy s.e.a.l. trainees have a far higher death rate than other special operations forces, and now the investigation into alleged drug use is one more demoralizing and dangerous development. the navy will have a final report out this fall that looks not only at drug use, but all of the circumstances of kyle's death. but they have increased drug testing since then and hope to have
