kylie, where does this leave the peace talks? >> reporter: that is the million-dollar question right now because we have not heard from u.s. officials in the trump administration what the preconditions are for restarting these talks. we know that secretary pompeo made it clear yesterday that the u.s. feels that they can get back to the table with the taliban if the taliban show that they're able to uphold commitments that they have discussed across from u.s. officials in these meetings in doha. but president trump is now involved. as sarah said, he's grown frustrated with the talks in recent weeks and he was told by those who are close to him including senator graham and his national security adviser bolton that the taliban being given too much leverage so does that mean that what the u.s. had agreed to is off the table now and start at ground zero? that is something that the u.s. officials who are working tirelessly on this effort are going to have to work towards. but the reality here is that the taliban does feel that they are

i want to bring in cnn national security reporter kylie atwood. what's the basis for the subpoena? >> we knew this was coming. these committees asked the state department repeatedly over the last few weeks for documents related to the state department dealings with ukraine. the state department didn't pass over the documents to the committees and said if they didn't get the documents requested, they would subpoena the secretary of state, mike pompeo. that's exactly what they're doing today. it is interesting, however, that the state department has remained largely silent, even though we know that pompeo himself is frustrated by what rudy guiliani, the president's personal lawyer has been saying. the state department has not said anything more on the record about its personnel and what they have been doing with regard to ukraine. now, pomds was asked about this briefly when reporters caught him in new york on the sidelines of the u.n. general assembly. he said everyone to his knowledge at the state department had acted entirely appropriately. the keyword is to his knowledge. were th

cnn's kylie atwood also has information about his involvement with ukraine. what have you learned?'s right. what we have learned is that rudy giuliani was actually joked about by ukrainian officials to u.s. officials in early july. now, that was before president trump had his conversation, his phone call with president zelensky. and it was during a meeting in which zelensky was referencing how complicated it could be when lawyers get involved. this conversation between zelensky and u.s. officials at the state department was more focused on what the u.s. wants ukraine to be doing, to be tackling corruption within its country, to be discussing how it can be interacting with russia in a more productive way. but he did reference giuliani in this joking manner. then we fast forward a few weeks after that phone call with president trump and president zelensky. and that is when it was the ukrainian officials that came back to the u.s. officials and asked to be connected directly with giuliani. obviously they had changed their position. they weren't joking about it anymore. they had taken

i want to go now to cnn's national security reporter kylie at wood. what are you learning? this is a fascinating development. >> reporter: it is because it comes just the day after john bolton was ousted as national security adviser. we are learning that administration officials are considering the possibility of giving secretary of state mike pompeo, an ally of the president, two hats. he would assume the role as national security adviser to the president, and he would remain secretary of state. now, this has happened before, but it was back in the 1970s when president nixon was in office and henry kissinger was both secretary of state and national security adviser for two years. now, what's unclear right now is how seriously president trump is considering this possibility because he told reporters at the white house today that there were five people who wanted this job as national security adviser, and they were good and qualified people. so we don't know where he is right now, but this is something that is being discussed at the white house. >> is this more about secreta

and kylie, let me start with you. what are you hearing from the trump administration about any evidence or any next steps? >> that is right. so president trump just announced that secretary of state mike pompeo is going to be making a trip to saudi arabia. that is something new. we didn't know that. we've asked the state department when this trip is going to take place. we don't know. but he said that the secretary of state would be going with other u.s. officials to essentially sit down with saudi arabia and discuss what the u.s. has here and what saudi has in terms of intelligence. i think it is important to note, however, that it was pompeo who overthe weekend came out first and said that iran was to blame for this attack. and also called on all nations to condemn iran for doing this. and then we heard president trump sort of rolling back the rhetoric there, saying that we believe we know who the culprit is and calling on other nations, not to come out necessarily and make this condemnation, but it is secretary of
