cnn's kyung lah at the maricopa county election center in phoenix. kyung?eporter: well, we just got these just a short time ago, paula, just seconds ago. the maricopa county vote drop it is about 98,000 ballots. it's the largest one. what we can tell you is that katie hobbs still maintains her lead over kari lake. she is maintaining a lead of about 48,000 votes. now, that margin is tighter. it is smaller than it was here in maricopa county versus the last report. the last report had that margin at about 57,000. now it's 48,000. so lake does advance, makes that margin a little bit tighter, but hobbs maintains her lead. what we are now told by maricopa county, and we're doing some loose math here is that they have just under 100,000 ballots left. so not that many ballots left, 100,000. they are moving very, very rapidly here now that the processing has been done. they simply have to tabulate that. they anticipate that they will get through the large bulk of these ballots by tomorrow night. so tomorrow night they are going to have another vote release, but rig

our correspondent kyung lah is in arizona. kyung, we expect new votes from arizona very soon.>> and by very soon, it could be any minute from now, wolf, in this hour. and we anticipate should it be very, very soon. the second largest county here in arizona, pima county will be releasing more election results, about 10,000 ballots expected. and then in two hours, this county that i'm in, maricopa county will be releasing even more election results. we are told that it will be in the range of about 62,000 votes, if not greater. they anticipate it will be greater. but that number has been moving as they work through all of these ballots. those ballots from friday night, saturday, and sunday -- excuse me, saturday night, sunday, and monday. these are ballots, early ballots before election day. and so those are going to be a part of the results that we get tonight. and every single night we're going to expect about the 60,000, 70,000 range to be released nightly here from maricopa county. it is a slow process. they have to signature verify. they are mandated by state law to follow

this is it, kyung said.his is maricopa county, obviously pertaining specifically to the governor's race in that context. what are you watching for in arizona tonight? >> number one, if you look at the map here, two uncalled governor's race, one is alaska, rank choiced voting, second and choice of the candidates below 50%. the other one is arizona. what am i looking for, how many votes do we get out of maricopa county and out of pima county and is that enough to make a projection? if you look at the result right now with kyung, katie hobbs is ahead by 24,719 votes, kari lake at 49.5 and hobbs apt 50.5. when the new votes come in statewide, kari lake needs to probably get 55%, 57% somewhere in that ballpark so when we get the big major drop of votes from maricopa county, the largest outstanding batch of votes still to be count, when we get those, is kari lake running anywhere near that numbers. that's where it matters most. getting 48% in maricopa count toe 52 for katie hobbs. kari lake has to be closer to 55%

kyung lah is on the scene for us. this is an important round of counting votes we're about to see in the next few minutes, right? >> reporter: very important round of votes. we're expecting 80,000, approximately 80,000 votes to be released. that information is highly anticipated here, especially by republican nominee blake masters for u.s. senate and the reason why is because blake masters campaign believes that in this bach can potentially be their path and still refreshing my screen here because we're anticipating that nithese numbe should be coming out at any moment. why do they believe these numbers could be so critical for them? because what this bach is more than half, the majority of these ballots will be those mail in ballots that were dropped off on election day. the anticipation from the masters campaign, as well as from republican nominee for governor kari lake is that these will be in their favor. these are republican votes. voting patterns have changed significantly here in the state of arizona from 2018

you just heard from arizona from kyung, let's go to arizona, where kyung is. -- if you remember the dynamicst kept shrinking. he won the state in the end but as the -- ballots came in. the key is what happens as we go forward and david laid out the percentages in nevada. we have the percentages for our zone as well so we have to watch this play out. it's a vital state. and obviously a vital race, a democratic incumbent facing a challenger from a trump endorsed republican there. it's critical to the 50 50 balance we currently have in the senate. where will it end up? then quickly, in nevada, this is where gary is. he's in clark county. it's 75% to 74% of the state that's voted, and the question is, can catherine cortez masto improve that percentage as more and more votes coming in? that's what she needs to overcome. one of the key question there is, can she turn washoe. washoe county where reno is, and the rural areas to the north, that's a swing county. usually, the color of this county in the and candid herman who wins the state. laxalt with a slightly there right now, again, -- to be count

kyung, what's the latest there?> reporter: i'm looking down at my phone because we're just getting responses from the campaigns. i want to start by saying the kari lake campaign has not really said anything to reporters. and that's an unusual pattern. most nights, there has been confidence. they have given us an indication that they still think they're going to win. the latest that we're hearing is that they're going to wait. they're going to wait and see. we are seeing a statement that katie hobbs -- she is the democrat -- that she has just posted on twitter, saying that they believe with this latest tabulation result, that katie hobbs is the unequivocal favorite to become the next governor of arizona. that's a bit of confidence, given that these numbers are still really out there. what we saw tonight are 98,000 votes that were released by maricopa county. this is the most populous county in the state of arizona. the county says that they have about 85,000 to 95,000 votes left. that is -- those are votes that the l

kyung, what's the latest? >> the very latest vote count that we're getting from maricopa county, which is, and i just want to point this out to people, if you're just joining us, maricopa county is the largest county in the state of arizona, often, you have to win in maricopa if you want to win in the state. that's why we are here. that's why the candidates pay so much attention to it. and, tonight, this latest batch, we did see kari lake do slightly better. but she needed to do even better, according to people from within her campaign. and so, what we see right now coming out of maricopa county is that katie hobbs, the democrat, remains at 51%. kari lake is at 49%. that is very close. but then, you size that up through the state, and those numbers that continue to show that katie hobbs remains in the league. we are hearing from a source from within the kari lake campaign, someone we've been talking to for many days, who characterizes tonight a vote dump that the lake campaign had been riding on to break in th

nadia romero is in atlanta, kyung lah is in phoenix, but we begin with rosa glor rflores in vegas. >> reporter: stakes were high, but in the end the democratic incumbent prevailed. catherine cortez masto gets to stay as the senator from the state nevada and with that, the democrats get to keep and maintain control of the u.s. senate. here is how it all went down. the republican adam laxalt was in the lead for days. and then on saturday evening clark county released a batch of about 23,000 votes and here is how those votes were divided. cortez masto receiving about 14,000 of those votes or 60% of the vote, laxalt received more than 8,000 votes or about 35% of that batch. now, that put cortez masto in the lead and cnn called the race at that point about in time. her campaign taking to twitter saying, quote, what did people get wrong about this race. first latina senator knows her community better than anonymous sources, she knows how to work with working families, and former ag and crime attacks couldn't stick. again, the democrat here cortez masto keeps her seat as stays as senator of

first i want to go to arizona where kyung lah is keeping a close eye on a race that is too early to call. you've been keeping your eye on lots of race there is in arizona, but now it seems to be coming down to this big governor's race. right now democrat katie hobbs has a slight lead over republican opponent kari lake. i suppose there's a good chance that lake will cut into that margin somewhat, but perhaps we will have some kind of a call this evening. what do you think? >> reporter: it's really difficult to tell, jim, because we just simply don't know what these ballots are going to say quite yet. the margin is quite tight and as you say it is simply too early to call. katie hobbs, the democrat, she is leading just under 34,000 votes, that is what is separating these two candidates, and the path that you are talking about, jim, what the kari lake campaign, a source within the kari lake campaign says this is the path, the mail-in ballots that are dropped off on election day and this process is still continuing here in maricopa county. i do have a bit of an update. we are hearing from el

kyung lah, cnn, phoenix. >> reporter: u.s. senate race in nevada is so close. mail ballots still need to be counted. where reno is located, there are with 11,000 ballots still to be counted. and douglas county in western nevada, population 50,000, and it is very republican, that county hasn't elected a president -- a democratic president since before world war ii. they have about 2,000 ballots outstanding. but this is the big prize, this building behind me, this is the clark county election department, clark county is where las vegas is. about three quarters nevadians live in this county. there are still 23,000 mail in ballots to count. and an additional 15,000 ballots are provisional ballots or ballots that need to be cured. what that means, some people don't put their signature on the ballot. as long as they do, it then gets counted. so that is a total of 38,000 more ballots. so still a lot of counting do in this race that is very tight. gary tuchman, cnn, las vegas. >>> and political analyst josh rogin is joining us now from washington, a columnist for the "

kyung lah in arizona with the latest. >> reporter: maricopa county out with their latest report. there are about 85 to 95,000 remaining ballots to be counted in the most populous county in the state of arizona, in the hotly contested governor's race here in the state, democrat katie hobbs maintains a very slim lead over republican kari lake. now this is a hotly contested race with accusations from republican lake saying that there is something going wrong with the count taking place here in this county. election officials in maricopa have pushed back strongly, saying if anything, they are moving at a faster rate than they have in other elections. what is so important about this information that we got, this latest election report from the county is that the lake campaign views this batch of votes as her path. it is a path that continues to narrow, especially with this latest report. in addition to the 85 to 95,000 remaining ballots that need to be counted, there is also about 8300 ballots that are still having to be cured. so while the rhetoric continues, the count here in this c

cnn's kyung lah is there with the latest. it's the governor's race that everyone is really zeroed in on there right now. it's still too early to call, but today, republican kari lake continues to question the whole process because it's taking too long in her view? >> yeah. that's essentially what she's saying. but let's talk about exactly what the state of play is here on this vote count. there are 34,000 votes, approximately 34,000 votes separating republican kari lake from democrat katie hobbs. right now, the vote count state-wide is showing hobbs is just slightly ahead of lake. but as you indicated, fredricka, this is too early to call. so what is taking place right now? here in maricopa county, which is the most populous county in the state of arizona, it's diligent process. the count is taking place. it is a slower process because of the amount, the volume of mail-in ballots that were dropped off on election day. we are anticipating that that will be a large part of what is released this evening. the county expecting abo

cnn's kyung lah is inside the maricopa county election center in phoenix. when do we expect the next update on vote totals? >> reporter: in just about four hours, jake, we're anticipating that maricopa county will release another batch of votes in that 6:00 p.m. local time, 8:00 p.m. eastern time hour, and this is a critical batch of votes. the lake campaign knows they need to over perform at a good clip in order to stay in the game. meanwhile, what is happening here at the county is that the counting is still continuing. they're going through these votes, curing the ballots, adjudicating any questions on these blallots and we are for te first time hearing some outward confidence from katie hobbs, her campaign. the campaign posted on twitter last night after those vote tallies from maricopa county, quote, katie has led since the first round of ballots were counted, and after tonight, meaning sunday night's results, it's clear that this will be not change. we are also hearing from democrats who are projected to win here in the state of arizona, and they are

kyung lah is with us. protesters have gathered outside where ballots are still being counted. i know there's figures on the right there in arizona whipping up some of this stuff. what's going on? what can you tell us? >> well, let's start with where the work of democracy is going on. these are people we have seen work, jim, 14, 18 hours a day diligently counting through. what is happening outside has been described as a vigil. from what i can tell from what we see outside. it's a few dozen people. i've been very glad that the people who are being careful and following state law can hear what is going on outside, con sp con spear tal lies. the work of democracy is still going. we are expecting more of the vote count later this evening. approximately 75,000 to 80,000 will be released tonight. giving us more clarity about the still contested governor's race. as far as the u.s. senate race, you have, as we indicated, that has been called biy cnn. we project mark kelly will hold onto the democratic seat. and he did this morning go and speak to supporters and thanked them for that s

cnn's kyung lah has lights from phoenix. >> they're in maricopa county the tedious work of democracy continues. counting the vote. hanging in the balance is controlled the u.s. senate. some 78,000 votes results were released this evening by maricopa county. it didn't change the races all that much, percentage wise. the democrats are currently on a razor thin lead. a razor thin lead. they just got just a bit more vote pad. at this is a slow process and it is a careful process. what we're hearing though, on the edges. are some of the republicans, it's -- some of these election officials. might be doing this on purpose. releasing this slowly. on purpose. and we got strong pushback by election officials here. >> frankly it is offensive for care like to see that these people behind me are slow rolling this. when they're working 14 to 18 hours. so i really hope this is the end of that, we could be patient, and respect the results when they come out. >> the count continues, the election is not over and maricopa county. election officials are looking to start to zoom in on some of those elec

kyung lah was there.you tell us. >> reporter: this created quite a law enforcement response. this is something they had been expecting just to have protesters show up at some point, but that it was happening during this particular vote count echoed back to 2020 when they had an enormous amount of protesters show up and at one point some of them got into this building. the sheriff did respond quite strongly. because this vigil, protest, whatever you want to call it, really came about because of prominent figures, both political and elected, who called for it to take place. listen to what the sheriff told reporters just a short time ago. >> you call on something and suddenly you see the crowd summoned and you think you're almighty oz. guess what? at some point in time we have to address this issue and we pull the curtain on you and you're just back there. be thoughtful. don't treat this like it's just a show. it's bigger and more important than that. recognize there's real people back here doing a job and t

kyung lah. let's bring in some commentators. joe, every vote trickling in here matters. rest in peace to all of those folks out there who thought their vote doesn't matter. that claim doesn't hold up anymore. we're down to potentially single digits in some of the races outstanding. how are democrats feeling at the moment right now, that they have got in arizona, and potentially closing the gap here in nevada? what do you think? >> i think democrats are feeling pretty confident right now. jim, as we talked about leading up to the election, this was an impossible election to model. we didn't know who was going to turn out. and that's why a lot of the narrative i think was wrong, about predicting this red wave. the reason democrats are confident is the voters it seems have taken the longer-term protecting my rights, protecting democracy, protecting the right to abortion, versus the shorter term economic issues like infl inflation. as you look forward, that is very good news for democrats and bad news for republicans because these issues are going to remain. the supreme cour
