our reporter kyung lah is at the scene now., what are you -- what are you seeing there this morning? >> reporter: well, i can tell you that this entire college town -- and this is, christi, a very typical college town. i'm looking at 7-elevens and various pizza shops, coffee shops, a very typical college town -- there is police tape strewn back and forth across the streets here. it's zigzagging. there are a number of scenes. i see police officers and sheriff's deputies, just counting from where i'm standing, looks like they're covering several different corners here, because we're talking about a series of shootings. this all started at 9:27 last night, friday evening, here at the university of -- u.c., santa barbara. kids are filling the streets at this time of the day. they're getting ready to go out. they're out at the pizza shops. out at the coffee shops. and that's when all of the firing, the shooting began. the suspect vehicle zigzagging its way across, through this very busy area. and that's -- when you're standing here

joining me right now is kyung lah. kyung?> reporter: it is very important to note, anderson, that this entire rampage, when the bullets began to fly, it was only ten minutes. and that is what is stunning. that so much devastation to take place in that short of time. the killer winding his way up and down very busy streets, 9:30 on a friday evening, unloading his weapon, reloading, and then taking aim at people he simply did not know. he went to a sorority, a deli, outside a 7-eleven. he tried to hit as many people as possible and so many people, anderson, have been affected. you see the stadium behind me. there is a vigil happening right now. it is packed with people who are trying to remember the good in people, trying to remember the victims, and looking forward to trying to pick up the pieces as a community. anderson? >> yeah, kyung, the memorial that is happening now, i mean, we've seen literally thousands of people attending this. any idea of the total number and i know that christopher's father spoke at the memorial jus

cn th's kyung lah is there. she obtained the exclusive video only on cnn. watching part of it. we're not watching the worst part. walk us through it. >> it's simply too gruesome to look at at the owner of i.v. deli, who gave us the video, this is his surveillance video, and there are mumt. angles of it, you can see the moment when one of the victims, uc student christopher micha michael-martinez walks in and is shot. it's really frightening. what it givens you a sense of what is actually happens there, you can see the bullets hitting the -- one of the windows, one of the coolers that you open to get drinks. you can see it shattered. you can see people crouching in fear. you get a sense houf frightening it was and how many bullets were actually use. there were a number of bullets. when we walked through the store you can see bullets and shattered parts of the county as well. it's really extraordinary because it sort of gives you a picture of the violence that these people lived through. >> right. and interesting also, for our viewers, if you look at the top

i want to bring back cnn's kyung lah. obtained a pretty gruesome though fascinating piece of video which shows the movements of the car as it made its way down the street. describe it for us again. >> reporter: the video is surveillance video inside a store as the shooting took place. the gunman aiming into the store. yo do not see the vehicle. but what you see inside is extraordinarily graphic. you see a young man getting shot, bleeding all over the floor. it is so gruesome we simply cannot air that part of the video. but you get the sense of how frightening it was inside that store. that's just one of a number of places where there have been cordoned off scene areas. the police at one point said that there were nine active scenes, crime investigation spots, and that's where they were collecting bullets. there were a number of bullets collected earlier in the day. the area right behind me, that was cordoned off. there were some 20 bullets just in this one small area, so it really paints a picture of how many time this gu

all right, kyung lah thank you. are we going to hear from elliot rodg rodger's parents.learn at the time of the shooting his mother and father were frantically looking for him in santa barbara having gotten hold of his 140-page manifesto. pamela brown in santa barbara right now. what do we know about the family? what are they telling you? >> well, we know that the family does not want to speak to the media right now. according to this family friend i spoke with, simon astaire, the family is going through indescribable grief, coming to grips with the loss of their son and knowing what he did. but this family friend did tell me about those moments, those frantic moments right before and during the shooting rampage on friday because the parents had received that chilling 140-page manifesto right before the shooting. the mother saw it, knew something was terribly wrong, and looked on his youtube page and found that retribution video where he talked about slaughtering women at a local sorority house. and they hopped in the car, called 911. this is all transpiring while the sh

kyung lah is outside the university of california santa barbara stadium, where a huge memorial serviceout to get under way. kyung is joining us live. this is very dramatic, powerful video. what a horrible tragedy has occurred, kyung. what's the latest? >> reporter: what it tells us and what it really depicts, wolf, is the sheer terror. what was happening inside these businesses. remember, this happened on a friday night, 9:30 friday night. the streets are packed, the businesses are full. take a look. what you're seeing is a pizza restaurant. this is right along the street where the gunman was firing. no one inside this restaurant was hit by any bullets. there was nothing shattered, but you can see them crouching, see the students running. we also spoke to a number of people who were outside the pizza restaurant who were in the apartments who live right above this pizza restaurant, and they happen to be rolling on their iphones. i want you to listen as the bullets went right by them. [ gunshots ] so this gives you a sense of just how frightening it was for many of these people who were

kyung lah is "outfront." she has the exclusive. kyung, so you have had a chance to talk to him. what does he remember about that sale? >> this is one of the three guns sold. and this one store did sell one of the handguns. the manager of the store telling cnn that he remembers this transaction. it happened back in february. he remembers the man who would become the isla vista gunman. he says that there was nothing unusual about him, nothing particularly remarkable. they did talk about isla vista. he says that he cleared the ten-day waiting period. and when asked whether or not the gun store felt responsible in any way, because this weapon was used in a crime, here is what he told us. >> it happens from time to time. but what about the guy that sold him the knives or the swords that he used, or what about the guy that sold him the car he was then driving around, hit people. i mean, do they feel bad? or do they know he was going to do something bad with it? i mean, we sell tools or items. i mean, it's no different than the guy that sold him the knife that he used. >> the manager s

cnn's kyung lah. you first, i don't know if you had a chance to even look at this, but we're just learning that our affiliates, they -- our affiliates are reporting that there were bodies found in the shooter's home, as well. cnn trying to confirm it. what are you hearing? >> i was actually outside that apartment complex just a few minutes ago. it's actually just about three or four blocks from where i'm standing. and at this apartment complex, it is very much a crime scene. this is where we believe the shooter did live. we have not gotten that confirmation from the police. but what we can tell you is that other residents who live there say that the shooter lived there and that people who were nearby counted at least three bodies being removed from this apartment. so that's what we know so far about where this shooter we suspect the shooter may have been living. that would be in this exact area where he chose to do his rampage. and it is through this college town, through this sleepy area where there
