here in the l.a. basin, not only has this week-long series of storms dumped almost half the annual rainfall in just one week but when today's storm passes, it's likely to make this the wettest december on record. the storm swept in off the pacific, blasting east, all this thanks in part to the pineapple express. >> the pineapple express is basically a very strong jet stream that comes all the way from around hawaii in the pacific ocean and just dumps heavy rain, just a conveyor belt of heavy rain, which has been pushing into southern california. >> reporter: it's already dumping on neighboring states. residents of mesquite, nevada built protective barriers overnight. in northwest arizona, a normally dry riverbed became a raging wall of water, sweeping at least four houses away. back in laguna beach, they're starting the cleanup, and today this welcome sight: the first glimpse of sun in days-- but no one is resting easy. hillsides like this one behind me, weakened and saturated by torrential rains, hav

santa ana mountains and l.a. county mountains, over 20 inches worth accumulative rainfall. you can see the difference in between some of these places. like san diego and the city, 7 6.7. but in the mountains, 18.2 inches. huge numbers. thankfully again this morning dealing with quieter conditions. the same impulse will track part of that across the country the next couple of days but it's moving. likely dump some pretty big snowfall totals, especially in the mountains outside denver once you get in the west of the continental divide there. seattle back towards portland will continue to bring in chances for rain showers. the next couple of days, if you're traveling to the northeast, a little bit of snow up near boston. as far as the west is concerned, big improvement at least at this point, though now we have to deal with the clean-up leading into christmas, there's a look at what's left of it this morning. a few showers moved through phoenix early a chance of it in the morning. mount shasta, california, still mostly cloudy but at least drying out up there, 41 degrees. so, l

l.a. is already received more than four inches of rain, foot hill communities have seen six inches. >> as much as 10 feet of snow in s.in the sierra forecast. there is nine feet fallen in mammoth lakes. there is a winter storm warning in affect. >> we have had a nice break in the weather today but we're not done with the rain just yet. there is now details and how much rain so far. >> just since thursday, you can see one of the winters there, eight inches of rainfall. and over three inches of rainfall and orkland, san francisco over two. livermore just shy of two inches and a little over one inch for san jose. live doppler 7 still picking up moisture continuing to feed across the bay area. this is very light. we'll take you in a little bit closer beginning in the north bay. moderate rain and petaluma starting to thin out a little bit. novato starting to see rain. there is another wave moving into san francisco heading towards daily city. this continues to push inland overnight tonight. doi
